Do you guys think it would be too much board for 85lb female just starting out, no surfing experience?
for just paddling? I'd say it's fine, based on teaching smaller kids on my 9'2. I'd teach her to surf before she tries to standup paddle in surf though, i think the wave knowledge one gets regular surfing is invaluable when one starts sup surfing. plus it's much more dangerous on a sup IMO. that said most sups will double as excellent beginner boards for surfing because of the width and stability.
My surfing friend's little daughter is trying to SUP. Her issue with boards, is not being able to turn them. He even tried taking the fins out.
So I'd say shorter, would help a lot.
For an 85lbs? Sure its a great board. Stable would be easy to paddle. Going to feel big when you start turning it. But if just flatwater cruising and such, would be great. Once she gets better, she will want something smaller. Also a great board for you too, LOL! The new PSH 9'6Big Boy wouls actually work much better. Suoer stable and will turn much better.
i`m looking at getting a 10` JL surf series, i`m 5`10 210, is this board gonna float me?? been surfing for over 20 years, and feel good about my water skills, but not sure about my weight and size of board?
I have never used that board but my buddy does (or did actually). He is @175 and thought is was not very stable. It ripped on the wave but he never really felt comfortable on it. Now he is on the PSH 9'6 All Arounder. He's selling his 10' JL is you want a used one at a good price. He said the PSH is smaller but more stable.

I owned the board for about 2 months. I weighed 205 at the time. I had to be paddling every second I was on it, to stay upright. Not recommended for your weight. The JL 10'4 is 10 times easier at your weight.
My personal opinion, is the vee running too far forward makes that board best for people under 180.
yeah ,that is what i was thinking. but its hard when you dont really know what u r doing!! but i do know that i dont want a big board, and that it seems everybody is going smaller so they can surf better. i like the 10` but i guess i need it wider??
At 210 even the 10-4 JL might be a little sinky as that board is thinned out nose-tail and not even 4in thick
