Latest Build ... Behold the mighty Bean Bag!
« on: June 30, 2017, 12:30:06 PM »
Behold the mighty Bean Bag!

Features:

- Balanced "double ender" outline, wide point at center.
- Single concave to vee double through the fins and vee off the tail.
- Flat deck with a slopey, pinched "performance" rail.
- "Speed Box" rocker with a little extra flip at the ends.
- Five fin set up for maximum versatility.

My goal for this project is to create a board with characteristics of my Hypto Krypto in a slightly smaller package.  Starting with my Hypto Krypto I rounded off nose and tail to trim the outline shape down to its essential foundation. To make the board "snappier" I moved the wide point back, thinned the nose foil, and added a little kick to the tail rocker.  To increase performance I deepened the single concave a touch and refined the rail profile.

Dude, if this continues you will be just standing in the lineup on a foam cooler lid with a paddle.

Ok, joking aside, that looks super fun actually. I'm not sure if it's the shape or what but it seems more user friendly which may just be a trick of the eye but I look forward to hearing how these compare in the 6' to 7'6" range that you're spanning now.

We need to have a zoner meetup so we can try these things. I'd love to see how they feel in the water.

Your shaping and design skills are top notch man.

The way I've seen you surf, I can't imagine being any snappier!  All these boards are your personal shapes, then you have someone glass it for you?  That's something I want to get into when I retire in a few years.

Thanks.  I think this shape would work well at any length, it is so perfectly balanced.  Size it up for some fun cross stepping and trimming or go real short for a stubby wave catcher that can turn on a dime.  I am most excited about the rocker.  I am hoping the extra little kick in the tail will allow me to get a bit more vertical without losing too much drive.

Thank you.  Trying to make a better board is a fun part of this hobby for me.  If I can improve on the Hypto I will be stoked.  I am hoping the rocker adjustments I made will give it the X factor I am looking for.

I design using Shape3D then have Marko Foam CNC the blank for me.  I use Pure Glass or Bashams for glassing.  I haven't decided on a glassing schedule for this board yet but I will probably have Pure Glass do this one with a 6+6 on top and 4+4 on the bottom.

Board is sanded, sealed and I have started painting.

Final sanded dimensions are 6'-1" x 27" x 76L.  Blank weight after sanding is 4lbs 4oz.  I am very happy with how the board came out, especially the rails, bottom contours and rocker.

I used Z-Seal EPS Sealant to seal the blank.  I probably didn't go as heavy as I should have but since this is my first time using Z-Seal I was conservative with the application.  The sealed and sanded blank looks much nicer than a plain blank.   Total weight added using Z-Seal was 1oz.

Something else I am trying for the first time is painting the blank myself.  I am using Americana acrylics (Winter Blue, Sea Glass and White) mixed with a little water and applying with a sponge to get a streaky matte finish.  I wanted to try a couple of different colors to see how they turn out after glassing so I changed the color scheme up a bit.  Revised color scheme is shown below.

Paint is done and board is ready to glass.   Still need to figure out how I want it glassed.  Thinking 6+Innegra/6, 6+6/6, or 6+4+4 patch/4+4.  I want to try something a little different than what I have done in the past.  Any suggestions?

Dropped the board off at Pure Glass today for glassing.  Going with Carbon/Innegra + 6oz + 4oz on the top and 6oz on the bottom.  Let the wait begin...

I was trying to look closely at your carbon/Innegra pic.  So is that carbon/Innegra combo not as dense a weave as regular Innegra cloth?  Innegra cloth doesn't wet out as clear as regular glass and I was wondering about your nice color work, and if it would show through as clearly. Looks like that combo is a more porous (lack of descriptive word) weave. True? Great shape, too!

Cool!  Just saw this.  Man, that board looks so fun.  It's crazy to even mind stand on a board that short! Do you have any shots of you standing on one of your shorties on the water?  Any surf shots?

I believe you are correct.  When glassed I think all you'll really see are the vertical carbon strips and faint cross hatch of the Innegra.  The color work should still show through.

Here's a pic of me on the Hypto.  As you can see, it is quite stable.  I have some webcam footage of the Hypto and Lazy Boy in action, I just need to edit it and get it uploaded somewhere.

My wife has a similar construction and color on her longboard. The white weave is pretty subtle. Here's a shot when it was still wet.
