I would like to move up from the adjustable paddle that came with my Naish. The aluminum shaft paddle has been good for learning to paddle the mangroves but does not cut it for surfing. I am not at a point I need a $300 carbon fiber paddle but can only find fiberglass ones in the $250 range. Any suggestions besides getting off the dime?

Pop for  the carbon small bladed paddle. Unless you are a huge guy the smaller blade is like paddling thru butter in the surf. Doesn't pull you off balance on a shorter board. I broke my Methane at the end of the summer and used a fiberglass with a slightly wider blade for 2 months and I really noticed the difference. I got used to the fiberglass but when I got my Meth back it was so much more responsive and quick. The fiberglass was a little easier on the shoulders maybe but I still vote carbon.

I really like my Werner Carve for surf... fiberglass, narrow blade and was pretty reasonable.. $215 if i remember. They also have a wider blade.. forgot what that one is called. I have the Quickblade Elite for downwinders

I broke down and ordered a Kialoa Methane for Christmas. Too many good reviews. Hard to believe I'm paying more than my first three surfboards combined, but that was over four decades ago. Look forward to getting it wet soon.

Aloha - I say make your own! It only takes an afternoon. Lots of info on the net or do as i did and go to www.diysurfgear.com and download the plans. You can build a really nice paddle for less than $20. My .02
