esskay... thanks for the heads up.... they really do look warm. As you know, they key in cold weather paddling is to insulate your feet from the cold they are imobilized in.... the Explorers do it with room for socks, yours look like they come with a ton of insulation... I'll have to check them out. ;D

NRS boundary shoe

Chota Mukluk light

Two more great (albeit pricy) options. Amazonia has 'em along with the NEO explorers!

Warm feet and hands the MOST factor in hard-core winter conditions

If YOU are out there doing it post up!

I gotta say the NeoSport Explorer boots are comfy and warm I wear 1pr of socks and have narrow feet (only thing slim on me) and run a true size 13 shoe and they work fine. But I'm NOT in the "Icebreaker Club" like Creek & Mr B and others here

They are available and qualify for the ZONER Discount if anyone wants a pair

I have the 5mm Xcel split toes, also the 7mm and 8mm round tie boots by xcel. Yes they are warmer...obviously because of the extra thickness but also being round toe...it makes a difference. If you really want warmth get the 8mm...toasty. I am surfing in all mine so I don't use anything else eg socks and stuff.

Old age, perhaps poor feet blood circulation = cold feet.
It was hopeless for me, UNTIL I FOUND: Booties from Quicksilver.
Surprisingly enough, the Cypher 5mm split toes work great, and without removing the "feel" of the board.
They even make it in 7.5mm, but seriously: I am for the first time plenty warm with the 5mm.

I own 4 other pairs of booties... some are better-made than others, but basically all of them fail miserably at keeping my toes from freezing (I am being literal).
At least, give the quicksilver stuff a try; you may be amazed.

I recommend Atan Hot Mistral Boots 6mm. They are OK to wear, allow your feet to spread naturally and are warm.

... and I hate booties

Just a quick update regarding the boots. I've ordered a pair of Typhoon Surfmaster 6.5mm zipped boots. Not too expensive at £24 so thought that i would try a different type of boot. As I mentioned in my first post, I'm interested in seeing how well the 6.5mm zipped boots keep my feet warm and the ease of getting them on and off in a cold car park!! If my plan doesn't work then a pair of 8mm Xcel infiniti boots look more than toasty enough-coldsup, if they work for you up in Scotland, then should be no worries for me in South Wales!
Thanks for all of your suggestions!

That's a horrible choice.

Anybody using these boots for winter surf?
http://neosportusa.com/dive/product/3mm-5mm-7mm-hi-top-zipper-boots/

I'd like to try something with a zipper for easier on/off and drying, and these are the only ones I've seen available in 5 and 7 mm that didn't look like neoprene work boots. Also, what do folks think about 5 mm vs 7 mm boots for surfing in below freezing temps (air and water)? I've only used 7 mm Hyperflex amp boots, which keep my feet quite toasty. But I feel considerably less stable and nimble on my feet in winter gear, and I wonder how much the loss of sensitivity and dexterity with a thick boot is contributing to that. Would 5 mm boots make much difference, without costing much warmth?

Thanks!

Creek and I (Creek turned me on to these) have been using those boots for YEARS. Plenty nimble i can't feel the difference between 5mm to 7mm To get  super toastie get a good pair of insulated socks add a little in the boot size to accomidate
These are perfect SUS boots I have to admit when I flatwater I use the Explorer boot but NOT in the ocean

If you want a pair we offer a serious ZONER discount just contact me

I started to wear these boots in February looking for relief from plantar fasciitis.

After nearly 100 sessions and 1,300 waves I discovered a few things:

  • My center of gravity was elevated.  This was disconcerting at first and made my paddle feel short
  • I eventually realized that having a hard heel actually contributed to heel side turns aka you can turn harder
  • My feet were noticeably warmer.  The water here is a constant 55 to 60 degrees and my feet used to get numb after a session.  They no longer get numb AND these boots are better for walking to and from the break
  • They are easier to put on, they dry better and therefore don't smell and they are relatively affordable
