S-16 - The stand-up surfski (video)
« on: October 11, 2017, 08:27:59 AM »
I recently got my new custom  SIC Standamaran (S-16). I was eager to test it on a downwind run.
This past weekend opportunity presented it self, some good mix conditions and confused water, perfect!

Riding this board downwind is counter-intuitive, it rides like a surfski than a sup, there is no surfing this board
but it is fast, creepy fast...

our forum friend off-shore organized this run. He is making a guest appearance in the vid.

I'll have some tech specs and detailed pics of the board soon.

Thanks for sharing Burchas. It was awesome run (see separate post on the Downwind and Racing Section on the H2O run) to get a ride on your new machine!

I concur with Burchas in that this rides like a surfski, and has an unusual soft rolling bumpy feel as you head through the waves, i guess as you pass over the bumps. But really stable, and great fun... I want one!!

What is it best for?

It doesn't look like DW is its thing.

Yugi, Take a look at the vid I just posted on the Downwind and Racing Section (subject "Introducing the H2O downwind run...") and you will see how good and surfski like it is downwinding. I got some good shots of Burchas just gliding away on it. I also jumped on board it with my headcam on and you can see how those two piercing pontoons just pierce through the waves in front like a surfski. It's a very different way of riding compared to a SUP, but once you get used to it, it just glides and glides...

I wanted one of these a couple of years back but since multihull were outlawed for racing, I didn't pursue it. A shame as twin hulls could be really fast on flatwater.

I have this vision of myself trying to step back right into the gap between the cross beams.

Guessing it's awesome in upwind chop.

Thought I read somewhere that multihulls need width between the hulls else the wave off one hull slows the other, or maybe that's more on sailboats?

A nice video to watch. Never have seen a machine like that before. BTW, great background music for your video.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Night Wing!

dingfix, I think this applies here as well, this boat is fassst but I'd bet it would take-off without
wave interference.

ukgm, you're right, in flat water this machine is a killer! even-though I run it with a paddle 2 inches
shorter than needed ( it's very high on the water) I still get significant time difference than my Blackfish.
The rougher the conditions the more significant is the gap.

yugi, this is an unwind dream machine. The day I got it, there was a consistent 17knots winds
with brutal gusts. Normally I wouldn't go out of the protected water as it is just no fun. having tested this boat
in Maui in 22knots consistent headwind and crazy chop, I took it out without thinking twice about it. Did a 2 mile
upwind and than a quick downwind.

In mild downwind conditions, this boat will blow every board I know out of the water. It gets trickier when conditions
are steep, you really do have to ride it like a surfski or oc1, going around the bigger bumps with lots of angling.

The creator of the boat promote it more toward an M2O conditions but I have seen him scorching it on a very
lively Maliko run.

You are very right. I had the same feeling when just started to play with the steering when
angling around waves, especially since I sit very high on the water. As you could clearly
see in vid I ended up almost dead sideways on the face of the wave.

This boat has such an amazing secondary stability I never fell once due to broaching.
The only time I managed to get my self in the water was due to inadvertent steering engagement
on acceleration  where the board reacted so fast my body didn't have time to respond and I went flying.

We'll see what happens in bigger conditions. The board is still a work in progress though, I'm modifying the
tiller to test different trim and I'm replacing the SIC dagger rudders with custom Larry Allison rudders, for
weedless action and better reaction.

Looks like a very cool water craft to me. I saw a standamaran two years ago in a race. Fast and stable. And as you have pointed out seems immune to head and cross winds!
