Title: Canada Sessions
Post by: 14 West on September 23, 2012, 03:23:03 PM
Cox Bay yesterday. More beautiful south swell, warm air and water... and almost October! Little bit closey at times, but if you found a shoulder it was amazing.

Nice picture. I have always wanted to visit vancouver island.  When is a good time to visit. Not just for surf but for a family trip.

Late July into August is typically warm and dry, and we get a decent peppering of South Swells coming from yonder. However, it can get stupid with the crowded breaks, though probably nothing a Californian would be stressed about. Prices get jacked in July/August, double or more, and everything is booked solid, so I'd plan in advance. The rest of the year it is beautiful too, but the swell gets messy as multi-directional swell starts showing up, and it is obviously colder with lots of rain. That said, my best and cleanest session in Cox bay ever was last November on overhead waves.

The water is abnormally warm still up here! It's strange!

... and the good weather keeps on rolling for Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. We probably have not had any significant precipitation since July. Normally this time of year it is overcast, raining and around 12C, instead today there was no wind, 20C in the sun, and people were riding around in bikinis. Over the three days the waves started off big and meaty overhead, tapering down a bunch today with some super fun chest high lefts you could pump through crazy fun style.

Small conditions at North Chestermans Friday at Sunset before things went flat, and then got stupid big and messy the rest of the weekend. Looks warm, but wasn't!

Little ghetto edit from today... Didn't catch the best ones on film because it started pissing rain, ah well! Insane river current, you can see halfway there was no progress to be had, so I resorted to beach walk shuttles and relaunching! Fun!

Love the eagle on the beach?

Haha yeah! The current was so strong the only way to get back to the peak was to shuttle up the beach, so when I came to shore and saw this guy there, not really caring as I approached I was stoked! Got to within 10 feet of him, at which point I started to get concerned if he was going to attack my eyeballs and I headed the other direction. Never had I seen one so close, definitely cool.

Wow, great video! Fun to watch that! Jealous of the wave even if it looks frigid!

5 days of solid high period swell headed this way starting tomorrow coinciding with holidays wahoo! Getting giddy. Only downside is the rivers are puking out full on ice melt making the surface layer pretty frigid. First dive under a wave isn't bad, second starts to get uncomfortable, but by the time you pop up after that third you are starting to feel a bit disorientated.

Nice long wave for the size! Looks like a beautiful place.
Nice surfing as well... and ... yeah... Eagles would be pretty intimidating when you get that close :o

Thanks guys. I'm eager to try this spot again after a few days of sun so the river mouth isn't puking out current and things are a bit smoother and faster (and less brown).

6-9' @ 21-25 seconds headed this way, we almost never see it that big with this long of a period, usually it maxes out at a 3' @ 20ish second south swell in the late summer. This weekend should be interesting, you guys south of us must be seeing this too?

First Family day long weekend and we got some waves with some very grey, gloomy weather. The 7-7 rips, even in the smaller stuff you can just carve the heck out of this thing.

We pay for it though.. cost of living is a major bummer here.

I just counted and I've already got 15 sessions under my belt this year, at this rate I could hit 120. That is going to be a lot of sausage and egg mcmuffins in the morning and fuel burned.

Spring is here, 17 C today, glassy waves, can't complain. Sunset session was a bit bumpy, but plenty fun.

Just a crappy little clip from last weekend. When the camera was rolling the shoulders were disappearing. The worst!

After a pretty crappy summer around here with very little south swell I put away the 5/4, pulled out the 4/3 and things started to pick up here big time Mid-September. Plenty of OH days and then a 20' swell came down the strait on the weekend into today... fingers crossed for a good one. But damn that water is cold, especially after spending so much time in OR, CA and Mex this summer!

No wind at the first AWT stop at Waddell State Beach so we held a SUP contest. I managed a second place giving Bernd, who competes on the world tour, a run for his money. Happy with the result and a Super fun couple windless days. Great little competition.

Thanks to Hi-Tech Maui/Starboard and Black Project Paddles for great gear to get stuff done.

14.... #2.... that's awesome.... congratulations!  ;D ;D ;D

Bernd is one of my favorite SUP tour surfers.... great to share a podium with him!

Nice slash shot of you as well... it looks like you had some pretty rip-able surf for the contest.

Thanks for the video ;D

I almost could have had him too... looking at the score cards afterwards, 12 in, I was ahead, then he finished the heat nabbing good waves while I got next to nothing. We were doing 12 minute heats but upped it to 20 for the final, so if only we hadn't!!!! Ah well, it was good fun!
