Hey gang,
My usual posse is out of town and I am going to be solo on my Sunday dawn patrol.
Looking at the reports and will probably head down to an area just to the north of my NW secret spot.
If you want to meet up for to share some waves, PM me.
Mellow spot, vibe wise... probably have it alone until 7:30 ish...
About a mile stretch of beach and reef...
Getting light at 5:15 these days...
I will give you directions, etc. via text if you want to go.
Or, if you want to photograph the meetup for posterity, that's cool too.
Whatevers.
Bring a good attitude, good manners, and a willingess to get out of the water at 8 or 8:30 or so if it gets crowded.
Maybe bring a distance board too for a paddle up the creek afterwards...
If you are in South County, we can rally from my house... or meet up at the Trestles parking lot...
Tim
-
Sure, I can bring some boards to demo if anyone is interested...

I'm down. Ralph, can you bring the Coreban 7'0" Hyper? A couple of us here are interested in trying it out.
Thanks.

Hey Tim!
Yesterday I was just thinking of you as I had lunch just north of your secret NW swell spot and said to myself, "I should call Tim", although it was not nearly as big as the last swell.
Maybe I'll see you if I am correct about the location of this "Secret" spot!
Kiku :)
-
Gail,
I will text everyone with directions on Saturday night...
Gail, going to the spot we met at last time, as the true "secret spot" is a shade localized and whatever goodwill (or lack of exceedingly violent ill will) that I have built up... I don't want to ruin.
Gotta see if I can get Paddlecrazy and SUP Giant there...
Should be a hoot.
If I get a few more commitments, I will just lug the shortboard quiver down for sampling.
That would include: The original 8'3" Enigma about which I did a semi-pornographic video (that was quickly pulled... think Pamela Anderson in her prime...) about a year ago... the Adam 7'9" by 26, Aventador (8'3" by 27), and Diablo Rojo (8'7" by 27.5)... and of course the Mach 1. The Collab can't make it. He will be on a boat to a new home with loving adoptive parents.
Candi will be on top of the car in case it crowds early and someone is in a mood to paddle up the river.
I might even bring Pocket Fuel and mixed nuts!

Timapalooza 2012 is on did you do a deal with Ticketmaster or Frontgate? Count on me and maybe a Random.
found my @soulsup PW and I have the code
-
Which board to bring? Not sure if both will fit in the Bavarian oil-burner.
Got the 6'6" and an 8'4".
-
Gracias! Vemos maņana, :)
-
Not quite as cool as mitchapalooza. No snoop dog. No beer bongs. And hopefully no streaking. Adjusting paddles and losing up car. My Ke nalus all have orange tape for observation purposes. I will have three, including a long one. They will b on beach next to backpack and boards. Feel free to sample. One at 83.5, one at 85.5 and one a bit longer. Try out whatever board u want too.
-
Any access issue getting down there?-those all look like semi-private condos-anything i have to jump or is there an open staircase?
Ive seen the staircase from the sand but not on that frontage road.
-
Open staircase. I will be parked by it.
-
got it-should be fun!
I will b the one with something checkered! ::)
-
Yes Bringing the Hyper.
Rode it today for 3 Hours.
Now I know why they call it a Kids Board.

Good time. Broken leashes, broken boards. Was it really that big out there? I should try out for swimming in the Olympics.
"So, Mr. Cardiff ummm, Sweeper is it? How did you train for this swim meet?"
"well, you see, I like to paddle out at secret spots and tow my board out by bailing it under relentless pounding surf....at 5am."
I'd do it all over again. :)
-
Fun Sesh Cardiff!-i saw you get a few definitely overhead + waves out there!
The look on the faces of the local prone crew was worth the drive! :D
"What the Hell!-its the Supocalypse!!"
counted 15 at the peak of our invasion.
Everyone catching big bombs-hooting-just a great sesh-fun spot with lots of room to roam. Great Crew-SL-Big Ed-Mana Karma-Sup Position (Ralph) dropped into a left bomb as i scratched to get out of his way, my wife, my son CD, Kneecap,Cardiff, Corran,a few others i cant remember. Warm water -nice NW/SW peaks-SL buckled his stick. I got Halibutted for about 10 seconds when i decided to not kick out and took a bomb on the head-so fun!
Topped it off with a nice bagel sandwich at the end.
Oh and dont tell anyone else-its still a "Secret"
-
The first Timapalooza, or socalZoneapalooza was a blast. As I expected, the fading NW windswell and the rising SW swell gave us one or two overhead sets... And if you stayed on it long enough to tag the close out lip, you (and your board) paid the price, landing the floater and on the paddle back out. At one time, there were fifteen Zoners in the water ranging in age from the young CD Kinley at 19 or so, to the exceedingly old Strand Leper at 47.
Cardiff broke a leash or two, Ralphie brought down a half dozen boards, I emptied out my garage and laid the contents on the sand... And on my fifth or sixth wave managed to buckle the Mach 1. Good thing Aventador was waiting in the wings.
Kiku got pushed nearly down to the river mouth on her paddle out but still managed to snag a beast. Ralphie was waiting outside for a mystery cloud break... I was ready to bust his chops for paddling to Catalina... When a wave stands up in front of him and he crushes it for a hundred yards or so.
Kneecap was going off on his new Imagine 8'3"... So Cal was getting bombs... Mrs. So Cal was stroking into power, paying the consequences on the inside... And laughing about it... And later admitting that she might have cried once or twice after the eighth wave on the head in succession. Paddlecrazy was grinning ear to ear, Big Ed was nails on his new bevel deck Kings. Mauna Karma was showing off his beautiful stroke while riding wave after wave on his 8'3"Imagine Tourmodave was way outside waiting for the left bombs... Patrick was super stoked at 5:15... Victor from HB was jovial, and stoked. Corran was shaking his head, wondering how I possibly could have broken yet another board... And might have snagged a couple of rights.
Fifteen people, and it didn't even feel crowded... That's how many waves there were.
Between playing host, making sure that everyone's drinks were filled and bodies were intact, I got few fun little runners.
The coolest part is that when the proners woke up and paddled out at 8:30, we were gone.
Sponsored by Speaker City!
Any participants want to give their take? If I left you out, give a shout!
Gotta cook dinner for the wife now.
Thanks for playing gang. It was indeed an event!
I told the local proners who I have come to know that it was my birthday party.
Got a bunch of well wishes... No seriously. It's a friendly place if you show respect...
Tim
-
Ralphie got some pics... Btw. He said he would post me up here.

It was just like Dogpatch, only fun!
In all seriousness, it was a great gathering. I was first down there drinking my coffee and all these people start showing up with stand ups, very cool. It's funny, but there wasn't a person I talked to among that crew that I wouldn't be happy to have a beer with anytime. Everybody was just out to have a good time and stoked everybody else was. It really was what this whole wave riding thing is about. I can't remember the last time I hooted so much.
I'm still shaking my head over Ralph's cloudbreak. He was literally 50 yards outside of everybody and a little south and here comes this big rolly thing and he's right there like he knew it was coming. Just ripped it all the way through.
Every time I turned around Tim was dropping in on a bomb. Solid waves and some good runners. I missed the turn he buckled the Mach 1 on, but dude was laying down some solid tracks.
Mrs. SoCal was right in there digging in on the sets, just like her old man (only with less checkers) and getting crushed with the rest of us.
Cardiff was on all kinds of interesting craft and looked at home on all of them. Guy has that whole butter smooth thing working for him and I'm jealous.
Big Ed had a beautiful left toward me with the GoPro running where we could have slapped a high five.
For the most part I was flailing after dropping down a couple sizes in boards. That 8'3" is a lot of work to paddle, but I now understand what Tim means when discussing the boards Corran has made for him. I drew a couple lines on waves where my old 8'6", which is an awesome board, would have chirped or spun out. But this thing not only hung in, it accelerated through and took off. I've had my eyes opened quite a bit.
Where we goin' next weekend?
-
Wow, I bummed I missed this thread/get together!
I don't suppose there are pics/videos?
-
Thanks Tim!
Although I only caught one wave and got thoroughly destroyed trying to get back out I had a GREAT time meeting everyone and watching all of you rip it up out there!
Hope to do it again sometime soon!
Kiku :)
-
Thanks Tim and Crew I had a great time...It always amazes me how NICE sweepers are.
-
Wow, the first time we all get together and the good energy just flowed. And yes, Supapalooza has a different vibe than when I would go surf with a bunch bros back in the day. The hooting and hollering is the best. It's so rare to get encouragement...I was thinking out loud, "uh oh, they're yelling my name, now I have to make it!" :p
Thank you all for the great session. Nice to put faces on the names. :)
-
Wish I could have made it over for the fun, but that's a little further than I like to paddle from n/e Fla ;D... Glad you guys had fun, though. Paddle on, JD
-
Killer morning guys, and lady ;)
Should have known better than taking an inside wave on way outside to meet everyone, but after spending the following 20 minutes getting washed around the inside I was finally able to push through to the outside and connect and meet a handful of characters from the 'zone, confirming they are actual real people... and pretty bad ass ones at that.
SL had his quiver lining the beach, and good thing after putting his knee through the first one. Was cool talking boards with Corran, who shaped my board but I had yet to meet in person. SoCal was dialed, and has a classy family in and out of water. Everyone was charging, hooting, ripping, and sharing...
It might as well as been your bday SL, cause it was one hell of a party... and one we must repeat before too long.
Peace.
-
Thanks for instigating the get together Tim. I second all the comments how it was a very positive vibe!
I carried two of Tim's boards down to the beach. You can read all the dimensions he posts, but it really doesn't sink in how small these boards are until you carry them. His boards are ridiculously light, narrow and thin. Makes my board feel like a pig and it's an 8-10!
To steal the slogan from the PGA, "These guys are good". As my skill set is still building, I was a bit intimidated by some of the sets. It did give me the chance to watch some true craftsman work. I was beside Tim as a rogue wave approached. I thought we were both paddling like hell to get over it, until Tim pivoted in front and took off down the face with a big "WHOOOP"! Sorry for being in your way. That being said, I did ride 3 waves and they were great.
Great time and learned a lot watching some fantastic riders.
-
Dave,
It was all GOOD! You just forced me to fade a little bit more into the pit... made for a better turn anyway...
Yes, Mach 1 is buckled and in for repair... but Corran's explanation of a knee to the board doesn't wash... as I think my knee would be hurting just a bit. When you tell your shaper to make your board as light as possible... without a stringer... it might buckle at a place like almost "secret spot" ... Like I have said before, SUP is my midlife crisis sport... so if I buckle the occasional board, "Make me another please."
Thanks for the kind words Dave... (and thanks for letting that wave go by!) ... there really were some skills on display out there.
I think that with the level of riding, and the level of respect shown to the locals... a positive perception of standup in this little section of the world was displayed on Sunday.

So Ralphie wakes up at 330, loads the car, drives two hours, and delivers six boards down the stairs and onto the beach for (mostly) total strangers... AND snaps a few pics of the fun in between sessions.
THEN because he hangs a little longer with his HB local brother Victor (cool cat that I have surfed with up in HB)... He has no one to help him back up the stairs with all of his boards... Cuz we are all having coffee.
Ralphie, much like Ferris Bueller, is a righteous dude!
Thanks brother.

Took a fin to the arm and hand...not feeling so good).

Yes, it looks WAY bigger than it really was. That spot usually doesn't break... and its pretty thick with sharks... and the other morning, there were 15 freaking standups in the water... and lots of other bad stuff too!

thats right!-and uh how about that gang of meth freak proners we had to fight on the beach!-talk about Battle of the Paddle!, Tim gave his Braveheart speech and Big Ed went mental and led the charge! "But they'll never take, our FREEEEEDDDDOOOOOMMMMM!" :D

You guys had such good conditions and size! Band of brothers from another mother (and sisters).
Thanks for posting the pictures here as the fb was blocking me too.

Maybe the contest circuit should have you schedule the events... seems like you picked a pretty special day!
That's so Zone.... good people, good vibe, good waves... way to go!

8)Hey guys, I finally was allowed thru standupzone security and got a username and password after a week of failed attempts.
Anyway, it was great to meet with all of you. That was a super fun morning, great group of folks. Thanks for including me Ralph. Long drive from HB but worth it. HB was blown out and small and that place was going off!
Keep us "Northerners" posted when conditions look good again and we can do it again:)
-
V,
It was great to see you out there! Long time no surf with you!
That spot is my little gem... whenever the NW windswell is too steep, and the morning south wind is going to ugly things up in HB... it is worth a trip.
Creek,
It was super fun... better than I expected in every direction... including from the local crew who were stoked that it was my birthday!

Time to bump this baby back up! the seasons have changed and the NW swells are starting to show. Isn't it about time we scheduled Timapalooza II? I think Perry Farrell is on board.
-
I may do a little recon there at dawn this Sunday... You know, how the advance Team gets everything dialed in for the big show... Company is welcome.
Watching the charts... The NPAC is indeed coming alive.
Timapalooza II is just around the corner.
T shirts. "Surfing is passion, not fashion... Rag whores be gone!". (I think f bombs on t shirts is bad form)
I think Ralphie and I might b able to cook something up on that front.
I will borrow some of Giant's new Kirkland T's.
