I live in Los Angeles, not the cleanest water in the world, but I've never gotten sick or had any adverse effects from surfing / SUPing during or after rain.  To be honest, I almost never get sick period.  It's been at least ten years since I was sick enough to rest.

So yeah, I can't help it, even if it's raining or has been, I want to go out.  I always see other people out too, granted not as many.

Is it that big a deal?  Anybody have any stories or experiences with dirty water...other than being disgusted by it?

so do i-just spot checked Salt Creek-might go out just to battle and run over spongers..
Creek is relatively clean during-after rain.
Would never go out at say Huntington or some spots in san clemente-DOHO etc..
find out where your nearest storm drain-river/creek inflows are and dont go near them, there is really nasty stuff coming out of these.

I surfed the santa ana rivermouth for years with no ill effects  :o that I know of. Now I don't know if I would.  :-\  That was along time ago.  The red tides, now that was gross! Surfed the HB pier late at night when your legs were glowing in the water  ;) Now I live where you can actually see the bottom through the water  ;D

that you know of!-i hear ya 808!
Ihave never suped there-met some guys out at sano one day that say its their favorite!- lots of sandbars-really fun according to them-only time i would consider it is dead of summer with minimal flow from the inland river of toxic stew.
Same thing with Poche on Dana/SC border-big storm drain nearby but now there is a abig UV bacterial killing set up there to minimize pollution-wish they would build one at Rivermouth!

I went out the day after the floods last spring in Rhode Island....sewage pump station right next to the beach was flooded out and they were working on it when I went out. I was the only one on the water in some beautiful glassy chest to head waves. I might have skipped it if it wasn't for the fact that I hadn't been out in awhile and was jonesin bad. Didn't get sick but I was being very careful to fall in as little as possible and when I did to try and close up everything tight. I work in the field....environmental design.....water and wastewater...CSO systems....I know all too well what was out there...nasty, nasty, but I couldn't help myself.

We as well in the rain and wind, Friday & Sat at Morro Bay rock CA , lots of rain, side off wind 8 to 15 knts, waist to overhead waves.  Loads of fun, water 55 deg air 55 deg,  water clean so far.  Looks like 4 to 5 more days of the same.  Lots of smiling faces in the line up all us old guys seem to like it the most.  I would stay away from major run off areas for lots of reason.

Yeah, we have it pretty good not being in a major metro area.  Morro Bay, questionable sometimes, Arroyo, nothing but mostly clean runoff.
I just wish I could get out there, my knee is fu(ked, looking at maybe going under the knife this winter.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Thanks to Donna Fry, Skip's wife, San Diego monitors it's beaches. She also successfully lobbied to get other California cities to also monitor their beaches. A lot of this information is available online. One site is http://sdwatersheds.org/wiki/Beach_Monitoring
Surfrider also has a lot of information available.

Ocean Beach tainted by sewage spill upstream

County environmental health officials Thursday posted warning signs to keep people out of the water at Ocean Beach, after an estimated 1.2 million-gallon sewage spill in Santee flowed into the San Diego River.

County crews posted signs warning of sewage contamination at Ocean Beach from the San Diego River mouth to the Ocean Beach Pier. The signs and closure will remain in place until tests confirm that the water is safe for recreational use.

Flooding at a sewage pump station at 9210 Carlton Oaks Drive in Santee created the sewage spill, which began at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday and continued until 2 a.m. Thursday, according to health officials.

They said all of the sewage flowed into the San Diego River.

County health leaders on Thursday maintained a closure notice for beaches from Coronado to the U.S.-Mexico border because of sewage-tainted flows in the Tijuana River.

They also advised people to stay out of coastal waters for at least three days after major rainfall. Storms flush numerous pollutants, from bacteria to pesticides, to the ocean. Problems are particularly acute near storm drains, lagoon outlets and river mouths

paddled out and caught fun old mans with just my son for 3 hours Thursday-water was ovaltine with branches and other fun stuff-super fun-lifegaurd/ranger truck came by-watched us and left-big stormy 4-6 peaks-bouncy slow rides after initial drop-really skittery on my low weight 9-0. tried to set the rail on several occasions-not happening-few good wipeouts.
Anyway now im sitting here with dark clouds forming in my nasal cavity!
SO far it was worth it-see how i feel tomorrow-raining again right now in Dana!
