First Board
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:43:11 AM »
Hey PaddleBoarder's, Im new to the sport. I'm a long time surfer/30+yrs. I live in florida/West coast flat most of the time only small waves during storms. Im looking at the Naish 2014 Nalu GT Paddleboard. It will be my first SUP. Mainly for flat and exercise or during small mushy surf. I drive to Cocoa Beach to surf, but I bring my longboards with me. Any recommendations would be great.

Thanks,
Pray for Waves!

Do it. The nalu will cover your bases & if you do progress in the surf the nalu will be up for it.

I have the same board. It's a great all arounder.  I've found running an 8" fin loosens it up a bit for surf. Mine is 6 yrs old and has been used a lot.  It's still in great shape.

What is your weight and height?

I would be concerned that you will outgrow 231L very quickly, especially if you are not heavy and like to surf.

Also, $2K is a lot to spend on a first board.

If possible I'd demo some boards to dial in what length, width and volume will work best for you.

Home Break: Doheny
Tic Tac v3 (Hoglet): 6' 6" x 23" x 3.6" x 67L
Omni: 6' 9" x 23" x 3.75" x 68L
Tic Tac (OG): 7' 0" x 22.75" x 3.5" x 70L
In The Pink (Incoming): 8' 0" x 22.9" x 3.25" x 70L

Blackproject Surge S77 (Soft Flex Shaft, T-Grip, +0" OH)

My first board was the Starboard Blend 11'2" x 30" x 174L .

It is plenty stable. Surfs nice. I've also done flatwater distance with it. Great all around board. I still use it.

I'm 6'7 and 240#'s so I can surf bigger boards and still throw them around a little. I typically surf a 9' board. When it's small and mushy I have more fun on the Nalu. I've surfed double OH on an outer reef with it as well.  Really it's our families favorite goto board for a day at the beach or lake. I have a number of boards ranging for surf to 18' race, and the Nalu seems to be the favorite with my family and friends.

That being said,  If it's just for you, I would consider the 11'4 Nalu. It's a little thinner,  narrowed,  and will surf more like a performance long board.

I was looking at the 11-4 and for some reason the 11-6 is $400 cheaper. I can get it for $1618, So not sure if a couple of inches is worth $400.

I also have a 10'6 Riviera all arounder.  I can tell you all the things I don't like about it. It's to flat to surf without knowing how to long board.  It has blisters on the bottom.  Rails are pinched all the way to the nose, so it grabs and paddles like crap. It's too wide and the deck pad doesn't feel good under your feet.

Based on your weight recommended volume would be 182L so the 11'6" is plenty of board @ 231L.

With your surfing background I do think you will outgrow this board very quickly if your primary use will be for surfing.  For flat water, exercise and good all round fun for the family it would be a good choice.

My friend has two 11'6 Nalu's that are about 3 years old. He surfs them at least once if not twice a week. Even in OH surf, he's never had a problem with either of them. I've surfed one of his as well and it looked good as new when I was on. I have seen one really beat up Nalu that a guy bought from a rental place. The bottom was all pressure dinged. I was a little surprised to see that. Mine Nalu is way older than his, has been slammed on multiple shore breaks, dragged all over the beach by my kids and friends, and looks good as new. I only repaired a nose ding about 4 years ago. I don't even have a board bag for it. I think the guy in this article either fell on the board, or put his weight into it when he was punching through the wash, and broke it. It was an operator error.  You break it, it's your's....
