Title: Anyone paddling in Calgary this weekend?
Post by: blueplanetsurf on August 07, 2014, 01:38:22 AM
I'm planning to be in Calgary this weekend.  Is anyone doing the Rippin' the Bow event this Sunday Aug. 10th?

I watched this video of a previous race, looks like a fun river race:

I will also be at Shop Nomads in Sylvan Lake Monday through Wednesday if anyone wants to go paddle, please let me know!

I'm planning to be there. Haven't heard much in the way of details. I called Warren at Red Nik earlier this week and it sounds like it will be a pretty casual type of race.

Won't make it to Calgary, but aug 16 in edmonton, bigger longer (more fun?!) race on north sask river. Competitive and rec division, some great paddlers coming out too ( Jim Terrell of quick blade paddles and Dave kalama from Hawaii).  Check out theeasyrider.com

Sounds great.  I'm looking forward to it.  I talked to Warren at Red Nik and he is expecting about 40 padders tomorrow.

I wish I could go to the Easy Rider race in Edmonton as well but I will be back in Hawaii by then.

I was just in Cowtown a few days ago visiting relatives. It would have been cool to meet up with you and do the race on the Bow. The Bow is a totally different river from the Saskatchewan in Edmonton. The Bow is straight from the mountains and is a faster float for sure, but slows down quite a bit late summer. Another feature I would have recommended is the white water play park/Harvie passage by downtown, but it was pretty much destroyed in the floods that hit Calgary a year ago, and is closed for the next two years. The city restructured the old Weir and made three separate passages varying in difficulty with different features that was becoming quite popular with paddlers. I would have liked to get some whitewater gear and get some practice in, but it will be awhile yet before it's up and running.

Have fun on the Bow and let us know how it went.
