I met Zane paddling out to Mavericks. 3rd generation windsurfing royalty. Couldn't have been nicer.
Then again EVERYONE is a bit sheepish their first time at Mavericks, with the exception of Garrett McNamara who was all jacked up yelling at the entire line-up his first showing.

Garrett then mellowed and made friends. However given his wipeout this season Mavericks might have finished that guy off.
Zane also just won back-to-back Waterman

Such a great guy. Was a great kid too--the definition of stoked. Kudos to Mom and Dad, they raised a goodun'. The rest of the family is spectacular too, Matt is a hugely talented surfer and windsurfer of course, but also one hell of a videographer, Shelby is a top ranked surfer and involved with autistic kids and breast cancer survivors.
People like that make me think there's hope for humanity.
Zane won the Master of the Ocean as well:

He's got a lot of gymnast DNA in his system. That trait seems to flow through all the good surfers, skateboarders, snowboarders, bmx stunt riders. There seems to be an awareness in their bodies that allows you to twist and gyrate and maintain balance where mere mortals cannot. Folks who can see in their heads what their body will be doing all the way to the landing amaze me.
We've been friends with a family where we lived in the mountains of So Cal and their middle son was (I swear) a circus monkey growing up. We weren't surprised to see him on the cover of Snowboarder when he grew up. He was the kid doing handsprings and flips while the rest of the team ran onto the soccer field.
He's been my fave SUPper for a long time. Always pushing himself and seems to simply have the most fun.
I remember when his dad Matt and Robby Naish were the main dudes in the windsurfing world when it was just starting to explode. And of course Senior Hoyle.
Zane is a top notch person in addition to his athletic prowess. He has shown grace, and love to our son (how has special needs) he will reach out to him whenever he has the opportunity and shores his stoke. The whole family exudes the aloha spirit... Look at what they do for Stand-Up-For-The-Cure, reaching out around the world to help those in need.
Go get 'em ZANIAC!
Sweet vid. Zane is legend already, right there w/Laird, Kai, Kalama, Naish. Great athletes who inspire. That race board looked hard to handle, but not for Zane! And I though I recognized that shot of the road (from my only visit in 2000) from the water as the one that leads along west Maui.
