Yakima Bedrock racks

Anyone have experience with this product (bars that span the bed of a truck on top of the truck bed)?
I'm doing the research for a (distant) future vehicle purchase and this looked like a really user friendly option for a truck without a shell.  Low loading height, all the bed space for storage, paddles, dog crate etc... SUP boards could be stored below cab height, unless I end up schlepping more than 4.  Pictures help if you have any.

I haven't seen the Yakima version but I saw these homemade ones about 7 or 8 years ago

They definitely keep the bed open and we're easy to load

I'm guessing you're looking at something similar to the truck bed racks in the link below.

I think it is a good idea. You'll just have to check with your state concerning how far a sup board can extend out from beyond your tail gate with (I'm guessing) a red flag attached to the end of your sup(s) during daytime travel.

If traveling during the dark night hours, a constant burning (lit) red light might have to be attached to the end of the sup along with a red flag attached.

Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters

If I do end up getting a truck, the debate is between an inexpensive Yakima Bedrock, and the much more expensive but potentially much more useful Thule Xsporter Pro, which can raise up to above cab height for really long loads.  If the bed of the truck is roughly 6 feet long and our boards are between 8-10 and 9-6, We'd be hanging out there a ways, but still well above bumper height of the cars behind us. You're right Nightwing, about the flagging and the light but I suspect I'd blow off that requirement, knowing that the highway patrol has bigger fish to fry in most instances than a secure load that hangs off a foot or two more than it should.

pguidry, that rack is pretty awesome.  Looks like a pono build, except for the bungees vs marine rope that I suspect Bill would be using.

Aloha Jim,
Pono Bill picked up a board at my shop last year in a shiny new rig with store bought Thule racks...but, you got the rope part right...;-)
