Title: What board is closest to Starboard 8'10 wide point
Post by: IRideYellow on January 30, 2016, 06:28:01 PM
I rented a 8'10 Wide Point yesterday and went to Indicators and today Privates.  What a stable board and fun to ride.  And I have to say it was nice to not have to work so hard to stay upright like I do on my 8'10 Speeed or my 7'10 Wardog.  It was so nice that I want to get the carbon version but $3300 (with tax) is just too dam much.

So what I'm looking for is a equally lightweight board (18lbs) that duplicates or improves on the the 8'10 Wide Point's surf and stability characteristics.  I want to stay at 8'10 rather then getting a longer board to get stability

Is there any such thing out there?

Thanks,

This is what I have done in the past and would do in your situation:
Take the starboard wide point to Stretch or Kirk and have them make something similar that is closer to what you want.

You might check out the new 2016 NSP DC (Dale Chapman) Surf Wide models.
They make a 8'10'' x 32" x 4 5/8", and it is super light.  I don't know the exact weight but I imagine around 18 lbs.  And the cost is about half of the Starboard.  My friend just got one and it looks great, although I have not ridden it yet.  Aloha.

Sounds like what you're looking for is a big guy short board, a "hero"' board..;) Several good options come to mind.

First, I believe WarDog designed the Wide Point series for StarBoard. It's worth calling him and pick his brains about one of his Production models in carbon construction, the ride should feel similar (or better) then the wide point, and price wise should be more affordable then SB.

Another one to Consider is Focus Torpedo 8'9 x 32 x 41/2 146L in their Carbon Const. Stability, performance and affordability. Jason in Capitola Surf and Paddle is a focus dealer and can order you one.

Another great option we don't hear enough about is the 8'8 Rawson Impala production board from Focus, 8'8 x 31 1/2 x 4 3/8 139L at 19lbs its slightly heavier then the Carbon boards but has a lively flex thats smooth, snappy and very durable.

Let me know if you want to sell the 8'10 speeed..;)

Happy hunting,

Alon

A custom from Strech or Kirk is a great option if you're not in hurry. Ordering a custom mid winter means you're not gonna be able surf it until the spring, when the season's over.

Hi, Vic,

I saw you out there on the Starboard today at Privates. I figured you must still be in board exploration mode with the different plank.

I pretty much got stomped by the conditions, was never in the right place at the right time and spend a lot of time as closeout/shorebreak road kill before going in.

The 8'10" Wide Point was the one I rented in Maui and I was also very pleased with it's combination of stability and surf performance(within my limited abilities).  I didn't know they were so expensive.

Wardog designed the original Wide Point with Starboard a few years ago. His stock 8'10" WD is almost half the price of the Starboard.

Easy enough to demo one and find out.

Lot's of good suggestions in this thread, also consider the 8'8" JP Wide Surf Pro. The pro construction is super light and durable. I think the JP would be as stable, but a bit faster and more surfy......and $1000 less than the Starboard. You might find one used if you cruise craigslist.  Try Searchtempest, a great way to search around and see what's available all over the country.

Yes, I designed, developed, and named the original 8'10" x 32" Wide Point that Starboard put into production...this was the first pulled nose progressive short board style board added to their lineup after we had a board design/testing summit on Kauai back in 2010...it was a game changer board at the time...high performance SUP for bigger guys with 5 fin option...their 9'5" Wide Point was also based off of my 9'6" Stoke design...but, they got the rocker all wrong...waaaay too much in the wrong place...;-)

The 8'10" WD is one of my most popular models...our 8'10" WD demo board definitely gets a workout...it's paid for itself many many times over...;-)

We have a California, USA built brushed carbon version for $1899 in stock that weighs 18.1#...includes non-H20 absorbing deckpad with integrated tail kicker, GoreTex membrane vent plug,  big wave rated leash with safety quick disconnect, and customized WARDOG ® signature bamboo/honeycomb sandwich fin set with 5 fin options...(Quad, quad + StubNub, Tri-Fin, or 2 + 1)...

We also build custom one-offs all of the time...vid clip below is an 8'10" x 30" WD that we built for Woody...pics below that show a stock production version next to Woody's custom...

Hey Carl,  I saw you getting bruised down at SupCheatLandia so I stayed out of your neighborhood.  Looked painful.

Yep time to go board hunting.  I'm getting tired of falling so I admitted I'm older, worn, and unable to pivot turn which the Speed requires to get turned around quickly.  I'll probably keep trying to pivot. Like you I'm stubborn - never say give up.

Yea they are pricey.  But the not carbon are under 2k.  But I like light weight boards.

I'll check it out, the JP.   Searchtempest - great find.  CL really needs to add just a few new features to make it more usable.  Wonder how long until they get a cease and desist from CL

Sunova Skate 8'8 or 8'10 You definitely know the quality and performance Not to mention the killer price

OR

Fanatic AllWave 8'9 (2016) or 8'10 (2015) These boards are high performance and easy to use again not to mention excellently priced

PM me if I can help (or we can get you a ZONER DEAL on a SB Widepoint)

I'd take that deal.  The WD 8-10 is probably my wife's next board too.  I agree, that design is highly surfable, stable, blows through whitewater, solidly built as long as it fits your size.

That explains a lot I can't get my head around the rocker on my 9.5 it just doesn't make sense and just seems to slow the board down

It plows because there is too much rocker immediately in front of the standing area...the Naish Mana 9'5" had the same rocker issue...makes the board feel like it's paddling in molasses...;-)

I rented an 8'10" Widepoint for a week in Mexico. I liked it but didn't feel it had as much glide as it should.

I demoed the 9'2" Sunova Flo when Creek was down in FL. I really liked it. It was super stable, great glide, speed, adn loose on the wave. I want to get on the 8'10" and see how that floats me. Take a look at the Flo, I want one as my "stable" go out in anything.

I'm 6'2", 208 lbs. for reference.

Well, I bought a used Widepoint carbon 8'10 and now spend much more time upright and expending less energy - which means I stay out longer.

I'm using a home made GoofBoard to see if combined with the longer surf sessions I can get improve my balance game improved enough to ride my other less stable boards with confidence.  The 7'10 is not too difficult but the 8'10 Speeed is still is a incredible amount of effort to be remain upright on in anything but glassy conditions.

If anyone is looking to buy a Wardog 7'10x31.5 or a Speeed 8'10 ping me and I'll add your name to the list and let you know when and what I'm going to sell.
