Anyone make a good longboard shaped 10'er?

I'm starting to think of Spring and a new board and what I want is a 10'er x about 30", longboard shaped (think noseriding), not Sub Vec shaped (think spear the tourists).  Also, I don't want 9.6 or 9.8, I want ten, not 10.5 either or 10.6, i want ten!

The problem seems to be that the new 10ers are all super wide and thick.  I just don't need that.  My ideal volume is right around 155L; too much over that and I'm nothing but a cork in the sea.

The new psh 10 WAA may fit the bill but it's not out yet and who knows if it'll ever be out (ha ha, that's just to get blane's goat!).

So, thoughts anyone?  Got any ideas?

Thanks!

looks good but too narrow for me and probably pretty low volume.  thanks anyway!  good first reply!

i think you will find that the longboard style boards are narrow
as part of their makeup

takayama alii 10-3 x 27

C4 slingblade 9-9 x 27.25

perhaps go custom ?

linter

You're right, most of the 10'ers are narrow.  I don't know why that is.  Why isn't someone making some kind of all-arounder in that size?  You know, 10x30, not 10x28 and not 10x34.  Seems like an opportunity for someone ...

I really don't like going custom because resale is zilch.  I'd just as soon wait on a production board to come out.  Gotta be one soon, right?

Linter,

You can't go by thickness numbers. My 9'5 Mana is thick, but it acts thin. The rails are underwater. So even though my board is thick and wide compared to my previous board, it sure feels thin, stable, and very surfable.

I sure hope you get a chance to demo because its getting harder to judge boards by dimensions as SUPs get more refined.

linter

Good point, DW.

I wonder what the refinements are that're making this possible.  Do you know?

What about 10'2?  I paddled the RRD Diamond 10'2 yesterday and I really liked it.  10'2 x 29 1/4.  Super stable for me at 200 lbs.

My wild ass guess.......
This new generation of wide boards allow the rails to be thinned out without creating radical feeling dome under your feet. My first true longboard SUP was the 10'6 Kyle Bernhardt back 2 seasons ago. At about 28 wide (or less) the deck was so heavily domed it hurt my ankles. But the board worked well. I just was too uncomfortable with such a steep dome in the deck.

Wide also eliminates the need for step rails.

Great topic.  I've been thinking about the exact same thing.  I have a 9'3" Subvector but I truly miss the noseriding aspect of SUP.  I previously had a Naish 10'6" (until it was stolen) that surfed like a well shaped longboard.  I miss that board when the waves are small.  It definitely had some magic to it.  It wasn't the most stable board for paddling though at 28" wide.

The Takayamas are also fairly narrow for their length, and the word on them is that they surf really well too.

I believe that going wider will cause the board's surfing ability to suffer.  I am thinking about getting a Richardson custom board for my next board, but am torn between getting a noserider or a smaller thinner version of the subvector.

If I get a 10' I am thinking about keeping it no more than 28" wide.

I got the answer!
Fanatic Fly 10Ft X 30"  :o 2+1 setup comes in HRS (std Epoxy construction or in a WOOD construction. All around noserider. Well designed and impecably made. I would send a link to their site and a youtube of them in use but I can't figure out how in this forum's format :-[

Pop me an email and I'll send it all to you

Sorry for my computer incompetence but I'm SURE THIS IS THE BOARD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

i had the takayama alii 10-03 - its a lovely board but i really felt that
for classic longboarding i would stick with my stylemaster
and the sub-v gave me what i want in sup

each to his own tho

I'm not sure if they still produce it, but the original Bonga Perkins Southpoint 10' x 27 is probably as close as you can get to a performance longboard feel from a standup board.  That thing rips.

linter

Yeah, that's what I want, a classic longboard in a SUP (not a performance longboard; that's not where I'm headed  :'( , skillwise).

A bit ago, I read about the noseriders shaped by a Californian named Maxx Dexter; to wit: http://www.thesurfingblog.com/maxx-dexter-surfboard-the-perfect-longboard-for-noseriding.

Curiosity raised, I emailed him, asking him if he'd ever made a similar board but as a SUP.  His response: "I have zero experience in shaping SUPs. But Im pretty sure that finding a noseriding SUP is near impossible. I just wouldn't know how it is possible to transfer the specs over to a SUP. They are just not meant to noseride really. They are too thick too wide and they just don't work the same as a normal surfboard. I've ridden a couple SUPs before and they just sideslip or fade out of the wave. Some SUP shapers may differ and say that they do noseride and call me crazy or they are just trying to sell their stuff, who knows. I wish I had an answer but I don't."

Well, I tend to think he might have a point.  As my noseriding video thread suggests, there are lots of riders who can noseride pretty damn well, but that may have everything to do with the rider and much less to do with the board.  Maybe they're noseriding great despite the board, not because of the board.  Me, being the rider I am, I need the better board to make up for my many cross-stepping and noseriding deficits.

Any shapers care to weigh in?

I would definitely think that Donald Takayama could shape a noseriding SUP.
