Title: Bryon Olson best shaper in the world!...?
Post by: raf on July 19, 2013, 09:56:42 AM
According to the head boss of Tower, their new in house shaper, Mr. Bryon Olson, might be the best shaper in the world.  I never heard of him, but then I am way in the boonies.  Is this guy really quite possibly the best in the world?

Also, when did Tower start putting advertizing on The Zone? Can I advertize my business on here? Has nothing to do with SUP but would be cool.  ;D

Byron is a friend. A really good epoxy craftsman, (from my experience), and shapes some really good looking boards. Don't know about THAT claim.

Tower is a welcome site sponsor of the Zone.

They have made changes that we view as very smart and which have responded directly to some of the critiques which had been raised here in the past.  Companies that listen and respond tend to move forward.  Now that Tower has opened a USA production facility and shaping is being done by a shaper with chops...well, they are a much different target, but, of course, competition remains a reality.

Good answer! I have been looking at getting a iSUP from them for over a year now for family.

Good to see a company respond to customers.

Can I pass that rate info onto others who are in the SUP industry? I think they would be super interested in getting more exposure through the best forum on SUP. Thanks!

Tower and/or their affiliates still seem to be spamming up Craigslist.  Some of their listings fall into the misleading category.  Doesn't look like the practice has been curbed based on a quick search.

Linter I am afraid he may be...looked on his face book page and his profile picture has him on a wave ski...I do not see that as a problem, but a plus...the deeper his skill set in wave craft the deeper his understanding of what works and why...don't think one dimensional...

What's the problem with spamming Craigslist? Isn't that what CL is for?

oh, i have nothing against waveskis, since that's what i rode before SUPs (and I still have my Infinity waveski in the garage).  i've had dealings with olson before and it's olson (who will be the first to tell you he's the best shaper in the world) that i have a problem with.  i wish tower the best of luck with him, but if their association doesn't last long or ends in acrimony or maybe even a stress-induced heart attack on tower's part, don't be surprised.

Tower stopped spamming my local craigslist and I appreciate it.  The problem was that if you as an owner posted an ad, it would drop of the page due to the 5+ posts per day by Tower.  Now that they have stopped, my ad is still up on the first page from 4 weeks ago.

Linter...got you...I thought I remembered him having a rather strong personality presence on one of the wave ski forums, but that was many years ago...was hoping he mellowed with age...at the time he could not have been mistaken for a self confidence problem... ::)

I thought Jerry Grantham was the best in the world, he even told me he was.
He's now on the big island, educating them.
Actually he is a pretty good shaper, you would be too if you've shaped 100,000 boards.   ;)

If he sees this, I could be in trouble,,,,,,,,,,,, hea Jerry, long time, no sea!
What, I can't stay at your house when I come over?

Steve Boehne of Infinity is and has been a legendary surfboard / SUP shaper, and he shapes wave skis.

Now that being said, those butt boarders are the biggest group of wave hogs I've ever met.

Yeah, they sit so far outside, go for everything and with that paddle they can make waves that aren't even waves yet.

yes we should ban paddler with double blade. think about it, SUPer have one blade its consider dangerous, when you have two blade, it 2X more dangerous. ;D

We should just ban everyone but me and people that I personally approve of. No other way to ensure its safe out there.

It was repeat confrontations between some aggressive butt boarders and long boarders that originally got the SanO paddle ban put in place.  I really don't hold any grudge against them, as a lot of them are good friends.
I just met a young wounded vet who was taking his 3 year old son  to the beach for the first time by himself in a wheel chair. I helped him through the sand, and said he wanted to some how try surfing again. I told him a wave ski would be perfect for him, and told him the guys at Infinity would hook him up. I hope to see him out there snaking me on every wave.

A 12'6 race board for $895?!

This is a perfect board for the guy who started the "why do sups cost so much" thread ;D

Can't wait 'till a SoCal zoner demos it & reports back... Kinda curious.

He's only renowned now!

I was actually going to get a board shaped by him in May or June...until I found an old civic wagon which took the place of my lifted 4x4 Suburban as my surfmobile (needed to save gas).  Anyway, my buddies introduced me to him.  Never heard of him before.  His resume is pretty impressive though.  My buddies were telling me he as shaped for some big names and some big companies.  I still want to see some of his shapes and talk about his theory on shapes (He said a lot of the things I thought were innovative are gimicky).

Which is actually how he came across to me a bit.  But there is something to be said about confidence.

From the press release it sounds like the Tower CEO hired a guy he thought was a solid guy, and gave him some corporate props saying we got a good one.  There are a lot of really good shapers out there and each one of them is influenced by the road they've traveled.  I didn't read anything into the release that was too flowery.

GT,
Those civics last a lifetime.  I used to work for the company that did the groundwater monitoring out at American Honda in Torrance.  They had a slew of long term test cars out there, and these two 1991 awd civic wagons with a mere 5000 miles on them.  I must have asked 10 times for them to sell me one.  They were pristine...argh.  No sale, but not for the lack of effort.  Sold my 4-runner half a year ago, and put racks on my wife's new mazda 3.  Even with wind resistance, we still get 32-34 schlepping two boards down the fwy.  You've made a wise move (all the wiser with +$4/gal. gas).

Good God!  They're not claiming that's PonoBill, are they?

Obviously not, I have much bigger hooters.

I saw one of those Tower inflatables today. Yikes--they're so very ugly. Might make a nice camping bed though. The guy who owned it was quickly blown up against the far shore at Nichols. He's probably still there. They look a little better when they're at least 200 yards away.

You're wrong about them being ugly.  According to the Tower website:

Not only is the Tower Adventurer inflatable stand up paddle board one of, if not THE, best looking inflatable SUP on the market, at 6" thick, it represents a giant leap forward in inflatable SUP rigidity, which makes all the difference in the world.

Plus on one of, if not THE, last lines in the description, it has a list price--therefore an actual value--of $1000, or 70% more than what it costs to buy.

I thought that was an inflatable party roof for a jeep?
With two of them you might even be able to float the jeep across a river?
