Title: Calling Florida SUP Racers and SUP Surfers
Post by: EastFL on October 28, 2011, 01:11:58 PM
Hey Everyone:

I'd like to invite everyone to attend the Mayors Sup Cup in New Smyrna Beach, FL 11/19-11/20.  This two day event will feature Elite and Rec Flatwater Races on Saturday and then we're heading to the Surf for a SUP contest on Sunday.  The Rec race is all about fun so it's a great event to try racing for the first time.

We listened closely to racer feedback and kept the Elite race at six miles.  It will be a lap style course with 3 two mile laps.  Contrary to a lot of races we are promoting this event heavily on the local level in an attempt to get a lot of spectators.  It's always fun to have people cheering at different parts of the event! Reach out to me with any questions.  You can register online www.mayorsupcup.com (http://www.mayorsupcup.com)

There will be cash prizes for Men's 14, Men's 12'6", and Woman's 12'6" in the Elite Race

thanks, Erik

Hey JD... glad to hear it works for you.  Please pass along to your N. FL buds as well. I was the one that hooked you and TDE with the cool spot to surf NSB.

MadMax... Sure am! we are hosting a 50+ division in the elite race or you can always race the rec class or surf the open division.  We are working hard to make this a really fun and unique event.  Hope to see you there!

Eric,
Is the surf contest going to be at the inlet? Who is judging the surf contest. Buddies or hired judges. Will there be a beach entry? What if its blowing 40nts onshore like it always seems to in mid Nov or if its flat? Canceled postponed entry fee returned? What prizes for surf contest?
Peace,
Ron

Hey Ron! The surf event will be at the 27th avenue approach.  We are finalizing the third judge now so I'm going to hold off releasing that info, but I can assure you they are very qualified.  We are allowing beach entry, but are encouraging everyone to register early to help the event run smoothly.

November conditions vary, but so does every month in Florida so we are hoping for the best.  We'll offer refunds if the surf is not contestable.  We are awarding trophies to the top three mens and womans.  For cash you'll have to bang out six miles the day before in the elite flatwater race:0)

As one of the top local Stand Up Paddlers I hope you're part of the event!

Reid... Welcome! Hope to see you out.  We have an incredible SUP community in FL and one of the most consistent waves on the East Coast in New Smyrna Beach. (Fingers crossed for good conditions!)

We'd like anyone that registers for the surf event early (www.MayorSupCup.com (http://www.MayorSupCup.com)) to come out to the reception/awards ceremony on Saturday at SoNapa Grille.  It's a great local restaurant and wine bar.

Sounds like fun, caught my first wave at Ponce Inlet.  Unfortunately have plans with the family, will be in the area, so may try and break away.  Let us know if you guys do it again next year.  Best of luck!

I got an engagement party the night before, so don't think I can make the party, I'm also coming from Boca so i think its a bit of a drive,  does anyone have a board I could borrow? preferably in the 8'6 range?

I'll check around Reid.  If nothing else, you can use my 9'6" PSH ripper.  However, I'll see if we can find you a smaller board.

Reid.... we have you set with an 8' or 8'6" custom made by Capt Ron aka AbsoluteTrip on here that you can use for the surf contest.   He makes great boards for the surf.

I cannot surf , literally since the accident i can barely paddle. I'd be curious to see if an experienced SUP'r/surfer would give some feedback on my current board in the surf.

Skoot... sorry to hear about your injury.  If you're looking for feedback come on out and chill with the group.  There will be a lot of experienced paddlers there more than willing to give you some insight or perspective.

I don't own a race board (yet), but I hate that I'm going to miss this.  I live in Vero Beach, about 100 miles south, but no way I could get there in time on Saturday.  Too many commitments.  Hope you have more of these.

Hey EastFL... Wife and I were involved in an auto accident while making a board delivery to south Fl, yesterday. Have to deal with all the aftermath and my van was damaged. Weekend plans to Mayor's Cup now looking pretty dim. We will see but, if not, hope it all goes super-well for you guys....    Paddle on (with soul),     JD

Thanks man... Yes, we are both fine. My van (ole Bessy) took it on the chin for us. Other driver not so fortunate. She ran stop sign crossing our path and on impact her car barrel-rolled a few times. I'm hoping she lives but she will likley lose her left arm which was very mangled. All I could do to reduce bleeding till EMT's arrived... Had to bandaid ole Bessy to get us back to north Florida...
That was a real eye opener. A second sooner to that intersection and I'm taking her full impact on my drive side door! We were both very lucky, indeed...  Paddle on (with soul), JD

Wow, so excited with how the event turned out.  We had 85 racers out on Saturday and 23 Sup SURFERS on Sunday.  We had a couple glitches to learn from in the first year, but overall couldn't be happier.  Flatwater race had some current and wind to contend with and the surf was contestable albeit chunky chest to shoulder high with some onshore "sport" to it.

BIG thanks to everyone that came out to support and participate!

Here's just a quick random sampling of the event.  We had a great awards reception at SoNapa Grille hosted by the Mayor after the flatwater race.
