I find it interesting that so many people on the internet are celebrating the death of this hunter, but nobody really seems to be mourning the death of the cow elephant.  Did she leave behind a calf? Was she pregnant?  None of the articles that I have read have any answers to those questions.

I find it strange that this hunting party unwittingly stumbled into a herd of cow elephants.  How does that happen?  The guy that died was not even hunting elephants that day.

I think the main thing that this story exposes is that probably 90% of people have no concept of how wildlife management works.  Sometimes, in certain areas, some animal species get overpopulated.  A number of them have to be culled.  So why is it bad that some rich American spends $20,000 to get a trophy?  It would have been killed anyway, right?  At least someone gets to decide exactly which animal gets killed.  IDK, I don't know enough about the issues in Africa to have an educated opinion but I am sorry that the guy died and I feel bad for his family.

It is what it is.  I think it goes back to the idea that it's nice to see those occasions when the animal gets the human who is trying to get the animal.

What's funny to me is how we will all be horrified if a surfer gets attacked by a shark but we will give an attaboy to the shark that kills the shark hunter.  I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of this.

Animal culling to control population is being justified.
Human over population is a conundrum.

Humans are, surprisingly, taking care of that themselves. If economic conditions in the developing countries continue to improve it's likely that we will have stable or perhaps even negative population growth within twenty years--maybe sooner. Kids are an expensive luxury unless you have a need for them as cheap labor in subsistence conditions. Given current birthrates worldwide the only thing slowing that trend is the aging population. We're not dying on schedule.

I might catch hell for this, but I wouldn't mind seeing some seal and sea lion population control, especially along the Ca. coast, they are getting totally out of hand, both in population as well as overtaking many harbors, marinas, and beaches.
They are all protected, and why, it's not because they are endangered, they are far from that, but it's because they are so cute.
Ever been up close to an elephant seal?  Ugly as hell, and they breed like bacteria, as do most all seals.
There are so many of them that it's time to start treating them like the American alligator.  It's easy for people to accept the population control of alligators because they are ugly and dangerous, but many seals are dangerous also.  It's time.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I'm with you Weasel, not sure about culling, but I think Sea World needs to stop helping them. Whenever there is a sick seal or sea lion, Sea World rescues it, feeds it, and releases it into the wild. This is totally upsetting the balance of nature. When there is little food (fish) available in nature, young die off and the mature quit breeding. This gives the food (fish) time to re-establish. Sea World will feed the seals and sea lions with imported sea food until they recover and then release them so they can decimate already diminished fish population. Of course, they make a big public display of how they are helping the marine environment.

A small group of seals and pups have been lounging at low tide at Sharks in Santa Cruz lately.

Yesterday, I saw a sea gull standing on something shiny, so I went to take a look, and it was a dead juvenile seal.  I didn't turn it over to inspect for shark bites.

I was going to make a bad joke about the gull being a "seal surfer", (slap to face).
