Yesterday I did a fun downwinder from Sandy Beach on Oahu's East side to Kaimana Beach in Waikiki with two friends, Ed Wheeler and Jimmy Fitt. The first part is very rough and great training for the Molokai race because the race finishes in those rough waters off Potlock and you come in along China Wall as you enter Maunalua Bay. The waves were small but we caught a nice little one along China Wall and ran it along the wall, the rocks were just a few inches away from me. The first video is the short version that just shows that exciting run along the wall, the second is the extended cut covering the whole downwind run. We were all on 14 footers, Ed and Jimmy on SIC F14's, I was on my 14' x 28" Blue Planet Bump Rider model.
If you are planning to do the Molokai race, you should do this run at least once to prepare for the last few miles. I have taken a few racers on coaching runs and they said it made a big difference in their race. Took me a second to realize you caught a wave. At first I thought you had switched to light speed paddling and was thinking how nice it would be to have that extra gear Blueplanet has.
Haha, light speed paddling, I wish...
The Gopro always makes the waves look smaller than they really are and this one really was small, so it looks like we are not even on a wave.
At China Walls, even the small waves wall up nicely along the rocks but you have to catch them right next to the wall where they are steep enough to ride.
And I liked the way you threaded between that guy and the rocks... with no rudder.
