Title: Timber Paddles
Post by: Wazza66 on March 13, 2008, 10:31:03 PM
After reading about how many guys are breaking carbon paddles I am wondering why more SUP surfers don't try timber paddles?
The feel and look of a well crafted timber blade can't be beaten in my opinion.
Whenever I use my timber paddle at my local breaks, guys using carbon paddles are always commenting on how they can get one and how cool they look.
I believe after using both, that the timber paddles are more forgiving on your arm/shoulder joints.
Sure carbon are lighter but are they really that great?

My interest in building wooden paddles has had me doing a lot of research. Wood breaks too. There is a lot more talk of carbon breaking because there are more carbon being used. I've heard of a number of wood paddles breaking and broken one of my own. Carbon is lighter, wood is beautiful and flexes better. Both have their advantages and shortcomings

Lots of very good wood paddles out there. I've paddled the malama, a gillespie, and the ones I've built. The gillespie was nice, the malama amazing (I'm building one of a similar design). There is also the kinimaka, whiskeyjack, johnson big stick and others but I haven't tried them yet.

Here are some threads on wooden paddles.

My impressions of the Malama. I can't imagine it possible to build one better than his.

Hmmm, I'm not one to cast aspersions, but your screen name and blatant promotion of all things wood  has me wondering about your ties to the timber industry.  I must ask: Stoneaxe, are you in the pocket of big wood?  Or do I have that backwards?  The Sizzler indeed! :o

LOL....Chan...I always enjoy your posts...You are a writer of few words but many messages.  Sizzler...OH NO... :o I think I'm going to regret telling that story.

And strangely enough my nickname on some woodworking forums is treefarmer...and yes I actually am, or at least used to be.....I smell a timber conspiracy.

Bob--try not to use "smell" and "big wood" in the same thread.

Chan--I can vouch for Bob. Without pointing out his shortcomings, if there's anything in his pocket it's probably just a chapstick.
