Title: First fun waves on the Sunova 8'10 Speeed
Post by: supthecreek on June 11, 2015, 06:50:44 PM
I have had my 8'10 Speeed for a few 2 weeks, only one clean tiny session till yesterday... I was jonesing to turn, on a decent wave...
Yesterday we had a most excellent session coming off high tide.
The waves were a bit full and soft, but that allowed me to feel it out a bit more.

Great crew, lots of stoke, warm air... water a chilly 50 degrees.
Proners were in full suit, hoods, boots, gloves...... sucks to be them ;D
My feet were freezing after a while, so I hit the beach for a warm sand break.

My daughter filmed.... she had to change cameras, when her's went dead, so it looks like different days (my cam has minimal zoom) ;)

I tried to put up a cross section of footage, to show all sides of the board in action..... paddling, punching through waves, taking off etc.
nothing steep or juicy..... but fun.

What a fun day....jealous!

You looked good Rick...you got a nice smooth style! You also make cross stepping look way too easy.

Board looked really nice as well. I think you got me sold on the model. Time to start saving for another board.....AGAIN  ;D

WOW!!!!!!  What great rides and cool turns!  I love the very first ride....you pull in almost effortlessly and just start turning such smooth lines - and even the kick out looks chill!  Minute 3:27 is also one of my favorites......I think I'd have to freeze frame that and make a still photo for the man cave!!!!

Congrats on the board too....looks like its a perfect fit.

You are the man Creek!   8)

Good vid and nice slicing and dicing. The cruising speed was demonstrated in the last ride where you out ran the foam into the next section.

I was a nice clean day for surf. That spot was working well. Simultaneously I was ~6 miles south with some of the other usual SUSpects.  ;D

SWEET  Thanks for sharing.. I love the video... Fun waves, but shows the versatility of the board.. I bet it rocks in decent and big waves... Its so cool when you finally find a board that says, "Hey buddy, I am your best friend for life"  The board fits like a glove from the start, always good times(on small and big waves) and never lets you down...  Stoked for ya.

Thanks guys.... it was awesome to feel at home on my Speeed, right off the bat.
I have much more to explore..... I am stoked big time.

I worried that it spoiled me, for my quiver, so yesterday and today, I took out my 10'6 Alana to see.

I was inspired by what happened.

My time in crap conditions on a narrower, lower volume board, gave me back my leg speed and agility.
I rode my Alana better than I ever have, because I got back my surefooted quickness that is SO necessary for good longboard surfing... yowza yowza!

Dang... who knew being hooked on Speeed would be so good for me ;D ;D ;D

Note to self (repeat often):  "WhatsSUP you should not be jonesing for one of these boards....Creek and others lead to down the path to the Allwave 9'5" which is a great board and you need to REALLY spend time with it to develop basic skills and become proficient on this fine board".....

Curse you Creek!   ;)

Whatz^ ;D ;D ;D
Please enjoy your 9'6... it is a wonderful board!
Don't let every new board turn your head.... wait until you feel a strong urge to move on.

It's a process.
The road was long from 11'2 x 36 Avanti.... to Allwave 9'6 then Allwave 8'10...... to 9'6 Prowave.... to 8'11 RAW
Every step required new skills and reaped big rewards.... I have enjoyed the journey immensely.

Now, at 67, I am on a timer.
If I want to achieve certain goals in SUP surfing (and I do) I need to go hard and fast.

Going to this board was a leap of faith and a serious commitment.
I knew I needed to do a LOT of balance work .... and lose weight to be ready for it.... to be honest.... I was more than a little nervous.

I'm making a video of the process.... the benefits have been eye opening... I feel like I have turned the clock back many years:)

Creek, will look forward to your video, but...
it doesn't include any scenes of you standing on the bathroom scale in your tightie-whities, does it?

That would not be "eye opening", ... more like "eyeball gouging"  :o :o

SJ: Yep...gotta listen that voice in my head!

Creek:  "Don't let every new board turn your head.... wait until you feel a strong urge to move on."   I hear ya....I've only got about 7-8 hours on it (AW) in small surf and its still very much a new toy to me and I feel like I've just scratched the surface of truly enjoying it and learning how to surf it.  Really looking forward to the progression video as well as others you post always fun to watch!

Great video, story and surfing Creek!
Does that board surf as well Backside as Frontside?
50 degree water.  No wetsuit.  Now thats motivation to stay standing ;)
Looks like the board works well in the transitions…like when you went over the breaking waves paddling out?
You have great balance…keep the stoke alive.

lopez.... it is very easy going over waves. The scoop in the nose lifts up over white-water very easily and is so thin that there isn't a lot of resistance.
The width of the nose gives added stability as the wave hits. I haven't had it in anything crunchy yet, but, so far, so good.

here's a few backside waves from another thread...it went great, I can't wait for some bigger waves.

Nice music, Airto, one of my faves.  Have several vinyl records in Pleasanton.
