Title: Sup friendly spots between Oceanside and Del Mar in SoCal ...
Post by: Long Beach Paddle Guy on January 04, 2014, 05:09:05 PM
I'm in San Clemente, CA for the night and would like to Sup surf somewhere between Oceanside and Del Mar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A good friend of mine SUS's in Solana Beach.  I believe the spot is Table Top Reef.  He said that there are a lot of people out on SUP's when the surf is small and it is definitely small right now.  Although his spot picks up winter swells nicely.

Of course, there is also Dog Patch at San Onofre.  That's the SUP hotspot for San Clemente.  It's really flat right now though.

A lot of people SUS at Cardiff Reef and in front of the camp ground at San Elijo.

Thanks for the responses. I live in Long Beach so will obviously be SUPing down that way again.  Any more help regarding places to sup surf would be appreciated.

The Reef (Cardiff Reef) is generally known as the place to take your stand-up.
The north side of the reef is Suckouts, and that's where a good chunk of surfers sit, because it's a pitching and racy section that can reel south along the break.

South peak is where most of the Sup'ers are, however the sandbar has been good lately, so there will be a mix of Sups, longboards, and short boards vying for the left towards the river mouth.

Table Tops is more advanced and the locals will give you the stink-eye if you don't know what you're doing.
But I've never seen any altercations, personally.

Del Mar beach break is wide open, and 15th street reef can be crowded.
Further south, Torrey Pines is our alternate break.  It will be a couple feet bigger on smaller days because it's all beach break. It walls up, but there are occasional corners.  But you'll literally miles of empty surf all the way down to Blacks Beach.

Yes, and then there's Blacks.

Define "friendly."

I guess I would define SUP friendly as somewhere  SUP surfers and lay down surfers co-exist.  I surf at Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach regularly and although I still encounter attitude once in awhile I'm able to feel comfortable surfing there.  It goes without saying that I practice good etiquette and try to go the extra mile to get along and not give anyone a reason to complain. I haven't sup surfed too many places but I've heard some breaks the attitude is so bad it's not worth going out and dealing with it.

Your definition makes sense.  Truth is though, if one prone rider, or more rarely, another SUP, decides to give you a hard time, it's unlikely that anyone would stand up in your defense (no pun intended).  You can get severely vibed at pretty much any spot in the San Diego area.

To SUP comfortably or by yourself in N. San Diego  I'd recommend walking and/or paddling 1. all the random beach breaks in Carlsbad, esp around the camgrounds.  2. Between Ponto and Grandview, then south of Grandview towards Beacons, 3. South of Moonlight (Encinitas) to Boneyards (which is North Swamis), 4. Cardiff Reef, 4. Table Tops if it's mostly SUPs out, 5. Del Mar, particularly between 16th and 29th street and south of 15th street.
