Title: who started "old"?
Post by: captain twang on June 30, 2011, 08:04:03 AM
hi guys,
stand up paddling hit me last year at the tender age of 51. before that i was into kajaking and mountainbiking.  i sold my boat and lost every interest in radical biking. when i was  a bit younger, i even wanted to  be a downhill-racer. stand up paddling is doing me a lot of good. and i am glad, that i have the chance to do it.  i tried longboarding and boogiebording before, but without any good results.
what about you?

I guess I could say that I am re-starting at the young age of 45. I prone surfed just about daily all through high school and stopped until I was 37ish. Between 37 and now I only get out about 4-6 times a year so the results were similar to ESPN blooper reels. I really enjoy my time in the water regardless of having perfect conditions or how well I perform. Having spent too much time in land locked states with really bad weather this winter I started looking into this thing called SUP and have had the bug since.  I even dragged my wife out to the Standup Roundup event in Mission bay and got her out paddling!

Well I'll be 46 in August and just got up the  first SUP on May 24 2011.  Had the first one I've ever bought delivered June 15th and have been up on it everyday except one since... Just love it.  I had to have both my hips replaced with titanium ones about 4 years ago and really got out of shape.  This SUP thing is a great workout and it's low impact on the hips.
I'm probably doing it all wrong but I'm having a great time doing it.  I don't have any other Sup's anywhere near me...

My buddy got me into it last year. Bought my board last August. Just turned 41. No surfing backround, but have dabbled in whitewater rafting, kayaks, and canoes. The sup addiction is on.

I'm 64. Windsurfed since the 80's. Started doing some longboarding about 10 years ago when my shoulder injuries precluded windsurfing. Raced motorcycles and cars for nearly 50 years, started doing SUP about 2005 or 6 I think. Started with surfing, then some racing, then downwinders. Total addict. I'm a grumpy pain in the ass when I can't get in the water.

I still race cars, in fact I'm racing this weekend in Seattle and next weekend in Portland. But it doesn't grab me like it used to. If I had to chose one or the other I'd take SUP. It would absolutely stun many of my friends to hear that.

My good dreams used to be of racetracks, now I dream of waves.

Started at 38 - grew up in Kentucky no where near a lake so no watersports in my background.  Mainly did team sports - basketball, baseball, etc.  Moved to Cali when I was 34 and had an urge to get a dirt bike; not a good idea (no balance + speed = pain).  Then I tried longboarding but was hopeless - I couldn't even pop up and keep my balance on a 10'2" Stewart!  Got frustrated so I thought I'd try snowboarding - broke my arm on day 3 (end of that story).  Then I found SUP and for some reason it fell into place; I've been at it for a year and a half and love it!  I can keep my balance, catch a wave (albeit nothing too technical yet), and have fun!  I can't imagine any other sports or activities that would interest me at this time.

I'm 61 and started SUP downwinding in 06 at the age of 56.  Been an adrenaline junky since I was 10 straight-lining hills on crappy steel wheeled skateboards, led to skim boarding and then surfing by 12.  Hang glided and surfed through the 70's,  got into windsurfing in the 80's... then lay down paddleboarding in 1990 till the big revelation of SUP in 06.  A fine hedonistic life of goofing off.  My grandson, Kaikea is coming tomorrow and I'll start corrupting him right away... he says he wants to get out on the open ocean and glide.

Here in Arkansas we all grew up on a slalom water ski in the summer and spent our winters in deer stands and duck blinds.  And I've hunted some of the best duck blinds in the world!  I know I'm new at this but, right now, I couldn't care less about hunting anything again.  I can see getting into fishing from the board though... SUP may just be the perfect hobby for me.

The other thing we did in the summer is get pulled behind the ski boat on big 'ol tractor tire inner tubes.  That long air stem would get you every time!

I started SUPing in late 2006, early 2007 when I was already 59 and I am about to turn 63 in a few weeks. I have always been into water sports and I have been surfing on and off since the 1960's, and hardcore windsurfing since the 80's. SUP has re-invigorated my intrest in surfing, which had waned due to crowds and agro attitudes. I love SUPing waves here in California; while I used to pray for wind (and waves) now I am just as happy with a good swell. No wind, no problem.

My biggest regret is that I am about to start doing downwinders in the Gorge this summer, and I am concerned that the physical challenge of doing that is something that, while I have no problem with it now, at 63, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to do that.  I wish I could dial back the clock and have another forty or so good years ahead of me to do this, it is such fun.

I am 50 and bought my first SUP at 47.  I  started surfing at age 10 and windsurfing at age 30 , kiting age 43.  I still windsurf and prone surf when conditions are ideal , but 90% of my time these days is into SUP..flat water or good surf I am on a SUP.  I can  have a SUP surf session for 6 hrs no problem, but prone surfing I wouldn't last half that long.

Today as I paddled out to surf at the Jax Beach Pier (FLA) I saw an "older"guy on a SUP out in the lineup. He was surfing really well and I paddled over to meet him. His name is Bob Breen and he was riding a 9' performance Fanatic SUP. He is from Cocoa Beach and he is up in our area visiting his daugher. The really cool thing is that he's 73 YEARS OLD!!!  And there he was...surfing really well....hooting with joy like a kid....and just having a GREAT TIME!!!!!! Totally INSPIRATIONAL!!!  I just hope I can follow his lead!!!!!!   Btw..I'm 59 and in the last few years have been on SUP trips to Mexico, Hawaii, El Salvadore and this year, Fiji. (pics below)...I'm convinced SUP is a legitimate "fountain of your"......it gives you the STOKE and KEEPS YOU IN SHAPE!!!!!  Here's to a long life of SUP'ing!!!!   Tim

Started paddling in 07, age 46.

First downwinder in 6-08.

Plenty of sports before 07, none water related.  Some ocean swimming and proning, but nothing serious.

The ocean's magic is healing and balancing out some old sports injuries.  Shoulders and core feel great.

Better late than never, that's for sure.

How did I get here?
I'm 55. I've been surfing since I was 10. I've windsurfed for 30 years and this October will be my third year on a stand-up.
After reading tde's post, Bob Breen is my new idol.

I definitely hope to keep going like Bob. Great story!  I've always lived near the water, surfed off and on since HS, tried SUP one day because I was tired of no waves and I don't like to sit on the beach and cook.  Been hooked ever since.

Started in fall of 2007 at 49 when Bill gave me a board.

Grew up loving the water but living in the city, wanted to be Jacques Cousteau when I was a kid. Whenever I could it was fishing, spearfishing, body surfing, NAUI cert when I was 15, lots of water skiing in my teens and early 20's. Then I was pretty much the suburban Dad working in the city since my mid 20's. Coaching kids sports, skiing winter weekends, some biking, canoeing etc.. Took my kids moving on and a brain tumor to get me started. All I can think about is getting on the water.

Started right around 50.  I don't see any reason why there won't be lots of paddlers in their 70s and older within a few years.  I know several swimmers in their 70s who can beat most anybody of any age who isn't a strong competitive swimmer.  At swim meets, 70 years old is common.  Several swimmers around here compete in their 80s and a few in their 90s.  Nationally, there have been 100-year-olds competing in meets.  I know one guy who's been finishing second to the same other guy for 50 years.

Since technique is important, and impacts are low at least in flatwater, I can see standup being similar--old people being very competitive.  And that's to say nothing about paddling recreationally.

I prone surfed through high school, college, and up until about 30 when I moved to Arizona.  I'd go every now and then.  I moved back to Florida and started back a bit.  Got my first SUP in March at 49 and haven't looked back.  Mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, fishing, scalloping don't spark anything.  Good to know I might get 25 more years on the board (thanks Bob Breen).

great thread-all great posts-im not as old as most who have posted-just turned 41-got tired of looking over to Dogpatch while i was crawling at Four Doors and watching Ron House and a few others catch everything in sight all by themselves around 06-7. Finally my lower lumbars said thats enough crawling-i got out-walked over to Dpatch-waited for RH to get out-talked to him-decided right there i wanted in-wife bought me a 12-6, 46# Becker-have never looked back and have only supped for about 3-4 years. I hope i am doing this at Breen and Munoz age!-Lower Lumbars much happier too!-now my wife sups several times a week with me and both my sons-my youngest is really good and i hope someday i am taking the grand kids out to start the SUP stoke early!
SUP on "old" guys! :D

Turn 65 in July.  Surfing since 1964 until 2/14/08.  Broken neck in Mexico, paralyzed shoulders down. Surgery, two rods, 8 screws to put me back together.  Rehab for past three years, can't see to paddle the old long board or "pop" up to stand.  Enter the SUP, YAHOOOOO!!  Back in the water this past April.  Just flatwater for now, 4-5 days a week, back on the Mountain bike a bit.  Motorcycle next.  Into the surf just around the corner.  Can't keep an old dog down!!

I'll turn 57 in two weeks...just after retuning from our Maui vacation!  Surfed most of my life and at the urging of my son in the spring of 2009, I tried SUP and the rest is history!  Surf SUP, DW SUP and race SUP.  The whole family is into it.  This stuff is probably like crack or atleast good moonshine.  We still use any means to get into the water, surf, sail, fish, but by far SUP.  I am a better person because of it!

Started SUP as I turned 50 exactly, in '07 after a lifetime of ocean sports. I think SUP trumps them all (surfing/windsurfing/sailing/kayaking/surfskiing) for many reasons, that have already been expressed on this forum. One of my personal reasons, is that SUP motivated me to clean up my act, lose 60 pounds, and get in decent shape. Now I feel just great, and have a blast paddling up and down wind, and surf better than I ever did prone!

I feel like a kid again ...

Age 47, SUP'd for the first time last December at Lanakai Beach with Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks - had a lesson with the whole family. Really enjoying the sport due to its accessibility (had my wife and daughters SUP'n 15 minutes into the lesson) and the workout aspect.  I've been surfing and (mostly) windsurfing since the early '80's and like most of you, love spending time on the water.

Just purchased a second SUP board (from Paddleboard Specialists, Five Star experience) and looking for more boards to share this sport with friends and family.  Here's a paddle I did last weekend with my oldest daughter: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/95122840 (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/95122840)

Really like the way this sport can fold in with Windsurfing...if the 17 mile trip to the Bay/Ocean results in sub-planing winds, break out the SUP and cruise for an hour or two!  Also trying to get better at SUP surfing - with much respect...I'm staying away from the packs at our local breaks and finding my own waves to surf.

Enjoy the 4th of July holiday, try to get lots of time on the water...

MAX

Narrow surf windows... always want to be in the water... don't like sitting around... waiting for it to get better.

Saw Laird doing it in a video.  Couldn't find a local board so I ordered a Naish from Windsurf Warehouse...

It arrived three years ago today.  My first paddle was Fourth of July on Mission Bay.

Hooked... beyond hooked... Crazy hooked.

46 Years old.

I was sitting on my boat drinking coffee one early morning and saw this guy paddle by in the mist. First I thought "I want to do that!" Then I thought, "That guy's too far back on his board."  :D

Now I paddle with him... he still stands too far back!

Started surfing in late 60's, hung it up mid 80's. Made a come back in 05 but had a hard time competing with the long boarders. Started SUP in 07...anybody want to by some short boards from a young 55 year old?

Started surfing at 44 when my wife and I moved to the beach, previously just had kayaking background. Got my first SUP a year later to teach myself to be a better prone surfer, learn the waves, exercise and to fish off of (Laird 12'1").

Took to it and decided I really loved SUP, still working hard to improve and taking an occasional beating but now at 48 I can ride an 8'10" board (I'm 6'4" 220 lbs) in good sized surf with sloppy technique and ride pretty much anything I see. And I'm much, much better on the prone board now I understand HOW to surf.

Surfing has changed my life and has made me a better person. In spite of what people who know me say.

I guess I don't qualify as "old" but wanted to represent since doesn't seem like to many of us ladies do on this site.  I first tried SUP at 32 and thought it was the coolest thing ever to be "on top" of the ocean like that just checkin out all the amazing sea life and appreciating my surroundings while getting in a nice workout at the same time. (At the risk of sounding like a commercial, I do live on Oahu and have supped some beautiful spots I didn't even know existed.)  Then I got my own board last year (Angulo SURFA 9'0) at 34 and have been addicting to sup surfing- haven't gone flat water paddling once since I got the surf bug. COMPLETELY ADDICTED.  I agree with Ake G when he said "Surfing has changed my life and has made me a better person." It's hard to deny the ocean's amazing power and ability to keep you coming back for more!!

Rented a 12' 2" x 26 SUP on Maui in 06 on a windsurfing trip at age 47, paddled every morning for two weeks on Sugar Beach, no wonder I'm addicted after a start like that!

Haven't windsurfed for 18 months now, should sell the rest of the gear but can't quite own up to not windsurfing anymore after 25 years of obsession.

Find it hard to explain SUP to people that don't know it, for me it's three sports that roll into a lifestyle, flat water cruising and teaching friends, downwind and surfing. SUP has got me into surfing like the old Mal never did. Hope I can do it till I drop.

And one of the best things about all this is the new friends I have made all over the world, genuine camaraderie and aloha.

Last year on holiday in Thailand at the age of 44, I rented a Starboard SUP for an hour. Although I was more in the water than on the board when I started, I was instantly hooked.
Besides swimming and a small Kite episode 6 years ago and a bit of body boarding on vacation I had no considerable water sports experience until then.

Back in Germany, I immediately bought my first board. By now I own three boards. I am a bit land locked so I mostly do flatwater paddling and some lake downwinders and try to go to the ocean as often as possible.

To my own surprise I managed to surf small waves on my first SUP vacations in France.

I could also bring my wife into the sport and she is also very excited.

It seems to me that I've just been waiting for SUP was invented
I think I can say SUP has changed my life in a very positive way.

Same for me. I'm 46. Ruptured my achilles at 32, moved from the islands to the NW, had kids and lost touch. This winter I tried SUP on Maui and holy cow, the switch was flipped. 4 months later, I'm 20lbs lighter (my surfing weight from my 20's) and much, much happier.  To paraphrase "Saltwater Buddha", I'd forgotten how much I missed it.

Very thankful for all the folks that have spread the word and got so may of us re-stoked.  Stoked enough that part of me is ready to bail on software (which has been very good to me) and get into the sup biz somehow.  My accountant will never understand ;)

Love this thread! I'm another one of those guys who surfed for over 30 years but getting in the water less and less as everyday of surfing left me on the couch the rest of the day with ice bags and vicodin. A friend loaned me his giant SUP for a Pendleton camping trip for my 41st birthday. I caught my first wave and that was it. I'm on my stand up as often as I can be, which is most days either surfing or flatwater, which I never thought I'd enjoy so much. I just got off the water in Convicted Lake in the Sierras and it was awesome. Beautiful water surrounded by snowy mountains.

Seems to be a common theme. I was talking to a guy in his 70's a few days ago at Sano who grew up as one of the Malibu crew in the early 60's. He'd given up surfing 20 years ago because of crowds and bad manners in the lineup, but got on a SUP a year ago and now he's like a stoked from again.

Hopefully the marriage gets easier in SoCal.  Lots of baggage for you guys to deal with down there. Not too many people blaming Laird up in the 206.

Maybe this is too simplistic but, the boards are just too damn expensive for this thing to really take off like it should. Seems like us old guys are the one's that can afford them.

btw/I saw some horrendous plastic ones at Big5 for $300. After judging harshly, I decided that as lame as they may be, it's still better than loading up the bong and listening to indie rock.

careful Huski!-there are a few guys down here in socal already that had the same thought!-maybe keep your software rolling and do a lot of research!-maybe go somewhere where SUP is still in the honeymoon stage-SUP and Socal are now well into their marriage and SUP has already slept plenty of nights on the couch and no lovin!! ;D

Good one Huski! ;D
yeah socal has a lot to deal with-and it always will-surfers barely tolerate other surfers-great quote from anothr forum-totally true. SUP is still low man on the totem pole and honestly i dont see it changing for a long time-which i why i have adopted the i dont care im suppin where i am capable and am not a danger to anyone and am willing to put up with stinkeye and even verbal confrontations.-which is most spots. Typically im at Dpatch which is as mellow of a vibe as exists in all SUPdom, but occasionally when the mush at dpatch gets to me i venture to faster and better waves-just a few makes it worth it.
ANyway SUP on my PAC NOR WEST amigo!

I'm 34, so not quite as old as some of you.  I surfed on our lake waves and went on vacations with the family when I could.  Graduated went to college, got engaged, and all but stopped surfing.  Still watched it on TV while drinking a beer, threw in a DVD once and a while, and never seemed to loose the desire to get back out.  Bought a short board off craigslist and finally got back out in the surf, but it was much harder than when I was younger.  Tried SUP at a local demo and got hooked.  It's great to be a stoked surfer again.

Careful there you young whipper-snapper!  We can call each other "old" but you should show some respect!  Try "wise" or "experienced" - failure to show respect will result in a beating with our canes!!

Started age 67; will be 69 next month, and have raced cars, bicycles, marathons, kayaks, outriggers, and surfskiis. While I'm an in-lander and love flat-water racing, I've raced open ocean and bay races. I've owned six SUPs, but I'm down to four, and look to race every weekend. I finally got the wife (60) racing this year, and while she likes her outrigger, the board has been her choice this year.

Started SUPing in 2006, mostly dabbling in it when I wasn't MTBing or canoeing or taking the kids to soccer.....My preoccupation with it has grown considerably since then.

Turned 50 this past winter, and found myself thinking more and more about SUP when I wasn't skiing (all types, nordic, bc, alpine)....I'm hooked!  I was paddling a couple days after ice-out the end of March.... :o

Just got back from my 2nd paddle of the day, 1st one was early AM glass, tonight was a nice breezy 15 knot offshore easy run for a couple of km's, followed by the requisite slog back upwind to the beach.  WTF?  I just can't get enough.  Obviously some age related dementia......I better paddle again tomorrow. ;D

It seems I've found my cohort: 50-ish long time surfers/reformed windsurfers who have been doing standup for a few years.

I wonder how much of this age bias is real, how much is related to the title of this thread, and how much is dependent on the readers of this type of message board?

I joined a beach club a few years back.  The breaks around the club are pretty junk by island standards, but a cold beer and a hot shower keeps me from driving elsewhere...most of the time.

Started standup as a way to make the small days fun.  Now I mostly do standup because it's so easy on the body.  The only thing that hurts after a session is my muscles...and perhaps a bruise or two.

OK, my turn:  learned to surf while my family lived in Honolulu for a few years in my teens (early '70s) but gave it up when we moved back to Seattle...had no idea anyone surfed the Washington coast or Straits.  Never lost the stoke though and finally tried it again in 2006 at Westport.  Saw a guy standing up in the lineup and thought "what the hell is THAT?"  Had a few good sessions but could never get in the water often enough since the waves were three hours away.  Tried SUP two years ago, got my own board last summer and have been sweepin' ever since.  Turned 53 last month.

I am 48, learned when I was 45.  Have been windurfing since '76, kiting since 2001, mostly in Delaware where surf is pretty much non existant.  It wasnt until we got our place in PR a few years back that I got the surfing and then SUPng bug.  Totally hooked now!

According to my drivers license I'm 48, but it lies because I'm only 12 (except for the morning after I forget my drivers license age and play too hard). I grew up part of the time in Santa Barbara and spend summers on my boogie board as a teenager. I could haul the boogie board on my bike but not dad's balsa longboard he still has from when he was a kid. When he would bring a spare board I did a little surfing but the beach break near home wasn't much fun and I knew I was not ready to hit Rincon with him.
I did some windsurfing in the early '80s and liked that a lot. What I didn't like was all the trouble of finding the right part of the beach to head back to because I am so nearsighted.
In college I tried rowing on the river in Portland Oregon and loved the speed and being on the water but quit when they started getting up and going to the gym to exercise at 5am and not hitting the river.
My first SUP experience was Memorial Day. My girlfiend's sister borrowed a couple of boards and paddles from work and brought them camping. It was a blast on the small lake where we camp.
My first board should be showing up soon (I started making shipping arrangements this afternoon). I just wish I could afford a second board so our teenager could come along. He isn't excited about having to use the old windsurfers I picked up off Craigslist to try out.

Stated surfing in 1968, started windsurfing in 1982,  started paddling in 07'at age 54.  99% stand up and sailin when its windy, very little prone surfing these days.  I try to paddle everyday mostly waves and some flat water.
What a rush, not to mention the workout.   The view of the water/waves, land
and wildlife is greatly enhanced while standing.  Not to mention all the new friends one makes, all in all it === FUN

Yeah, just as long as you don't get onto any of my waves, dammit!
Only kidding, I guess I have to show up to complain, don't I?

Just read thru this whole thread for the first time, boy, what a bunch of old fu(ks here, with few exceptions, I can say that, I'm 61.  8)
Can't get in enough water time, still working to many hours.
My water time started out on Wind 'n Sea (SD), in diapers around my knees, playing in the shorebreak, 1953ish, with my mom and her (married) girlfriends, on the beach, trying to ignore the hoots from the Pump House Gang.
Seriously.
