10'6" x 28" x 4 1/2"
1.5 lb EPS (American Blanks)
Double Gortex vented (Casica Engineering)
Five fin (measurements supplied by Greg Griffin)
Deck: 2 x 6oz
Bottom: 4.8oz carbon fiber w/1 x 6oz

Mahana, stoked to have you with us!

That board looks unreal.  Style us some larger pics.

Best,

Great looking board.

But why did you put the carbon on the bottom????????

Carbon is strongest under compression I thought.

Windsurfers now only put it on the top.

The biggest problem is stopping the board flexing and it flexes upwards due to the water pressure.

Just a thought and we all leave our boards upside down to save the bottom. Black is not good in the sun.

Russell.

Russell- Thanks! The decision to put the carbon on the bottom was made because of the heat factor, I have another board that is gray and the deck gets hot while paddling. When the board is out of the water it goes into a mylar bag. I still get the strength benefits of the carbon on the rails.

Randy- Great to be here! Here's the larger pics:

PlankSpanker- Mahalo! She rode well. I Have not made the fins yet so I put in a set of Spitfire quads. The pulled in tail made turning easy. I can't wait to get it into some waves bigger than waist high.

I have been glassing PE boards for a while but still have not mastered epoxy, I get a bit of blush on my bottom rail laps, but every one gets better than the previous.

I've been doing some back yard board building using EPS & EPOXY. I'll be glassing a 14' board next week. Want to watch.......... ;)

Maybe we can learn from each other........ ::)

Sam
-I wish I could make it but I moved to the mainland several years ago, still find myself back there about three  times a year though. I was just talking to my friend KK today about lining up a couple of SUB's for when I'm on the westside in October. Hopefully you have a project going on around that time.

I was talking to Sam about how I dealt with the rigidity of the carbon when hand laminating. The only trouble area is the tail so I eliminate the problem by trimming the rail lap in this fashion:

the swallow is cut flush with the edge.

Was the blank at 1.5 pounds per square foot?

1.5 lbs per cubic foot, I believe this is how the weight of eps foam is measured.

No worries thanks. I am just doing the converson, in oz we are metric. For us it works out to be about 24 kg per cubic meter. Great craftsmanship. How does it hold up for dents etc?

So far the board has held up well- no dents or dings, which is amazing with only 2- 6oz layers on the deck, and I weigh 220lbs (100 kilos). The next boards I will be making will have 2 layers of 7.5oz on the deck and only one on the bottom. We'll see how that goes.

Cool,
I am not sure what I am going to do my board yet? I understand the PSH are 2 6oz on bottom and 2 on top with a 6 oz patch. I am thinking of trying 1x 6oz and 1x4oz on the bottom and the same on the deck with another 4 oz patch. Guys here in aust have a process too which allows the board to be glassed with epoxy and polyester so a poly gloss coat can be applied. Apparently the combo is a bit stiffer and the finish is better. Rather go a bit lighter and see how it goes rather than too heavy. Especially with the full lenght deck pads.
Regards,
Scott

Yohan-
Mahalo for the compliment! I have been hand laminating all my boards but would like to switch to vac bag in the near future.

Mahana,
Just wanted to say "Hi". I've been talking a lot with Pete (Gortex Vents) and have ordered several plugs.

Any chance your coming to Hawaii next month?

Aloha......Sam

You Know it! We'll be in Kauai 'til the 20th then on to Oahu through the 27th. I will be staying on the north side in Laie but should be in the Waianae area at least a couple of times that week. What's your schedule like during that time?
Glad your getting to know Pete, he's one smart guy. My brother is planning on visiting him after we get back to have him overhaul one of our Skil planers.

Aloha,
Mahana
