"Right now pretty fond of Imagine Dragons:"

As is the media and the commercial world, it's a great song, I can see why I keep hearing that in the background during many commercials, and movie or TV trailers.
I just hope they're getting some royalities for everytime that song is used, they should be raking it in.

Here's another example of another great song, that the commercial world can't seem to let go of.
I hear it in the background everywhere also.

I've never understood why these guys didn't hit it big....great musicians, great sound, lyrics, girls think their cute (at least my wife and daughters do)...the whole package.

Great summertime music...1st two CD's in my truck are their's...almost always listen to them on the way to the beach...sets the mood for sure.

The Nate Mott Band... Willow Medley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYK9_wxZ2SY#)

They were our band for the 2010 and 2011 CCBC after parties. Buds of Vec (one of his boards in the 1st vid) I used their song "Laugh out loud" for our 2010 CCBC vid.

The entire first albums of ALT J, AWOLNATION and IMAGINE DRAGONS are amazing. Cant stop listening.  Other current bands im listening too are A.L.O, PORTUGAL THE MAN, OF MONSTERS AND MEN, GROUPLOVE, PASSION PIT, PONTIAK.  Oh, and a recent resurgence of old skool METALLICA. 80's & 90's only!

What I find most amazing about Sail, is how long it took to take off.  It would likely still be in obscurity if Jeb Corliss hadn't used it in his Grinding the Crack vid.

It could take years to go through what's available on CBC.ca

Zunior.com is a great place to buy new music.  Not a lot of mainstream there.

One of my favourites introduced by CBC is Danny Michel who has a great Central American thing going

Manu Chao-Bongo Bong(great song) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJMLJVha5sw#)

Nope, it can't be done, this "embedding limit" thing is kinda bogus, this is the only site that I've ever experienced it on.  I'd be nice if it wasn't an issue here,,,,,,,,,,,,, just saying.  :-\

But I noticed that they do show up on the bottom part of the message composition or modify page.

Is it page 2 yet?
I'm trying to figure this 'limitation' thing out, it may not be a 24hr.(timing) thing, but a page thing, only so many vids/page, which sucks.

Maybe now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I'm going by my side slider gauge.

Sweet!!!  Lets try it again!
Manu Chao-Bongo Bong(great song) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJMLJVha5sw#)

Okay, it's a so many vids per page thing.
I'd be nice if that limit thing could be altered to prevent this, like other forums that I visit, that don't have this limit thing.

Hint, hint, admin.  ;)

I was at a demo day for a local retail chain, talking to the Tahoe rep when one of the sales women came over and said you took my bliss and I need it back,  I had to start singing "you took my bliss and I want it back' to which he countered with "going to go to Slydel  and look for my bliss".  Then got a funny look on his face and said "I think that is joy".  He got cool points

?Right this very minute?  Sunset Grill. Cued up is "You can leave your hat on" (joe cocker version), Tusk, etc.  A genius mix starting with "All She Wants To do Is Dance"

I get good mixes with 144 gigabytes of music. Most of which I burned from my own CDs, and even some vinyl. Next up for conversion is a stash of reel-to-reel that I stumbled across cleaning out the garage--including an old sony deck.

The Man to Man tape is an old VHS recording of the 1985 Isle of Man race. Got to get that converted too.

I found this map online today that shows the most popular music artist for each state.  About 2/3 of them I've never heard of, as well as some surprises.
Jack Johnson in Wis.?
Nirvana in R.I.?
Don't even know who, or what group Bonobo is for my state.  I'd would have guessed the Dead and Phish would have been here as opposed to Vt. & N.H.

Figures that Cali would be Bonobo. I've never heard of the group either. But I have heard of the apes--which are probably most famous for sexual promiscuity.

Sexually promiscuous monkeys.  Pretty much the first thing that comes to mind when I think of California.

Naw, just old. You remember Bonobo. Not really my cup of tea but it looks like it did when we wuz but wee lads knee high to a grasshopper. Actually never heard of him/them and looked a couple of the others up too.
Heck, 2/3's?  I bet I at 3/4 or more I never heard of.

Which led me to this which I had never seen nor heard that I remember. I kinda like the tune hear too, "its got a beat and you can dance to it",  but the video pretty slick too.

Fall Out Boy is the #1 most popular band in Kentucky?  That’s a bit of a shocker.   And yeah Jack Johnson in Wisconsin?  Perhaps he represents and escape the same way Buffet does to Parrot Heads.  Bonobo in California I can see.   Definitely very popular in my neighborhood of San Diego.  If you like Morcheeba you will like Bonobo.

Hated most of it, but we were a group like a bad marriage. 3 chords is fine to cover the bulk of rock, new wave, punk, reggae, and on occasion ...... country:( Drink some beers, set-up at Taka-O's Sushi Bar in San Clemente, and bash out 3 chord energy songs. What ever was current on the radio, we were trying to play it as close to the original as we were capable. When I was in college, I played in a jazz quartet. It was straight ahead jazz with some talented players. I play drums and percussion. We did some Latin jazz which is what most of my record and CD collect is. That was by far the most fun I ever had playing. I was never at the caliber of the jazz musicians I played with, but it nice to jam with people on another level. I miss those jazz gigs more than any of the hundreds of rock gigs I did over the years. I still like Oingo Boingo, Devo, and Rage, but some great straight ahead or Latin jazz is what I like to shape boards to.

This young chick is amazing..... if you're into jazz.

That was a good performance. I hadn't heard of them before. Good friends of mine had a rockabilly band in the early 80's called the 'Rockin Rebels'. They opened for the Stray Cats and Blasters a bunch of times. The bass player and I played in the college jazz band together. He's a professor of mathematics now. The drummer is a Fedex driver and rhythm guitar is a booking agent for blues and country music festivals.

One my favorite song writer / performers from back in the day, is Tom Wait. He wrote hit songs for a Rod Stewart, Bob Seger, and Bonnie Raitt to mention a few. Still with a straight ahead jazz feel.

MA is Neil Young country?
-- burned out old liberal hippies, still raging against the Man   :D

And I don't know anybody who likes whiney Neil here in the commonwealth.

Neil Young? Now I know why I moved. At least Oregon is some people I never heard or. I KNOW Neil Young sucks.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!!?? PEOPLE HATIN ON NEIL?? I MEAN, MR. YOUNG. UNREAL.

I'm all for individual choice and personal flavors of music but ya'll are going overboard on this one.  Massachusetts LOVES Neil Young.

I can't fathom how he would not be respected or even disliked. He is considered by most a rock/guitar god and the main spark of an entire music genre (grunge). Neil is also an unbelievable live performer even today and is a huge supporter of farming and people with disabilities. And lets not even talk about his work with CSN&Y.

To me he epitomizes what rock n roll is (and what it ain't) - dirty, true, loud story telling. The guy is a legend. Rock don't need more cowbell it needs more reverb! Neil delivers.

You may have to turn in your masshole card if you don't dig on these  8)

FreeTo,
One of my long time neighbors, and legendary glasser Danny Brawner played drums in a 60's surf band called the 'Sandell's. A little throw back surf music. He still glasses in his son Damian Brawner's glassing shop. They still glass Velzy boards too. I hang out sometimes and watch Danny do color resin tell I can't take the fumes anymore. Thank god for epoxy! I can't imagine doing resin as long as Danny has.

Nice TallDude! Surf def deserves more respect as there is great musicianship in the genre. I do prefer mine with vocals but the riffs alone of many surf guitarists, including this one, are quite hypnotizing and satisfying.  Thanks for the post.

Of late its been all WILCO all the time. Finally saw them live this past weekend. Guitarist Nels Cline deserves major rock cred for his manipulation of the 6 string.  This is the album that started me on the WILCO wagon from back in the day. I have this big playlist on my phone called BigNoisy that I shuffle and paddle with. With all the time on the water I've been spending lately, it's getting too familiar so I need to build a new one. The current list is heavy on Coldplay, with some George Thoroughgood, a little Fleetwood Mac, and random stuff. Not quite peppy enough for paddling.

So here's the question--what's your best choice for paddle music. I need something that will help me break 1:10

Paddle music, oh man, there is so much out there, my tastes are very eclectic, all over the place, new, old, doesn't matter, but to me it's all about rhythm which can be any type of music.  Some of my favs, some of which I've already posted, like the two Marvin Gaye songs I recently posted, excellent paddling rhythm.  A small sample ~

Willie Nelson ~ Graceland (Paul Simon cover)
Still is still moving to me (w/ Toots Hibbert)
Blink 182 ~ Miss you
Vance Joy ~ Riptide
George Ezra ~ Budapest
Lorde ~ Glory and Gore
Kongos ~ I want to know
               I'm only joking
               Come with me now
Empire of the Sun ~ Walking on a Dream
Mark Knopfler ~ Speedway at Nazareth
                        Coyote
                        el Macho
                        Marbletown
                        Hill farmer's blues
Adrian Belew ~ Phone call from the Moon
Milky Chance ~ Down by the River (not a Neil Young cover)
Gotye ~ Somebody that I used to know
Jane's Addiction ~ Summertime Rolls
                           Jane Says
                           Pets
Slightly Stoopid ~ This Joint
                           Everything you need
                           Officer
The Clash ~ Charlie don't surf
                   Straight to Hell
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros ~ Coma Girl
                                                     Johnny Appleseed
                                                     Get down Moses
                                                     Gold and Silver
                                                     Long Shadow
Kid Rock ~ Black Chick White Guy
You never met a MF quite like Me
                 Cowboy
Blackstreet ~ No diggity
Soul to Soul ~ Back to life
Lucinda Williams ~ Joy
                            Can't let go
John Mellencamp ~ Jailhouse Rock (Elvis cover)
The White Stripes ~ Seven Nation Army
Los Lobos ~ Kiko and the Lavender Moon
                  Angle Dance
                  Emile
Tom Petty ~ Breakdown
                   Spike
                   Don't do me like that
                   Listen to her heart
                   Luna
Queen ~ Body Language
              Fat bottom girls
The Temptations ~ Cloud Nine
                            Papa was a rolling stone
                            Ball of confusion
RHCP ~ Under the Bridge
            Scar Tissue
            Road Trippin'

Well that ought to get you from Rufus to the Event site.

Metallica. Any albums dated pre 2000. Plenty of juice. Able to understand the words. Strong musicianship. Some heady lyrics to dive into to keep you away from the monotony of paddling.

Rythm you say? Try some African desert rock: Bombino, Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Terakaft, Alu Farka Toure etc.

Other notables: Trevor Hall, Thundercat, Nahke & Medicine for the People

Last night the Jimmy Fallon show was on fire, one of the best I've ever seen.  He had Phil Collins on there to tout his book "Not Dead Yet" and to play a song "In the Air Tonight".  He was backed up in part by The Roots, Quest Love's band, with Quest on the drums, Quest had admitted he was nervous and practiced a lot, to which Fallon was teasing him about thru the show.  Playing that song, on the drums, is no easy feat, especially if you are backing up Phil Collins of all people, the originator of that complicated drum riff.
Anyway he pulled it off, and you can see a big smile come across Quest's face when he nailed it, it was so good, it was chilling.

Yes they're a guilty pleasure, like scarfing down a box of donuts on a Saturday morning. Considering they're as much performance artists as anything, I find the whole mess fascinating. Often start off winter weekend mornings watching a few videos before getting up.
For the filming of Chapie apparently Ninja was a pita, and none of the "real" actors would get near him, especially after he fed someone an edible without telling them what it really was.
Saw them in concert and they do a really good show, will repeat when they come back to town.

Found this--a Norman's Rare Guitar video. He has a ton of great little videos, must be one amazing shop. Richie Sambora and Orianthi play about a zillion bucks worth of rare guitars. Looking at the price tags on them, most of them are 20K and up.

Thought I'd post this one, with the attention to classic, and expensive guitars.  Check out Joe Walsh's guitar, it's a custom Duesenberg (I'm pretty sure) covered in 'mother of pearl', it's an absolute beauty, and of course he knows how to play the crap out of it.  Also I love this song along with Daryl's backup at his house from his web series.  I'm still kicking myself for not being able to see Joe during his six show residency, in Las Vegas at the House of Blues earlier this year.

Enjoying The Tedeschi Trucks Band lately. Derek Trucks is the  nephew of recently passed Butch trucks from The Allman Brothers, and played with them for a while. His wife is the lead singer Susan Tedeschi .  He's a great slide player, and here is their cover of "Everybody's talking" by Harry Nilsson. It's nothing like the original and really showcases their talent

Two thumbs up! One of the best bands/live bands out there. Susan with her raspy rocker/blues range. Derek with his endless talent (which I wish was showcased a bit more in extensive jams). Mike with his soul chops. Oteil (also of Allman Bros and Dead & Co) slapping on bass. And the backing band members with their gospel harmonies. Add some very solid dual drumming and horns and that's what I call a BAND!!

I try not to miss a show within reasonable distance. FYI - they are about to release a new live album or just did. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tedeschi-trucks-band-live-fox-oakland-film-album/

So many of their songs are timeless, and this one maybe being to most timeless of them all, all because of the subject matter being so multi-generational.  To the Kardashians, the Baldwin sisters, Hilton sisters, Richie sisters, the Taylor Swift squad, you name it, this song is for you, as well as the all rich ones who come behind you.

In the 80's, when I was in high school, my buddy's Dad used to play Petty and the Wilburys in his shop all the time while we hung out shooting hoops (or just sitting around shooting the shit).  Little did I know how much that stuff got through to me.  In the 90s, Petty sat comfortably in the mix with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement and the rest.  I just saw him a little over a month ago, and he blew the roof off.  The crowd was a mix of millennials, soccer Moms, white collar Dads in slacks, bikers in leather, hipsters with beards, and more.  He transcended the musical boundaries.   Amazing performer.  Amazing songwriter.  Absolute pro at his craft.  One of the true greats.

So I'm sure you've heard the news about Neil Diamond's diagnosis with Parkinson's, sucks, one of my parents favorites, they saw him several times, had the records, so I heard him a lot, even though not really a fan.  But there was one exception, I was 16 when "Solitary Man" came out, just entering the period of games of love with girls, very frustrating, but I had surfing for momentary relief, and I also liked this song (the only one of his) which was becoming more of a relief/respite as the games continued.

You got me thinking of my dad and his music tastes, resulting in me and my brother  being exposed, back in the day, to Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, The Doors, Pete Seeger, Leon Russell, Buffy St. Marie, Neil Diamond, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Leonard Cohen... all pumped out of a big quadraphonic Sansui and old school JBLs. There was a TEAC reel-to-reel too of course  ;D

Blast from the past listening to J. Geils. When I was a teen we sometimes used to sit outside the sign company warehouse in Allston that J. Geils occasionally practiced in....heard a lot of their "new" music long before it was released.

Zeppelin is one of my all time favorites and the 1st band we had for the CCBC this weekend did some great covers. The set started with the Song Remains the Same and I had my back to the stage. Until I turned around and saw them playing I thought it was the original.

To the music buffs reading this thread. If you folks are around New England next summer you should look at going to the Levitate Music and Arts Festival.

From the waaaaaaaay back machine.
Heard it on the radio yesterday and was really impressed with this song that came out in 1964, but for different reasons.  Once you get past the corny sounding intro, the music and singing sounds almost country/blues like, it was as if I was listening to it with very different ears than what I had back when I was only 14.  This is the first song they ever recorded as a singing duo, but released later.  I now find it somewhat timeless,,,,,,,, except for the intro.

...and had a blast dancing/partying with them. This was a tribute song obviously because of AF's recent passing so they weren't as tight as on all of their other stuff...but some of their other own material they played was definitely bluesy rocking the house, with many up and grooving to the tunes. Fun times for sure...will definitely go check them out again somewhere.  8)

Two weeks ago the wife, and I were all excited to head to the LACo Fair to see some old time 70's favorites by the names of The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, and .38 Special all at the same show.

Well fortunately The Outlaws (my favorite of the three) opened it with a too short of a set of several of their greats ("There Goes Another Love Song", "Hurry Sundown", "Freeborn Man", and "Green Grass and High Tides") and absolutely killed it!! Even the young kids there in their mid 40's were loving it, and singing along to most all of them. ;D

Then Marshall Tucker Band took the stage and opened with "Dog Eat Dog World" with Chris Hicks on lead vocals who did a fine job on the song, so I thrilled that it appeared we were in for another great set from another one of my high school days favorites...boy, was I ever wrong. :o

It's been a while since I'd actually followed the comings and goings of the MTB, and I'm still not really sure what's happened to founding member and lead singer Doug Gray (drugs, ETOH, dementia, a little of all three?) but when he stepped up to the mic on the second song of the set...it took me a couple bars to figure out wtf he was singing (and the band was trying to follow), and it wasn't until they got to the chorus, and the rest of the guys harmonized with him could we recognize that he was attempting to sing "Fire On The Mountain". Oh goodness... :(

The stunned silence in the crowded was palpable, with everyone looking at one another in shocked disbelief of what they were hearing, but all just figured he needed to get warmed up a bit, and all would be just fine. Hmmm, too bad that wasn't to be the case. After a polite applause when they finish FOTM, they then went into their all-time most notable "Heard It In A Love Song"...and that's when the wheels fell completely off the bus. Doug not only couldn't sing in the melody of the song, he couldn't remember the lyrics, and just ad libbed at times with the other members glancing over in dismay (and disdain)...and that was it for the wife and I...at the end of the song we got up, and left the concert (.38 Special was my least favorite of the 3 so it wasn't a big deal that we missed them also).

Anyway, to finally land this airplane, and why I tell the story...tonight I stumbled onto the cover band Umphrey's McGee, who does a much better version of "Can't You See" than MTB themselves do (which we cringed at as we heard Doug Gray mangle it also as we left the venue).  :'(  Here's Umphrey's McGee's take on it....

Also being a Pink Floyd fan (saw Roger Waters do "The Wall" live in 2010) here's their pretty darn good cover of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Hope you enjoy...

I do love me some Metal. Though I always considered it the anthem of the "never going to get laid" guys. Probably why it's more or less dying out after one generation. Like the shakers. No reproduction.

I totally disagree that metal is dying out. I listen to a lot of metal. There has been a constant flow of metal since Black Sabbath started the genre.  Ian Christe wrote a pretty good book documenting heavy metal history from that point called Sound of the Beast. It’s a little dated by now since it was written in the early 2000’s. But to say that it died out after a generation is false. The amount of the genres and sub-genres alone is proof that metal has been alive all this time.

Been going thru my vinyl (+- 500) for the last several months and having a BLAST doing it, after not cranking up my turntable for about 30 years.  Lately it's been Jethro Tull, and after going thru all their albums, I've decided that this is my favorite Tull song, everything about it is perfect, arrangement, tempo changes, added strings, and it's off only their second studio album '69.

Im going to have to check more of this out. I haven’t listened to EDM/trance/house music in a while but I always liked how each D.J. would bring together different songs and make them flow into their own style.

When I was a kid, Friday nights consisted of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and then Midnight Special (or the other way around).  NYD.  What more can I say?  Notice how there's another bass player behind Arthur Kane.  Arthur was so looped up that night ( like most other nights lol) that the rest of the band decided he should not be plugged in.

Blake Richardson from Between the Buried and Me is one of my favorite drummers. This is a 3 track EP they released a few years ago. The vocals have been removed so you can really hear the drumming and the rest of the band. The way they switch styles and tempo and blend everything together is crazy. There isn’t one piece on his drum kit that isn’t utilized to its fullest. Well except for maybe the cowbell. But this is progressive metal at its finest and drumming from another planet.

I like to watch the Grammys and the AMAs to possibly discover new music and talent, it doesn't always happen, but it did this year.  I've been seeing pics to this guy for about a year, "thinking, there's an odd duck, a black, gay, cowboy", knowing nothing about his music, but I do now, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Lil Nas X is very good, very, very good IMO.
Here's a vid of his hit song "Old Town Road" that he did at the Grammys, but it's not from the Grammys it's from the CMAs, which I didn't see, but I like this one the best, there are many versions of his song on YouTube.

Damn, there's some lyrics that have stood up to time.

The fascists and their many guises
Anarchists and their fantasizing
It seems sometimes they're sailing the same boat
Politicians mesmerizing throngs of automated souls
As some similar psycho's screwing on the scope
I'm leaving town
To join sophisticates in my head
We'll have our fun playing the hypocrite critic
And when all the creatures in their palaces are crushed
I can safely say "I'm coming home"
