425 Pro race line of SUP
« on: June 22, 2017, 02:57:02 PM »
Georges Crondsteadt is with a new company and these boards look really thick just from some pictures but on the website it looks pretty solid what do people think of this shape ?

Looks fast. Looks tippy. Looks awkward to carry. But racers won't care about the last two characteristics as long as the first is true.

Paddled the non pintail version last weekend. Wasn't choppy enough to really test it properly but it was stable enough for a 24" board, certainly more stable than the whiplash. Talking with the guy who had it, it sounds like the Vapor, just gets better in rougher stuff. The standing area is dug out down to about water level, the rails are very thick, big ol boof nose. I preferred the 24" Maliko that I tried by far in those fair conditions but I'd like to have a go on the 425 in some good chop. A flat water board it is not.

I followed alongside him during a race a couple of weeks back.

I was wondering who was in the boat that helped him and took him on its wake.
Supracer was ranting about you. A better help would have been if you told him he took
the wrong line  :)

From their website that board looks like yet another Ace variation but with even more
volume. It looks like everyone else is on that bandwagon these days.

Obviously the boats following alongside the leaders create some wake that hits the back of the pack. No harm done, maybe just a bit of pain relief for the stragglers. We had swiss national TV on board filming with slightly more sophisticated gear than Chris’s iPhone. Supracer’s microphone handle, however, is by far the coolest.

The best would be catamarans to follow and film races.

Georges didn’t get any wake at any point. He took his own perfectly direct line to the finish. He hates drafters and likes to do his own race. The main pack took a strangely roundabout way. Zig zaging all over the place as leaders tried to shake the pack. Georges was far on the side all alone.

He looked well placed for a while but as Booth with Titou following accelerated he seemed to lose that. Booth and the pack did well coming in close to shore for the last miles to the finish because there is a favorable current along there. Georges missed out on that with his direct line. He was really happy to do it all alone however.

Looked like the 425 handled nicely.

On the 425 I didn't find it has a boof nose at all. The nose is more pointy than boozy. The tip rides above flat water. As you see from the side it isn't a high volume nose. It's reasonably lowish.

Looking from above it is also more pointy than boofy.

I'm not a huge fan of standing in a clog on water but in clog world this is a nice one.

I believe Georges' 425 was something like 24 wide. I remember noticing it was more allround. Titou also was on a 24 wide allround board. It was pretty hot heavy threatening weather. They were maybe prepared if a storm hit. Which it did just a few hours after the race. Around 1700 a Bornan storm came thundering down.

From
https://www.mirabaud.com/fileadmin/user_upload_group/publications/Mirmag/2016_Mirmag_Les_Vents_du_Leman_EN.pdf

"LAKE GENEVA THUNDERSTORMS
The Bornan
A blustery wind that sweeps down the Genevan slopes of
the Alps at more than 120 km/h. Its effects are mainly felt on
the Large Lake. This stormy wind springs up very suddenly on
extremely hot days"

(for info the definition of a hurricane/force 12 in terms of wind speed is > 118 kmh/64 kn/74 mph)

The Starboard brigade were all on 21 Sprints, which Boothy sure didn't have any problem flying on.

I paddled the ocean pro, he's on something else in that video, maybe the arrow. Looks like he's carrying the ocean pro or the pincode in the pic though.

Where one might catch this high quality footage online? Your iPhone footage didn't do it
to me either ;) (though ten times better than the livestream)

Was this race live on Swiss TV?

The 425 looks pretty low height up front with a deep dugout.  The low COG helps stability quite a bit and is def noticeable on the Ace and Sprint.  Works pretty good on the 21.5 Sprint and Sonni really liked her wider 23 she used to win.  The Sprint 21.5 is extremely low drag and very efficient.

The plus with the low budget iphone live feed is the gimbal when it works.  And def better than no feed when the feed was working right.

The bumps from the boat wash were talked about ie. ranted about - pretty much throughout the whole race.  Georges likes it away from the fray with no one drafting.  As well Boothy.  Boothy noted he is racing to win -> not to come in top 5.
