Title: How Many Boards Do You Have?
Post by: Beasho on March 09, 2012, 01:54:35 PM
This is not so much a straw pole as an observation.

I was in my daughters gymnastics class a couple years ago and overheard two surfers saying "You can always tell how good a surfer is by how many boards they have . . . #1 How many do you have?  #2 I have three how about you?  #1 Just two boards."  I chimed in and asked what they were talking about after which they asked "Well how many do you have?"

I responded: "I don't know!"

PS: I just went out to my garage and counted 10 boards.

3 SUP's, 3 windsurfers, 2 Surfboards and 2 new Costco soft-top boards for my daughters.  This doesn't count the 3 boogie boards, nor 5 boards (2 windsurfers, because someone cancelled my subscription and 3 prone boards because that too has become retro) that I banished to the East Coast or Sold last year.

Pretty new to the sport here. Just one Wardog-designed, Art Colyer (North Pacific Surfboards) 10'3" x 30.5". Wife has one of their 9'9" x 29.5" so I can borrow hers when I'm ready to surf a little smaller board.

I've also got a Mike Stewart Science MS7 41.5" bodyboard and an original release (or close to it) Boogie board from the early 70's.

2-Sup's.
2- sailboards.
1- 5'0" belly board by John Mel.
1- 14" hand plane.
2- pairs of bodysurf fins.
Over a year ago I sold all my fish hybrids and longboards.
It was the first time in 40 years that I didn't own any surfboards.
The current quiver will cover everything I do in the ocean.

1 sup, 1 longboard.  I can borrow my daughter's shorter longboard for beach breaks.  Being primarily a weekend  & vacation warrior, it's harder for me to justify a quiver than it is for my wife to justify paying tuition bills for my daughter.

9' 'performance' proner longboard
7'2" 'fish' proner
9'8" Element surf/all-round sup
10'  PSH surf/all round sup
14'  Naish Glide - flatwater/distance/ocean paddles/downwindah's
7'6" Glass Cascade hi-wind sailboard
8'4" wave sailboard
8'6" Mistral yard ornament
12'4" big assed board that is a driveway fixture but I'm gonna take it out for fun some day

I share many of the boards with my wife and daughter in order to avoid possible legal action that could result in my living in a travel trailer with more time on my hands than I want.

At least as interesting a Q is "how many paddles do you own"?

I have 10. I think.

If I had bought early on a carbon paddle that you could adjust in a semi-permanent way, then that number might be about 2.

I don't suppose anyone knows anyone round here who might make such a thing.... nah, didn't think so....

All about to go through the roof as I have just accepted a job with the largest water sports manufacturer on the planet and part of my role is Product development and testing.  Now comes the fun ;D

Since I own the candy store, I go through boards pretty fast.  In the last 16 months: gone from an 11' to 10'4", then 9' Fusion, then 8'11" Pearson Arrow and now the 8' Vibe is gathering dust as I fall deeper and deeper in love with my 8' Soposup Gremlin.  Just put the pinline on my 7'6" Neutrino, so the Gremlin love affair might come to an end less than 3 weeks after it was first consumated.

So on my 7th SUP in 16 months.

I sell them as soon as I go to the next one.

8 boards in less than 5 years. Whoulda thunk it.... ;D

14' Vec Custom Downwinder
12-6 Starboard Cruiser
10-6 C4
10-0 Uli Steamroller
9-8 Starboard Element
9-0 South County

Had and sold....11-2 Starboard Blend, 11-0 Oxbow.

I have more paddles than boards, 11 total, but 2 of those are now art paddles on the wall, 2 are piece of crap aluminum cheapos that I should probably use for tomato stakes this year. All the rest are now for family and friends to use since I can setup my Maliko for surf, downwind, or flatwater.

I don't know is a really good answer.

Like how many motorcycles do I have. Don't know.

I don't collect anything--stuff accumulates, or maybe accretes is a better word. Like ship models. When we sold our house in Portland I gave the new buyers a library full of books and a bunch of pond yachts. They thought I was being generous, but I was just shedding a dead skin.  I have books and ship models stuffed in every possible location in our hood river house. I didn't want to screw with them: Accretions.

I'm trying to get rid of stuff, not accumulate more, but there's a new Bullet, and Dave is making great boards, and I'm getting interested in windsurfing again.

Damn.

Let's see...Okay Boludo, here goes:

One Collab (7'9" by 26 Roger Hinds / Corran Addison Mashup squash tail single concave dumpster diver inspired quad)

One Adam (7'9" by 26 Roger Hinds inspired Adam Cumming / Corran Addison Mashup... thumbtail single concave quad)

One Custom Enigma (8'3" by 27")

Two SL Kook model Enigmas (coming next week) (8'3" by 26", 8'8" by 26.5" step up)

One Candi (14' by 25" reverse bow pintail Enigma Sprinter)

One Chazz (14' by ? downwind, surf, open ocean board)

One Naish 10'6" Nalu

Prone:  6'8" Bessel, 7'6" Jeff Johnson, 6'0" Imagine assymetric Quad, 6'4" Jeff Alexander Gemini, 6'8" Jeff Alexander Gemini, 6'7" Country thruster, 6'9" Country Nomad Quad, 7'6" Country Sunset Gun, 6'5" Country modern twin, 8'8" Country speed needle.

Three and a half paddles:  Ergo Molokai, extended grip Molokai, extended grip Maliko, (and a Wiki blade that my friend had lying around when I thought the Molokai was too big of a bite).

Quiver was really thinned in the last few months due to heavy hints from wife... and my desire to perhaps park a fun vehicle in the garage... (I keep getting weak, then backing off)...  Gave away two Roger Hinds SUP boards, two Imagine SUP boards, one QB Kanaha Paddle, JC Peter Mel Machine, Country thruster, Stewart S Rail Fish, and sold three QB paddles.  Sometimes it is cooler to give stuff away than sell it... My plumber (who has six kids) was pretty stoked on his new quiver!

The Enigma (8'3" by 27") will probably be rotated out soon.

Going to make a new Collab with 4 inches at the crown rather than 3.5 and give the old Collab to my buddy's grandson.  Just gotta get it on the CAD.

Tim

I have 6 surfing sup, 1 touring down winder and 1 rec model which some might say should be a surfing sup.   Surfboards are piled in a corner and since I don't use them any more I don't care to count.  Windsurfers are also gathering dust and there are plenty of them as well. I also have 4 jet ski's.

But really your surfing experience comes from not how many you have but instead it comes from how many you have ridden and how many times a day you use them.  I can't count all the boards I have ridden as I used to make them and changed all the time.  I have been in trouble or the dog house most of my life because of my water time at least with my first wife. Wife #2 tells me to go surfing so all is good now. Looks like my next mission is to teach my 4 living with us grand children the joy of surfing. Then maybe the other 6 will probably tag along. They are lucky because I can equip them all it they want to learn to surf.  I had to save to get my first surfboard, and then beg for a ride to the beach.

Well . . . since I own the store . . . that means I own the inventory (or at least that what the bank says) . . . and since it is spring and we are receiving lots of new boards right now . . . I would say about 180. With that number to grow substantially when the next containers arrive.     ;D

1 Morey The One

2 Boogie Boards

I just started SUP in September and already have:

SUPSports 9'6" Stoke Wide
C4 10'6" ATB

Still have:

Becker 7'6" egg lie down board
Custom 6'2" Thruster (shaped just like a CI Biscuit)
2 wakeboards - can't' even remember the brands
Some boogie boards for visitors and my kids.
6 pair of skis

Now I want to pickup a 12'6" touring SUP.  I think I'll give away 3 pairs of skis first.  I try to clean out everything every couple of years but it does just seem to stack up, probably because I never return anything due to the hassle factor.  I like Bill's "accretion" theory.

In order to keep freight cost down (cause we are a bit far away from everything) - I do generally accept shipments all at once.  It's a bit of a crap shoot in terms of cash flow - but "if you don't have it - you can't sell it"    :D

SUPs:
Starboard WidePoint 10'6"
Imagine Sprinter 14'
Isle 12' (the Craigslist barge I learned on and keep around as a loaner)

Surfboards:
Becker Pro Series (never been able to ride it, but wife bought it at a yard sale years back so cheap it must have been hot; someday the kids will ride it)
Costco Softop 8'

So I guess that's 5, but there will be room for more once I sell the 17ft Kayak that's been gathering dust.

SUP's: Two.

Starboard 12-6" FreeRace - has become my wife's by some sort of osmosis...

Starboard 14' Coast Runner.

Mutant: 12' Mistral SST - former windsurfer, now reglassed/expoxied SUP. The board I started on 5 years ago. Still use it for downwinding and staying humble.

Next on my list....a pure downwind board...maybe a JL M-14.  (though I'd really love to try a SIC..)

Is that Kalama board officially a resident of Ponohouse?  Or is this a long term loan. ;D

An update on my surf-oriented quiver. All Gong Sup models. I surf mainly short-period waves, and I weight 100kg.

9'6" "Soul", 141l, a classic 50/50 railed, stable noserider shape, single fin (various models), for when I feel like styling, cross-stepping, and for cruising / flatwater fitness, and for friends to try.
8'9" "777", 125l, a "gun" shape, heavy rocker, thin rails, narrow nose & tail. C-Drive thruster setup for control. The board for big conditions or outer reefs or when I feel scared. Can be used for fitness training in heavy chop.
7'4" "Shake", 130l, a wide "egg" shape (shortboard outline but longboard rocker, C-Drive thruster setup), for crappy conditions (backwash, wind, chop, rips)
6'9" "Mutant", 116l, a "wombat" shape (mini-longboard, C-Drive quads for drive & speed), for when I look for more horizontal speed, when I feel pumped up but want glide on mellow waves
6'8" "Miapolis", 120l, a true "shortboard" (more rocker, narrow nose & tail, Scarfini H3 quads for the most power in tight turns) for clean powerful conditions (well, waist-high at least :-), when I want tight vertical turns in the pocket (well, that's the intention anyways, my abilities aren't there yet :-)

I am quite satisfied with this quiver, which covers all my needs. I could reduce it I guess if forced to,
quiver of 4: the 7'4" could take the role of the 6'9"
quiver of 3: the 8'9" + 9'6" could take the role of the 7'4"
quiver of 2: now that would be hard. I guess I would cheat and "give" the 9'6" to my wife :-)
quiver of 1: selfishly, only the 7'4". But to have a boards that friends could try means rather something in the 8'6" - 9' range, wide but with a thin tail.

The 6'8" and 6'9" are going to get "upgraded" by similar ultralight "pro models" in 100% carbon construction (not an ounce of glass, 2 carbon layer top, one bottom..).

Great quiver, not alot of gongs over on this side, and I remain curious.  If you are ever over here let me know, would love to try the 7-4.  Bon apetite.

I may go to Seignosse mid-June.
You can have a look at the map at: http://www.gongsup.com/-Team-.html?lang=fr (http://www.gongsup.com/-Team-.html?lang=fr) ton find "ambassadors" willing to let people try their boards.

Or you could try to drop a note on the Gong Forum to see if there are people with the 7'4" in the southwest.
