Title: Sunova Ocean Board
Post by: coldsup on February 27, 2016, 01:53:38 AM
Just for interest....some pics of the new Sunova Ocean board coming out of the production process. These are nicely priced in the UK .... around the same as the hybrid 2016 Allstars so got my eye on these....hope the ocean board stacks up as well as the surf ones do.

Dang that thing is beautiful. Would hate to put a deckpad on it.

Looks a bit weird IMHO from the pics but once it has been properly photographed and finished I reckon it will look superb. I wonder how light it will be.....

10 kg is the estimated weight.....that is light!

It would be great to see the tail. The nose does look to have a hint of the Ace about it. But it is the extremely narrow nose of the Ace that defines it as much as the nose (and also makes it a bit tricky in some conditions - but also fast), so if this has a quite different tail it will be a very distinctive design.

Is that a Faast or a Search, or an entirely new Ocean board that isn't on the Sunova website yet? If the latter, do you have any more details on how it differs from those other two?

Thanks!

area10, I  think  the  1st  picture  is  the  tail ,  looks  like  there  is  a  small  keel  , but  I  can't  see  a  fin box ?????

Are you sure? Looks like the nose, deck up to me (with the other one deck down). But I'm not very good with pics from strange angles and unusual shapes so I really have no idea!

Great pics to keep us guessing, though haha!

Don't hate me but I think it's a little ugly.  And believe me, I know ugly when I see it and it's a little ugly, maybe very ugly...

Give the poor thing a chance! A baby doesn't look so cute when it's being born, but all cleaned up and dressed up later it has everyone fawning :)

Here you go guys.....some more. Kelly Margetts helped design and test the board. Afraid I don't know much more apart from it will be off the production line very soon.

Well, that now looks more like the Bark Vapor than the Ace. What a great marketing tool the internet is... maybe this thread will turn out like the Seabreeze one on the SIC FX, with about 100 posts of speculation about a board no-one has yet seen or ridden :)

And some other ones...I don't have any connections with Sunova by the way......I just asked them to share any production pics  as I am struggling to chose an open ocean race board and heard about this one.....and they were very kind to do some sharing

Yup, social media works wonders for sports gear like this. I should get a job selling their gear over here :D

So, quite a different nose potentially and a concave right down the board....bit like Allstar but more subtle? It looks a fair bit lower volume which I like.

+1

I think the shape looks sticky too. Let's see if they actually have any winning results with it this year.

That first pic looks very much like the BIC Earth board which is both the ugliest AND worst paddling board I've ever been on. Hopefully this paddles better than that log. Funny because I think the Sunova surf boards are nice looking.

Those pictures make it look even more like a DC

Does anyone know anyone who has actually raced or used the Sunova raceboards? Not sure if they are a tad fragile.

me me me... pick me! I'll test one.

Seriously, someone has to start and sacrifice oneself to give one a whirl.

The "next" container die in May should have some of these I'm told
Knowing Sunova's construction I'll bet they are NOT fragile
And as far as beauty that will be determined on the finish line

Collaborations between talented shapers and talented and experienced paddlers often turn out pretty good. So I'm keeping an open mind on this one. It looks like another take on the fat nose ocean race board concept like the Ace, Vapor, NSP/DC, Sidewinder, FX boards. So it could be good, as long as you don't race in pure flat water inland.

Great to see another company take on the big windsurfing brands. I hope Sunova can maintain enthusiastic distribution partners in Europe in the face of the windsurf brands' virtual market stranglehold.

If ugly is functional, I'll take ugly every time.  Bring on the ugly...

Will look forward to feedback in the real world. I was told a few of the surf shapes have snapped in Portugal....but I've seen the stuff STC goes out in and no issues there. However, never heard anything at all re the race shapes..

Do you know much about the UK dealer?

Yeah, I've been in touch with the UK distributor. He was very helpful. PM me if you need his details - but I'm guessing you have them already.

Sorry about my spelling on the last post

The Next (after the March container) container will have the Open Ocean in it I expect it will be in MAY

Hope that is a little clearer

I can't wait to try this board. I got a quick paddle in on the 14' x 24" Faast at the Sunova Soposup demo last week, and it felt very light and quick, both up and downwind. A little too tippy for me as an all-around ocean race/downwind board, but impressive secondary stability anyway. If the new Ocean Faast is a little more Vapor-like than the flatwater oriented Faast, it could be a great design.
