My college bro, Mike, down visiting this past MLK weekend...escaping snow on the Oregon Coast...this sunset lasted about 3 hours...

The other couple were from last spring...imitating a classic fall sunset...

Art imitates life...

My friend Davey Miller is an awesome artist and jazz drummer...ex-pro surfer...Pipeline charger...
We picked up this painting of a sunset over the Channel Islands with waves from him...also, hooked him up with a SUP...

I look at it 100 times a day and never get tired of it...

I thought that you were going home and buying that puppy...CD is blowing up...gotta capture that kid in HD vid...wish we had this technology when we were growing up...

The detail in that painting is amazing...Davey captures the planets coming out with stars...and, even Arch Rock at the east end of Anacapa Island...and, I can mind surf those phosphorescent waves over and over...

This sunset photo is a scan from a slide I took before digital camera technology...super minus tide...near UCSB...only slightly captures the intensity...but, you can extrapolate...

Actually, that "haole" stuff has me freaked out ever since it occurred to me that the guy who invented that word may have just been dyslexic.

i did just buy the 7D-what a camera-way too technical for me but we have gotten some good shots-and it shoots really nice video. Think the guy going to Taiwan with CD has one-hoping to see some good shots.

Yes, it's quite common here as the sun sets into the water. All though I won't be seeing too many more because the sun is working it's way behind the west maui mountains. Winter time is the best from my view.

I am bringing this thread back mainly because I need some sunset in my life. I have been too busy lately to even get out to the water, and well here are my contributions, captures taken from the streaming beach cam near where I live.  First shot is today with some offshore storms in the distance making for some great lighting and glassy conditions, second one is a great sunset a few weeks ago with a little chop in the Gulf.

After a week of surfing from Isaac I went out for a sunset fishing session...the water was amazing and I didn't even care about catching anything.  A 6-7 foot hammerhead popped up right in front of me, their dorsal fins look huge out of the water.  A manatee also came by and checked me out. Just a great evening overall. I was about 1/4 mile out when the sun went down...no green flash though. Not bad pictures from the iphone.

There's been a number of great photo threads on the Zone over the years...kinda surprised that this one has been collecting dust...everybody needs more sunsets in their lives...

Here's the back story on this one...

We had an epic camping/surfing/anniversary trip at Jalama where we were blessed with oily glass conditions with near perfect, uncrowded surf in the afternoon...
Complete lack of wind is extremely rare this time of year for this area...we used to try and schedule wave sailing contests in late May here...

My wifey, Deb, had been watching a mother and her adult autistic son playing in the water…she's a Special Ed. teacher and autism specialist...etc...
I walked past them on my way up to our viewpoint where she had been shooting...and, snapped these shots...a weak front moving down the coast provided the ingredients for a tasty caramel colored sunset...

There were also a couple of pretty cool...and, talented short boarders out that I was sharing waves with...made for a memorable Memorial holiday week...

Jalama is one of California's great treasures,  and far enough away from populated areas it's still a great place to get away from the crowds.  I have some friends who like like to get together there every winter,  seems like the waves in December  are always really pumping,  scary big surf, and lots of wind too, but amazing rides.  Have not seen any SUPs there when it's big, but have not been for a couple of winters.

Aloha seadart...
The "J" is definitely in my blood...I have over 4 decades of driving that two lane country road to surf, windsurf, and SUP surf there...it would make it much harder to live here without it...

Read this morning that they launched an interceptor missile from VAFB yesterday that hit a target missile fired from Kwajalein...

Probably going to be more of these missile launches from there, since Vandenberg is part of the GMD...has 4 of the 36 operational missile interceptors in the system...which to us means that the park gets evacuated at every scheduled launch attempt...the cost of freedom...$40 billion worth...

Here's another sunset shot from there...

One of the reasons that you may not have seen SUPs  when it's big at Jalama...is that we have 100 other spots that are firing...point breaks and reefs = more rides...minus the arse-whupping it will administer...plus, it doesn't hold ginormous surf very well...the rips get too dangerous...has to be clean and light wind with the right tides...but, there are a few chargers willing to take the beat downs...I pick my days...;-)

Never saw this thread before. Thanks Warren for pointing it out. Here are a few sunset shots my wife took of me at County Line a few years ago. She has no photography background at all, but these came out pretty nice. I did do some post processing on them in Lightroom, but nothing extreme, it was all there in the camera.

By the way, we call County Line the poor man's Jalama, on big winter days.

I'm an early morning riser...love me some sunrise sessions...early bird gets the wave(s)...;-)
Still gets me out of bed in the morning for dawn patrol...and, puts the stoke in my stroke...

Some of the most memorable sunsets that I have seen, were experienced in Mexico...
Used to travel to Puerto Escondido quite a bit in my prone short board days...and, the sunsets over the lighthouse always seemed to put an exclamation point on the end of a perfect surfing day...muy tranquilo...

These shots were taken from some property that we have down in the Baja...a remarkable peninsula...
The sunrises are truly eye poppers over the water...and, so are the sunsets back behind the mountains...
Add in the quiet...and, the desert scents...etc...after a day of surfing, windsurfing, or paddling...it's hard to stay awake much past 8 PM..."Baja midnight"...but, that puts you in position to take in the "Tequila sunrises"...;-)

Just bumped into these shots from a slideshow that I put together back in the late 80's while looking for shots of an old windsurfing buddy that just passed...

Stoked that the slides haven't suffered any real noticeable degradation after 30 years...

Looking across the Santa Barbara Channel at the Channel Islands...first one is from late November, 1989...the second was taken January, 1986...

It's a fact that we will all take in our last sunset someday...R.I.P. John Brady...aka "Shady Brady"...hat maker extraordinaire...

Aloha Warren.
I am so glad you are ok. Seeing your post and videos was just something else.
I actually watched the one video where the shots started. Couldn't watch the others after that and will never watch that one again.
I can't even really imagine. Getting sad and all sorts typing this out thinking about it.
Anyways.......thought I would post these here.
One last fall about this time, the other from the other night.
There is just something about that time of day no matter where you are.
Someone can improve on this one aye?

Aloha Mike,
Gorgeous images...thanks for the positive thoughts...

When I wrote this on the post above yours...

"It's a fact that we will all take in our last sunset someday..."

I never thought that October 1, 2017 at a music festival in Las Vegas looking into Kane Brown's eyes...singing along with my soul mate and 22000 other people as he performs "What Ifs", would be my last sunset...but, it almost was...ya just never know...it was the last sunset for the 58 souls that were lost that day in that desert city...lucky for Deb and I that it wasn't our time...despite being in the line of fire for 3 days that we were there...our first trip ever to Las Vegas...have only ever driven by on the way to Utah...but, there will come a time and I hope it's at least as good as any of the sunsets shared in this post...

The number one thing that I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving is simply being alive...

Truly stoked for life to be alive...and, thankful for simple things...like walking on the beach with our Chocolate Labs...Miranda and Molly...and, taking in an awesome fall sunset...what we call the "magic hour" here in what's called the "Good Land"...with a sliver of a new moon in the early evening sky as our "lucky stars" start to come out...

Something so beautiful and so simple is now forever denied for our departed 58 angels that first October Sunday in that desert city of Las Vegas...we'll never drink those 58 angels off of our minds...but, we will always honor them at Happy Hour...with a toast to them and the 58 empty barstools they left behind...cheers...

This was posted just this morning by one of my "friends" on FB, it's of Bird Rock in San Diego, my home town.  I had to respond to it saying that it used to be one of my favorite surf spots back in the late 60's to 1971 when I left town.  I included that I developed a love-hate relationship with that place, awesome waves, but it was before leashes, the pic, as beautiful as it is, shows why.

Sigh....warm places with sunsets..... :)

Not a picture but looking through here made me think of an old video I did when we were out helping Pono do the board and paddle showcase on Maui...10 years ago...yikes. Back when Ke Nalu was just an online magazine. Sue and I had taken off for the day to do Lahaina (and I had a short session at 1,000 peaks.. ;) )...had an early dinner and went to sit and watch the sunset at Launiupoko. No idea who the guy was but he was having fun as the sun set. Steel guitar by Evan Leong's brother Darin. Crappy camera but I like how it came out if I do say so myself.

That looks like a fantastic Winter day on the Oregon Coast...

I took these a couple of days ago on the Central California Coast...looking deceptively tropical...;-)

I took this about a month ago when the tide started melting. I like how the seagull got in front of the sun, but I'd be lying if I said that was on purpose.

Figured I'd revive the sunset thread instead of starting another...a series of pics from tonight...no paddle...just a drive out to the beach for the sunset with my wife. No filter or touch up of the pics.....colors as they were...crazy magenta at the end. Nobody else out there..... :)

Yes, that has got to be the most intense magenta sky I have ever seen.  Beautiful!

We've had a record cold winter here in SoCal. Lots of rain, snow down below 1500 ft elevation today. Our local SoCal mountains have had over 10 feet of snow, and there are still storms on the way. Mammoth Mtn. has had over 30 feet of snow and it's still dumping right now. They anticipate being open into July!

Here's what our cold and windy sunsets have been looking like.
