I've always bagged my boards when carrying them on a roof rack - always wondered if people who don't used board bags have had dings/stone chips on their boards?
My board bags are slightly longer and wider than needed but makes it so much easier to use.

Just stopped by Sup Position today and bought a topless board cover from Ralph.  It was all because of this thread too; didn't know anything like this existed and it's perfect for keeping the sun off of my AW as it sits in my patio area.  Love it, thanks Ralph, and nice to meet you today.  I'll be back for more stuff soon.

I'm tough on gear and I never use a bag, to much of a pita for me. I've seen some sun damage because of it (maybe) but the truth is my boards spend far more time in the sun when I'm on them than off. Some yellowing, some wood oxidation ( as much as I like the look I'll avoid wood again for this reason). In 7 years I've never gotten a ding a bag would have prevented that I know of. The topless covers do sound like a good compromise.

I've got topless covers for all my boards. Left full carbon boards on the beach and on top of car all day and it definitely keeps them cooler. They also travel on roof racks better than full bags I think. With the full board bags, the flapping can get quite strong to where it sounds like it's damaging the roof of the car. The topless board bags not so much.
