Any thoughts on paddle length for river running?  I would think a paddle on the shorter side would be better for cross-bow stokes etc....  My flatwater stick is 11 inches above my height.  Need to cut my new Mitchell to length for river running.

I run mine 4" shorter than my all around paddle. The shorter length really helps with keeping bent knees during rougher rapids.

I go the other way.  I like my paddle a bit longer, like a race paddle, to keep me from bending over too much.  There is no right or wrong answer.  Try an adjustable paddle and see what suits you best.

I go with 6-8 inches over head for whitewater

I think everyone has their opinion on lengths etc

My rule of thumb is my height+the thickness of my board (where I stand)+5" for surf/whitewater and +7" for flatwater.
