Title: GoPro paddle mount
Post by: mantaray on August 04, 2012, 05:39:10 AM
Question on using GoPro mounted to the paddle....

Does it make the paddle sink?  Using the GoPro handlebar mount kit.  Don't want to use the floaty back since I want to be able to swing the camera back to the paddle shaft to hold up to film.

I don't know about the paddle mount, but the camera will sink on its own without the floatie back. I dove for my nephew's brand new GoPro for a couple of hours after it came off while he was wake boarding.

That I do know.  Just wondering if attached to a paddle (carbon) whether it will make it noticeabley less buoyant or not.

I use a few feet of good PVC electrical tape to fix the gopro in the standard mount to the paddle, and I've used it on several different carbon paddles like this and none sank.

it's also bit lighter than using the handlebar mounting method, and still pretty strong.
*(I don't have the handlebar mount, but can't imagine it weighs too much more)

Use the seat post mount, and my paddle still floats just fine.

For this vid I cut the white plastic GoPro stick on surf mount into a v (piece of pie shape) and duct taped it to my paddle blade where the blade meets the shaft.. and had a small leash from the camera around the shaft in case it popped off.. It seemed to work well and gave me a bit more distance away from me than if it was just on the shaft.

They float fine, but I'd use the float back. No sense losing a camera. Stuff breaks.

Just made this up today from the base plate that the GoPro comes on in the packaging.

DJ, you don't think having on the blade itself is going to effect paddling that much?

Yes it does hamper paddling for sure.. (when the camera's on).. I took it on today's down-winder and didn't end up using it because I needed those one or two stroke take off's which we didn't get.. I planed to just pop it on once the conditions got good.. Paddling with the mount on the blade didn't effect paddling much.. It works fine for suring when you can just take a couple of strokes to catch a wave.

What did you use to adhere the custom fitting to the paddle blade? I'm gonna start rockin' a GP paddle mount and am gonna start w/a handlebar mount and take it from there. I was just in Costa Rica and had a paddle w/handlebar mount but it was WAY too close to handle.

Not the prettiest (w/duct tape) but easy! Is the cam on the forward part of the paddle? I'm guessing no, it's on the rear of the paddle blade. Maybe post a shot of the paddle sideways w/cam mounted? Also guessing ur pic of the packaging plate mount is not attached yet, but just sitting on paddle blade. Thanx for showing this, DavidJohn. I'm a total GoPro newb and everything helps.

Yes.. it was just sitting there.

btw.. You can mount it on either side of the blade.

Parallel evolution from above the equator.  I have always mounted mine in the 'inside' of the paddle.  This way the camera is usually UP when you are riding.   Quick bit of duct tape and you are good to go.

The swing weight from this configuration is enormous.  I recommend wearing a Chesty (GoPro Mount).  Keep the camera on the Chest mount until you are ready to surf.  Usually after you have taken the edge off with a few waves.  Then switch to the paddle mount being careful to wrap the line around the paddle shaft.

Since you asked.  Here the combination of mounts in action.  Starts paddle view DOWN (I am under water).  Then Chest view.  The remainder all paddle views.  Note I am wearing the Chesty mount the entire time.

Nice edit! You ride real well too. Thanx for posting. Looked like some decent size surf. We're almost done w/yet another winter storm hear on the East Coast and it looks like it'll be a prone day tomorrow. Winds are gonna be like 20-25 offshore tomorrow. This vid is from earlier this winter where the winds started out pretty light but increased as the storm moved out making for some challenging SUP. SOLOSHOT view.

That was cool. I am happy I saw it. Quentin Tarantinoish there, seeing the end at the beginning too. Something new every few seconds. I thought 1:10 trying to cut back over was great but your expression at 2:45 maybe beats it with all sort of other goodies included.

Pretty happy w/the bicycle handlebar mount results. Swing weight was indeed a factor and after about 1-1/2 hrs it started to wear on me. I think mounting on blade might even be worse, but I won't know until next sesh when I give that a go. One thing, next time I use this mount, leash/tether will be on blade end, not handle end. One or two shots it showed. I did like how I was able to collapse cam and still paddle prone w/paddle under chest. Guessing that will not be possible w/a blade mount. Could be the deciding factor, especially in size.

First go out w/the GoPro Chesty. Nice frontside view, pretty poor for backside. Def prefer the paddle mount, but it doesn't captue complete rides too well, unless it's a REAL mellow/flat wave.
(btw- I thought the GP intro lame w/that "Be A Hero" so I crafted my own in Premiere :P. Anybody wants, it's in the Dropbox link below.)

I switched from mounting the GoPro on the paddle end to the handle end after a friends recommendation.  Way better!  Swing weight is minimal and it is right there for turning off and on.  I can use it for hours in the surf.  I use the "one button mode" to keep it from foggin up so it helps to have it within easy reach.  I use the roll bar mount.  The camera is mounted about 6 inches from the handle facing down towards the paddle.  It is between the paddle and my body.  I have found I like paddling out to the break with the GoPro rotated around to the front of the paddle, then when I get to the waves I rotate it back to the back of the paddle between the paddle and my body.  Works!

I can post some pics when I get home but really I use the GoPro the same as I did when it was on the paddle end.  I just find it is much easier to have the weight up near the handle vice at the paddle especially when paddlling a smaller board with big waves in bumpy conditions.

When paddeling my waveger I like mounting the gopro near the blade. But for downwinders or longer paddles I mount near the handle, Here a couple of rund from the other day.. sorry for the rather poor quality, but it gives you an idea

Did you put some electrical tape under the mount?

GoPro handle bar mount comes w/a protective liner. If I ever loose it or it gets too worn out to use, I'd put the elect tape on.

Do you use a tether from the camera around the shaft in case it breaks off?
Title: Re: GoPro paddle mount
Post by: surfercook on March 07, 2014, 04:28:46 PM
I used a tether first go out w/the paddle mount. Ditched it my second try though. I was in a hurry and rolled the dice it would hold, which it did (waves were small). I would def recommend the leash/tether for larger days.

I use a handle bar mount over a single wrap of electrical tape on the shaft. I also run a small tether around the camera to the paddle shaft that I make lay flat with a rubber band.
