Fin drag and leash drag

I switched to a full coil for surfing and noticed  the lack of leash drag. It is significant.  When I had my board built originally I had long board boxes put is so i could   switch around side fins ,  No I have found some side fins  I really like   but had t modify Futures glass in boxes to fit in my long board boxes and while it is pretty clean The lip around the  top of the box isn't precisely flush. Should  i pull  my long board box  and replace them with with future  boxes. will I lessen the drag?
I ride the board as a quad and am using 4 of the elevron  fins.  It works well  but I pushing for more?  many of you will think I am crazy asking this  You are right just ask my wife!

To me, and this is one man's opinion, this is like an average golfer switching to golf balls that are made using nano-tech-titanium-core-with-gel-packed-flight-increasing-uber-dimples hoping that the ball will somehow improve their game to the point of going from average to the PGA tour.

If you are surfing at the absolute top of your game, and the fins are keeping you from being able to pull and land a triple lindy, I say for sure, change out the boxes.

But...if this is not the case (and no offense meant here, but I doubt this is the case), I would not perform surgery on your board simply to have a fin box that will "maybe" produce less drag.

That being said...I would ask your wife though.   ;)

I know what it means, but ...

Get rid of the elevon fins if you are worried about drag.

I tried them, too much drag.  Can't imagine using 4.

Coil leash is more trouble than the drag.  For surf, I can't imagine the drag reduction being significant enough to matter.

The thing is on the leash it was noticeable  how much less drag there was. It was a lot not sure why  a lot of people dont like the coil  I love it, and as far as the fins go  I really like the  way the board climbs  with them.    but maybe  I will switch to standard fins and see if there is a difference.

The reason more people don't surf with a coil leash is that when it stretches out it has a tendency to "BOING!" back at you at really high speed. It only takes once.

I surf with a coiled leash all the time and never had it 'boing' back at me.

I have had the odd straight leash 'boing' the board back at me though..  :)

+1 on the no coil for surfing. I can't tell you how many times I stomp on the tail and my foot ends up half on a clump of coiled leash. One time I got pounded during a winter swell. My coiled leash wrapped around my paddle shaft, and the paddle twisted around the coiled leash into a knot. Not good in 50 deg. water on an out reef. Try untangling that mess in the impact zone of an 5+ wave, well over head set.  'NEVER' will surf with a coiled leash again. The only time I notice any drag on my straight leash is when a big clump of kelp is wrapped around it.
It's not overhead to me!

I second the no coil leash in surf. You want that board away from you when you're ducking bombs and you don't want it under foot when riding a wave.

I also use a regular leash on my cruiser and just pull up the slack and tuck it in my shorts when i think it's slowing me down.

When (not if)  the coil leash breaks, it can hurt you really badly.
