Yup. Happens. One more reason to get back on your board quickly. It helps Cove and Shep a lot--they hop up on their boards in one smooth move. The biggest Tiger I've ever seen was in the approach to Makena Landing.

Maybe carrying a gun with you when you paddle surf wouldn't be a bad idea. I guess that would be a PPD?

So sad.  Makena is no joke.  I passed over a big shark there a couple months ago.  I was in my OC-1 and I was getting close to the turn in to Makena landing, and I thought I was going over a rock shelf.  Freaked me out thinking that I was too far in and then I realized the big grey shape I was gliding over was no rock.  It was really big and I did not stick around long.  I got in a told Cove, cause I  knew it would really freak him out and that would make me feel better!

Its true that I do not mess around when I fall.  I am usually half way back up before I get in the water.  I know that it is way more dangerous driving home.....but it can't hurt to minimize my time "in" the water.

Didn't keep all of us downwind addicts from trying to do a run that ended in Makena today....unfortunately the wind didn't cooperate.

Most get bit were snorkelers/ swimmers and some feller with his leg dangling off a kayak fishing.

Sharks bite to see if you're food.

I was in the Kahului harbor SUP'ing the middle peak over the winter when Ricco's board got bit.  There were 4 of us SUP and a handful of longboarders.  Bit the board and split.

Fear of sharks is not understanding why they bite.

I spend alot of time in the water shooting photos, that's when I get uncomfortable.  Surfing or SUP, not so much.

The fatality today is really sad. Woman lived in Kihei. I feel very bad for her family and friends.

They're not just on the south side. I've seen plenty when paddling Maliko. Good motivation to fall less and re-mount quickly.

Maui's got nothin' on Oregon. Freezing cold, heavy, dark water, and huge Great Whites. Fear is ripping out beyond the jetties on a sailboard, missing your outside jibe, having a yardsale followed by a swim to catch your board and reposition for a waterstart back to the beach. I used to hear the theme from Jaws begin to play as soon as I got outside the break. When I'd go longboarding there, I felt like a bobbing fish lure, all dressed up in black neoprene, just like a seal.

Of course it's more dangerous driving to the water than being in it. Tomorrow, I'll be sure to tell myself that.

Wonder whats more common,

Shark bite with a wet-suit or without?

Most of shark incidents I've seen on the news had a person just wearing normal swim wear. I feel like, the chemical smell from the wetsuit deters them away.

The water is cool in Hawaii, but never wetsuit cold. Unless you're diving. I don't think that this is a factor. Tigers are a curious bunch.

Maybe the County could rig up a side-scanning sonar to sound when something big comes into the vicinity.  Trouble is, the alarm would be constantly sounding because "they" are always there...

Didn't keep all of us downwind addicts from trying to do a run that ended in Makena today....

8 to 10 lifeguards on 4 rescue PWC's launch at noon from Big beach each day and zoom up the coast.  I was out on my usual lunchtime swim/paddle as they passed.  We waved and smiled, as usual.  Just another day on the ocean.

I'm aware of the remote possibility of a visit from Mr. Chompy.  It's easy to know if he's out there, just stick your finger in the water and taste it.  If it's salty, he's there.

I stay on the board if visibility is low.  No swimming.  If the water is clear, I wear the goggles, pay attention and look around.

I've never seen a shark in Hawaii.  A few shadows, but that's it.  I'll probably crap my pants if I see Mr. Chompy, but that won't keep me out of the water.  The water is so amazing here...

As a fellow skinny person, I think we are safe SB.  :)  Sharks have probably looked me over a hundred times and kept going.  Just like a fat person at a buffet.  Where's the beef!

I'll take you to see one any time Larry. There's a cave with blacktips in it probably within a hundred yards of the house you're working on.

sad but part of life. at least she died doing something that she loved much better that way when your time is up than in a hospital bed alone.  as for driving   being more dangerous yes aand no IMHO You get in a wreck and there are folks there to help you cops  ambulances good samaritans  you get picked up driven tot he hospital   you get help. but in the ocean I see any ambulances hanging around.  sometimes there  are people who help and sometimes not  sometimes the shark goes away and sometimes  comes back for seconds. To me there is primal fear probably genetic form our ancestors about being hunted and being eaten. I think that is why movies like jaws and jurassic park morbidly fascinate/scare us . still the ocean has it allure as we all know the  solitude the peace the adventure.

in my 50 years of surfing i have seen 4 sharks 3 for sure were gw. each time I left he water fast. each time I was surprised  I did not know they were there.  But until you have been warned or stalked by a hunting animal it is a  different feeling. I still get  the here jeebies when I think about my warning growl form a mtn lion while hiking   Yeah I know I am off track   sorry.. There is a thread on a  site called survivalist boards ( no  I am not ) but  and it is very addicting to read.. the thread is called       Creepy stories from the outdoors. - Survivalist Forum
there all sorts of  encounters described  by folks in the field   any way sorry for going off track  my thought and prayers to this woman and her loved ones.

We in San Diego have another predator to worry about

Yeah, and they won't leave you alone once they start mugging you for a fish. I used to do a bit of spearfishing in Puget sound, and if a sea lion knew what you were up to they'd follow you. I had a five foot ling cod get reduced by half by a sea lion. I shot another five footer through the spine, grabbed the spear on both sides of his head and swam it right to the boat because there had been a mugger close by a few minutes before. I've had them swim up to me and looked right through my mask. Like they were establishing dominance.

Sad for that lady, she lost an arm. Probably would have survived if she'd had immediate help. That's a big part of the fear I think. You're alone.

...and some feller with his leg dangling off a kayak fishing.

That was Patrick, who was a windsurfer visiting from the gorge, staying with a friend of mine. Only reason he was kayaking was because there was no wind that day. It was devastating for the guy who was kayaking with him; he was not able to do anything for him and could only watch Patrick bleed out while he tried to flag down a passing boat. Very sad.

Last November I was windsurfing upper Kanaha and sailed past a 12' tiger right at the surface. Just past the outer reef.

Maybe I shouldn't say this but...

For some unknown reason (to me or anyone I ask) I AM A SEAL MAGNET They flock to me and they seem rather aggitated around me (barking diving under me chasing me in on waves) Even back here in NJ where a seal is somewhat rare they follow me and bark.

These are preditors with TEETH and swim faster/better than I can imagine (in other words catch me in a blink of an EYE)...Did I mention they have TEETH!

Hate those pinipeds

One of the comments below the article said this:

"Word on the street is that she had a bunch of fish on a line and was trying to attract dolphins. If this is true, let's not perpetuate unnecessary fear of sharks. People swim with Great Whites and Tigers every day on the North Shore of Oahu without any incidents."

Probably nonsense. I hear that kind of thing related to every shark attack. "She was mean to the aunties" is a popular one. People want there to be a reason why someone got bit, one that might exclude them.

A more telling factor was all the rain and brown water.

This is a very interesting site if you want to scare the bejessus out of yourself. Remember that a small fraction of sharks are tagged.  http://oos.soest.hawaii.edu/pacioos/projects/sharks/

Oh yeah, when I lived in Santa Cruz and surfed Ano Nuevo, we were concerned about Great Whites of course, but we were also very wary of being attacked by an angry sea lion protecting her baby.
