Title: Buckled Board
Post by: Southbay on March 03, 2009, 10:04:00 AM
I am so bummed.  Super choppy and confused ocean this morning, but managed to Paddle in to a few nice fun head high plus beach break waves in Hermosa Beach this morning.  That was the fun part.....pulled out of one and had a big closeout behind it.  Ended up taking two on the head and surfed for another 30 minutes.  Didn't notice this until I got back to shore.

In 13 years of surfing I have never buckled a board before.  This is totally buckled right?  Will this board ever be the same?  It is a 10'3'' Lopez on EPS foam.  This is not something that I am going to try and do myself, so I'm taking in to Whit Stiks in Carson.  So bummed...

Hard to tell from the picture, but the good news is that the stringer looks like it wasn't broken, so it may not be too bad.  Best to get a professional advice. But, how'd you get lucky enough to fine head high waves in So Cal?

The conditions sucked, but on the SUP, still fun.  It is head high in front of my house in Hermosa right now, and is suppose to be well overhead tomorrow!  Looks like shortboarding for me for 10 days.  Turns out your right, the stringer is not broken and it should be fixed by next Friday!

That's pretty much what the Penetrator looked like after it got slammed at Spartan's. It's a little heavier now but it's just fine.

the strength of most epoxy boards is in the epoxy skin
(think of the aviso CF epoxy boards which are hollow)

any board will have a weakest point on the skin where the combiantion
of rail rocker and thickness concentrates the stresses

looks like you found yours and the skin tried to buckle but the
stringer and the foam stopped it from total catastophic failure

shows its well built - a cheap board would have no stringer and soft foam
and would have snapped

its worth mending with a large patch - itll add a bit of weight but
you shouldnt realy notice it - get it properly done

Got it done right, at Whitstik in the Los Angeles area, and it looks and performs great.  I don't even notice it.  Good excuse to add to the quiver though! Ha!
