The Maui Canoe and Kayak Club season opener (Sorrento's Race) was today. Short race--six miles, but it was against the wind, and the last mile was tougher than the previous five. Larry won going away, though he almost lost it at the end when another paddler came up behind him while he was loafing. I did poorly, fifth overall and second in my class (Men's Unlimited), but also last in my class.

Not a big turnout of SUP paddlers, I think the flatwater bit turned a lot of people off, though the canoe and kayak folks were there in force. I thoroughly enjoyed the race, though it was a grind. It feels good just finishing those hard paddles going as fast as you can.

Boy it was a kinda tough paddle..  Really lousy start and really lousy rest of race. I got seasick halfway through which was not much fun.. Those big ole F16s really arent very good in upwind condtions.

Thanks Randy, wish you could have been there.  We missed Jeremy too.

Tracy, sorry to hear about your bad start and the woozyness in the middle.  Next week should be a better race.

There were over 100 canoes today, and we all started together.  The start was pretty exciting.  The race was actually fun for me, but I'm a glutton for punishment.  I'd draft canoes as best I could when they would pass by.  It helped a bit.

The footie 14 behaved very well in the ankle high chop.  The wind was VERY light in our faces, maybe 5 mph at the most.

The shorebreak at the finish was fun to watch.

I was pretty tired towards the end, covered with dried sweat.  Just before the finish line, I fell in.  I looked behind and saw a standup bearing down on me, maybe 20 yards behind.  Uh oh.  So I jumped up and sprinted for my life.  That's the last pic.  Good fun.

Stole a few pics from Diane.

Mass starts are always a gas.

Me taking gas at the finish.  Neat outline on the footie eh?

Congratulations Larry! I wanted to do that race but the surf was pumping with light off shore winds. I couldn't resist. Hope to see you at the next race.
