Just wondering what you would do if a celeb paddled into the lineup. Would you cut him/her any slack? Ask them to autograph your board?
-
We see em all the time out here in LA. Most actors I know just wanna be "one of."
If you see that one, be cool, he's a really nice guy. I'm pretty sure he's got a place in Hanalei.
-
I won't name names, but there are several current and former pro athletes that I see out in the water all the time in LA. Two in particular are amazingly talented on their SUPs. One in particular catches every single wave he goes after, and surfs very well too.
Most of the time they are very friendly and happy to chat too.

I have herd of a few hockey players that like to surf MHB

Saw the scary alien bounty hunter guy from X-Files on the beach at Dogpatch a while back. He was super nice, just gnarly looking. I was actually kinda scared til I saw him hop into a new model Volkswagen Beetle.
Do surf legends count? Talked to Buzzy Kerbox a while back there too. When he intro'd himself I was kinda like, "yeah, I know. "
-
saw Parsons at Patch years ago when he was rehabbing his knee from surfing liquid mountains at Cortes
Have seen Pat Oconnel there a few times-they are more surf celebs though.
-
Between my time sking in Co. and the last twenty years in socal, I've run into a few.
Most seem more appreciative of just being allowed to be one of the crowd.
I've only gotten a "Don't you know who I am?" once. from a very minor celeb, I laughed at her...

What would you do if one was posting on this board? ;)

one time when we were surfing this guy paddles over to my son and asks how do you like the board? My son says its a great board. iwas about 20 feet away the board Robert August what I ride. The Guy Robert August. My son didn't recognize him. I had to tell him later. pretty much one of those moments.

In the 80's I lived in a small resort area where the code was to make celebs feel comfortable, no autographs, no fawning, no nothing. People really made it a point of pride to stay cool and not 'break protocol'. We were all *so* above that.
That was until Muhammad Ali showed up. Several nights in a row I watched him walk through a long hotel lobby on his way to a restaurant. Everyone, even the high and mighty hotel execs freaked out in hushed tones... omg, omg, omfg! I've never seen a person leave a wake electricity like that!

Aspen in the 80's was like that, Del Mar and Encinitas can be that way today.

My neighborhood is still like that. "No autographs, no fawning, no nothing"--perfect description of how I'm treated.
And speaking of Muhammad Ali, a bunch of my friends were talking about the most famous person they'd ever met. Some were actually pretty impressive. Then someone said, "I talked to Muhammed Ali" and everyone else just gave up.

Does being in a checkout line count as a "lineup"?
One of my sister's friends was at a sporting goods store in line behind Bill Gates's sister. When she got to the checker, she gave him her credit card, and he looked at it and said, "Gates--any relation to Bill?" She said no. He said, "I didn't think so. If you were you'd wouldn't be buying such crappy skis."

Sam shook water all over Queen Latifah. He ignored Chris Noth who was trying to pet him because he was watching Diane eat lunch and knew she had bacon. But he's buddies with Chuck Patterson, Karen Wrenn, Connor Baxter, Zane Schweitzer, Slater Trout, and Dave Kalama. I guess if you want Sam's attention you need to be a SUP star or if you're a regular celebrity you need to have a pork chop in your hand.

I would have been all over Lady Gaga and her meat dress

I witnessed PDX Mike and Pono Bill meet for the first time.

Good dog, Sam! Will he ride with you?

You're being too modest. It seems like there's always guys over at your shop whose names are on the gear you sell--Jimmy Lewis, the Burton snowboard Burton, and now the guys who make the Rocket Fuel and the PonoPaddles....

Here's a celeb who got a little more than he bargained for from the ocean:

My dad in the late seventies did his gardening. My dad is a second generation Japanese Gardner. He said Ali was friendly and always came out to talk with him, my grandfather use to do the lawn also.

What were we all saying in that "safety" thread again? Really... a British Actor who is not an expert surfer in the lineup at Mav's in December... really?
Love the hyperbole of the article too... nearly the EXACT same thing claimed the life of big wave surfer Sion Milosky... ummm... except that Sion was taking off behind the bowl... and charging... all day long... and the waves were about two times bigger, likely much more... other than that, the EXACT same thing...
As the late great Chick Hearn would have said... "Not Phi Beta Kappa..."

I can't remember who said it but it sure is true: "The world's most dangerous substance is testosterone."

I thought the quote was "...most fun-loving substance...".

My girlfiend just noticed that Danica Patrick was trying out Standup paddleboarding.

I'm not sure who caused this expression but they had better be fast...

So, Obvious... your "girlfriend" just happened to be at the "Crazy Bikinis.com" website...
Either (1) I need to meet your girlfriend and hang out with her at the race track... or (2) you have difficulty admitting that you frequent the website "CrazyBikinis.com." ;)
I have it bookmarked on my computer. My "wife" does not give me a heads up as to its contents. :D

Was in the grocery store in Jackson, WY and coming down an isle I smashed my cart into Harrison Ford's cart. The cashiers looked at me like I had just clubbed a baby seal (cause we do that here in Canuckistan).
I apologized - he looked at me and said "no problems".
Had Bill Goldburg (WWE Wrestler) in my store buying sunglasses.
Sat behind (and talked to in the boarding area) Sidney Poitier on a recent fight home from LA. (he was coming to Edmonton to give a speech)
Had dinner with Gene Simmons - Business group I belong to - function - (he hit on my wife).
Snowboarded with many famous snowboarders.

Can't top ANY of those :) Paddle on guys, JD

I have never seen anyone special in the water, saw Brock Lesnar on a boat in the Bahamas, hes huge...arms bigger than my fat waist.
Almost all of the famous people I have met are athletes. I have even given Johan Santana and Josh Beckett (two of the best pitchers in baseball) my autograph, does that mean I'm famous? 8) True story though.
When was in college in Jacksonville, FL I had to load a 150lb tv stand into the Escalade of a 6'7" 350 lb offensive lineman for the Jaguars, he probably could have picked it up with one hand, but I felt like a champ when I threw it in there by myself with relative ease.
I have also replied to the posts of a famous ex-cia agent turned entrepenuer who used to drive a ferrari ;D

Man you should have seen it last year when Rhys Smith from the Surfest Surf School had all the Miss Surfest contestants paddling SUPs around my yacht hardly clad in little bikinis for a photo shoot. I told him later I was trying not to pay too much attention so I didn't look like an old perv and he just laughed!
