I never should have sold my 2014 Glide. Nice board,  but I thought it was too heavy.

For sure, DJ makes a good case for that board. The lateral stability looks fantastic (but that maybe just DJ's skills of course!). That board is also very pretty, and I see that the GTW version is 31lbs, which doesn't seem so bad for such a big board, if it's tough. It's very nice sometimes to jump on a really stable board for DW. I have a couple of 14x30 DW boards and use them for light relief, friends, or crazy hell conditions. There's no doubt that it is harder to get these wide heavy boards into bumps, but equally it's easier to keep an even keel so that can aid planing, and you are less likely to miss a bump, and it's easier to dig deep with your paddle stroke. Which all means that for the average Joe the difference in average speed can be far less than you'd think. When DJ gets his new Maliko it will be interesting to see how much faster (if at all) he is on it.

I like that music in DJ's vid, too.

I would need to see pictures from other angles, but on the face of it, that looks like a really great shape, and very adaptable. It looks more flat water oriented than before, maybe. It almost looks like they've blended the 2017 Maliko and Javelin together? Which might not be a bad thing for a race board. Hard to see how this might be more DW-oriented than the 2017 Maliko though? But as I say, hard to tell from those pics, when we can't see the rocker etc.

My immediate thought though was "nice shape, this could be the All Star killer...".

The rails don't look very friendly or forgiving unless your way way way back on the tail

You are talking about the picture of the "new" Maliko?
For my own information/learning, is that because the rails are round almost all the way to the tail?

Yeah much tippier-looking, but it looks like there might be a substantial concave which might help? It's probably gonna be less friendly in cross-chop and winds though. But then the All Star isn't too special in those conditions either, and that's the mark everyone seems to want to hit.

The supposed 2018 Maliko looks less DW and more AW so def less appealing for us.  Our preference is more for the original shape in 24 to complement our AS23.  But to be more AW and faster in the flats can see the logic when racing only one board.  The market for the Jav must be puny for Naish to drop that board if indeed they do.

For real ocean DW we have no desire to go any narrower than 28.  Stability is king as that width planes easy enough when breeze jacks up to 25+ kts.  For 15+ kts 27.25 is plenty narrow enough.  Narrow is good on flat but not so good for DW.  But to each his own.

Eagle - you could go narrower downwind, I'm sure, if you moved to a lower volume board. Many specialist production DW boards have you standing so far above the water, with big fat rails that catch every piece of crosschop and wind. If you are standing closer to the water with a slim side-on profile, it feels a lot more stable.

But yes, in general, I'm watching DJ's video and thinking "hmm...good idea - why make it any harder than it has to be?". And if the 2018 Maliko is going to be a soft-railed semi-Javelin, then maybe we'll be seeing a lot more of DJ on the 14x29 Glide.

Did anyone see the results of the recent M2M and see how well these new 2018 14' Maliko proto's went.. Pretty amazing.

"We want to extend a huge congratulations to Bernd Roediger, who won the 14' division and placed 4th overall, and Ethan Koopmans who placed 4th in the 14' division inthis years Maui2Molokai. Not a bad weekend for the Naish Maliko board to win both the men and womens 14' divisions! "

"Wishing a very happy birthday to Annie Starr Reickert, who also dominated the the women's 14' division and won the Maui2Molokai this past weekend! "

:) :) :) :) :)

That's a perfect riposte to the wild speculations from me and others here about the 2018 Maliko, DJ. Bravo. That made me laugh.

Ok, so in the right hands, the new Maliko can downwind pretty well, then.... :)

I like the like what I've seen so far, for sure. It's the sort of board I'd be interested in right now - although I'd need one a fair bit wider than the one in the pics you posted.

One thought: were the prototypes paddled in that race the same as the production boards are going to be, or were they one-off specials?

Thanks for the video DJ, tunes with glide.
For us downwind wanabes this is some nice board porn - Luc and other photos included.
And the board seems to be the sort of open ocean friend I'd like to add to the quiver.

In the case of Ethan Koopmans and Anne Reickert at least, they paddled the regular 2017
models. I haven't seen pictures of Bernd from the race but I'll ask him today when I see
him, he's here in Hood River now.

"Eagle - you could go narrower downwind, I'm sure, if you moved to a lower volume board."

Yeah going to a lower volume board makes perfect sense to me  ie. M24.  But at this point see no reason to go to a narrower board for pure DW runs.  The M14 and Bullet V2 provide all the challenge and planing fun already.

Was thinking for upwind DW runs the lower volume M24 could get added for a fun perspective.  The only problem is no one round here has one.  So looks hard to source.  The shape of the 2017 or 2016 underbody looks perfect in a 24 for this.

Of course if none can be had then will of course persevere with the AS23.  But can say that in doing so -> my balance has improved drastically at the expense of pure fun quotient.  In fairly docile conditions I come back sweating and legs tired.  But dry at least.  So the 23 has done everything expected.  Excellent board for that.  Torture in cross chop and slop -> but perfect in a sadistic way.

For racing against the AS23 the 2018 Maliko makes sense to increase speed a bit at the expense of stability.  Always a compromise.  Keen eye burchas.   ;)
