Title: Is a Goofboard useful?
Post by: Zooport on October 26, 2016, 02:15:23 PM
I am not getting in enough surfing time before work because of the late sunrise this time of year, was thinking of getting a Goofboard to practice my balance skills and cross-stepping plus maybe get a little exercise.

Anybody use one?  Opinion?

Zoo: Just do a "goofboard" search here on the Zone and you'll find lots of previous posts.  I made mine and like it a lot....its been sitting for quite some time now though but I'm sure I'll get back to it this winter.  I couldn't hardly stand on it when I started and after a couple of week of consistent practice I was cross stepping.

Can't hurt! Its a pretty good balance exercise and pretty fun in short bursts of 5-10 min sessions.

Check out an old slackline thread from wetstuff Jim. Lots of good interesting ideas there.

I still stand on a goof board with either one large Indo bladder, or two small indo bladders, or jfit nubby half balls. Chi- Gung is interesting on the darn thing to say the least.

It helped me a lot. Would never have made the transition to sub 8' boards without it. Reconstructed knees still wobbly after all these years!! 8)  8)  8)

Woo hoo!  Can't wait.  Unfortunately, it gets bad again by Christmas, but at least we'll get a reprieve for a few weeks.

Zoo:  FWIW, here's a short clip of the board I made with dimensions.  I think I banged it out in a hour or so.  Again, lots in the previous posts...

Nice vid.

I've been meaning to make a Goof Board for a long time.

Starting out on a carpet looks like a good way to learn. It seems to slow down the roll speed a bit. I think I'd lose the socks though.

Have you noticed a difference in your SUP skills from it?  And yes, lose the socks.  :)

I like my goof board. My big problem with using it is that my small living room is strewn with girls' toys, which means I have nowhere to place my goof board.

I like my two Indo Boards. The inventor of the Indo board SUPs a lot. In fact he came over to the UK and took part in a national SUP race, and won his age category. His balance is unreal - unsurprisingly, perhaps.  I like the Indo cushions in particular, and it's nice to support other SUPers.

I got the freestyle goofboard, it is shorter but it can be used effectively in either direction.
I used it to help me get ready for dw board which is 26 wide.
It really helped a lot. I use it almost daily to warm up before gym as balance testing aids in firing up the central nervous system which helps with lifting.
I'm sure there are better systems out there but the goofboard is a winner in my eyes.

Zoo:  To answer your question as to whether it has helped me.....

I know its helped with respect to confidence in cross stepping....I contend if one can cross step on a short narrow goof board then one will be able to make that same movement on a large SUP.  I think it will improve balance skill as well.

Nothing to lose!

Even on carpet, the goof board is a tad more difficult to crosstep than an SUP.  The difference is with a GB you have unlimited nose time. (And you can hang on to a piece of furniture when you are starting out).

I went ahead and bought one and have seen maybe a little improvement in my SUP balance from it, so far.

The thing I didn't count on is how much fun they are.  It's fun to be able to do a "surfing" kind of thing in your house in the evening.  The other thing I didn't realize is how much of a workout it has been.  I am sweating after about 3 min on the thing.  Pretty cool device.
