Whatever that move is, it's pretty amazing. I would be going headfirst through the sail.

here's some great sailing from last week's AWT in SanCarlos, featuring Zoner 14west
see if you can spot him :D :D

Anyone who is thinking about the new blocked off nose SUP's should look at the

Check out the cut back at about 2:08 min... in slow motion you can see just how the pulled in nose outline and rocker work together in a way that would hang up in a big way with the blocked off nose design.
I don't want to squash anyone's out of the box thinking or creativity, the 5'-1" X 17.5" surfboard undoubtedly works well in some decent power/size surf, but if you scale that up to an SUP you no longer have just an inch or so of board between the rail and your heel/toe, plus you have another 2'-6" to 3'-0"+ of board in front as well. Having to "workaround the volume to paddle" issue might make this particular road less than optimum for SUP.
The fact that some of the most successful board designer/builders come from a windsurf background is not an accident. Many of these same ideas were tried/tested/and proved wanting 20 + years ago.

All clean old school wave moves. Still great to watch all these years later.

Definitely...KP has spent time around our stomping grounds a few years ago,...same as in your vid clip shot by Brian Caserio... he flew in with only a sail and a harness...so, I hooked him up with a board, fin, and the rest of his rig...we had some decent surf and, he went off!

Haven't seen any vid yet...but, should be interesting to watch Camille Juban, who is now in the Guinness World Records for the longest duration windsurfing a wave, down at Chicama, Peru...with a total time of 7 minutes and 3 seconds...talk about leg burn!

There's been quite a few Jaws vids posted up from that January 2015 swell event a couple of weeks ago...with a mix of waveriding craft...but, this 3 minute edit is of only wavesailing...the performance level on the wave face, at the speeds they are going, is mind blowing...
Featuring Levi Siver, Kai Lenny, Marcilio Browne, Kevin Pritchard, Morgan Noireaux, Jason Polakow, Robby Swift and Robby Naish...
Really gets me fired up for our local Spring blows that are right around the corner...hope they coincide with waves...

That clip of Kai chunking his rail is rad! Had that happen at sizable Tidy's once but could not get out of the straps. Long swim.

We just had a good blast on the Central Coast...sailed with Zoners Greg and Brad...

That's pretty amazing in such light winds..

You can see the fear in his eyes a few times in the video. Catching a big wave in less than 10mph wind is a great feeling. Going out thru them in marginal wind is scary.

Over the years I've seen lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of videos of windsurfing from Hookipa, who hasn't?
But this one is different, very cool, so it needs to be shared.

They definitely dealt with some challenging conditions...light air getting out...lots of current stealing apparent wind speed...cross chop on the wave face...etc...
There is a fair bit of luck involved in conditions like that...but, if you are good enough, you can create your luck...;-)
There's some great big wave wave sailing footage here:
https://youtu.be/zKv_sUx9EDM
One of the biggest days that I ever wave sailed at Jalama was all about luck...getting out and getting back in...;-)
Most people there that day parked up on the cliff and watched...stoked that I put the "hem hawers" and doubters out of my mind and rigged up...
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover...

Awesome pics, and made me dig out my pics of the Tiree Wave Classic (in Scotland) from 1986 (won by Duncan Coombs)..Cool piece of history here online about it http://tireewaveclassic.co.uk/event-history/ and some pics... Jeez.. that's almost 30 years ago.. That was the first time I sailed in mast high waves.. I can still remember that feeling standing on the beach thinking, this is NUTS going out in this, but like the quote states...

I haven't been on the Zone much the past several years, so apologies for digging up old posts.. but I came across this and that's me at 2:08... Man, that makes me want to go back to San Carlos next summer!
That was a really good board on the wave, very short though and a bit of a pain going back upwind unless powered up.

Davenport, CA is located 45 miles south of San Francisco. Arguably the best down the line wave sailing in the mainland United States. I will only share this information because this is a SUP site.
The launch offers a channel that remains OPEN up to 20+ feet. I have sailed it in 17 ft at 17 seconds and you could still get through the channel.
1 - This is the typical wave sailing starting point. This wave works well in anything from 6 to 12 feet and you can sail several hundred yards down wave. Plenty of off the lip opportunities. Much bigger than 12 - 15 feet and this becomes risky because you can breakdown and get trapped in the many coves to the south. There was a guy who spent 2 nights stuck in a cove drinking cliff water and barely survived. My friend Rob Born notice the car parked on a Saturday and again same place Sunday (e.g. he never returned). The guy was rescued Monday morning by the Coast Guard.
2 - Good news is that when the waves get to be 12++ feet the upper reef starts to work. This is a delightful, low penalty spot to practice wave sailing in mast high and bigger conditions. You can set up 3/4 mile out to sea, identify your wave and then point all the way to #2 where you make a screaming bottom turn on 15++ foot waves. Clean and AWESOME!
I haven't been there in many years because SUP is so accessible and wave sailing is like street fighting.

You tried kiting yet, OffShoot?
The vista's are out of this world.
You need to be good to do what that joker is doing. Kiters landing in the wrong places are the bane of Windsurfers these days.
[edit to add]
Hang around kiters for any length of time and the "whoops, I didn't mean to land there" stories begin with usually the most animated ones being in front of a windsurfer.
Does Dubai have winds like that????
-
You tried kiting yet, OffShoot?
Yes, tried kiting in Bali, but in the 3 days I had lessons, the wind was not strong enough, but it's something I'd like to try again in the right place / conditions.
I've had to do something like this in my windsurfing days though...

Great video. Wish I was a lot younger with a better lower back so I could try wind surfing.
Really enjoyed this drone footage too. The spray from the waves making those beautiful rainbows.
Thanks for sharing the video.

I was thinking about posting this on the "Hot chicks on SUPBs" thread because it has a solid 5 seconds of that in here, but no, it's really about windsurfing chicks, very talented windsurfing chicks, great music also.
Now if it will just post considering the site updates.

Port tack. This is what Aussies love. Spent some time there a while back and finally was OK. Kind of a mirror image of what we're use to. Had some great day's there.
-
That's not Jaws; its Lanes which is just on the west side of the point at Ho'okipa. During normal tradewind conditions, it is starboard tack just like Ho'okipa. But on some rare Kona (south) wind days, it can be epic; if you can get out and back in through the wind shadow and rocks on the inside. :o Very few people attempt it, and it helps to be like Jason and have your equipment sponsored when it is destroyed on the rocks.
-
Great vid.. I've known Jason since he was a kid and we are good friends... I even still have one of his old boards.. That vid brings back some good memories of doing crossovers with friends on really good days.. The west coast aussies like going left but Jason (like me) is from the east coast and we much prefer going right.. and yes I'm pretty sure that's Lanes and the rocks Jason got washed onto would have been at Hookipa..I know Robby (Naish) loves those Kona winds at Hookipa.. The last time I saw Robby there it was conditions like that.. Awesome.

I had another vid of them queued up that I meant to paste the URL to...both locations...the degree of prep and commitment is extraordinary...

Had so much fun windsurfing here in town a couple of days ago, on the last day of Summer, that I put this vid clip together to just show the fun and excitement of pure windsurfing...even in onshore conditions...no real waves to speak of...no big hero moves...sick huge jumps or double loops...nothing extreme...just simply zooming along in the straps with beautiful scenery at a nice beach...planing and carving jibes...just the kind of wind stoke that got me hooked in back in the 80's...kinda refreshing for change to not take an average day for granted...;-)

A really nice blend of things in this one. Full screen with some volume is best.
The IWT Aloha Classic at Ho'okipa is coming up at the end of this month, the pros are hitting Maui in force now, it should be awesome, hoping for a great swell like last year.

Thanks for sharing this great video. Like you said, it dramatically showcases the different branches of the sport, from slalom blasting, to waves, to freestyle. This would be a good video to send to those people who say, "Oh yeah windsurfing; does anyone still do that anymore". This video should answer their question, and also why we still love it.
