It's funny, but where I live SUPing is on a different trajectory. People don't use the Hudson that much for recreation, and a lot of that has to do with the pollution. That's mostly gone, but the reputation remains. There's a lot of room for growth here.

Surf4food, there's definitely surfing at Rockaway. One of Creek's videos the one of the Red Paddle Girls is there. That's far for me, like two hours though. There's no surf on the Hudson, but plenty of flatwater.Actually, I'm trying to figure out a place to surf on the river. There are some good coves with shallow beaches. If the wind is just right and maybe 20 mph, there's surf. I just haven't got the timing right yet.
