I'm what would probably be considered a beginner/ maybe intermediate SUP surfer. I'm taking a trip to The Cook Islands, Fiji, and New Zealand in February. Anyone have any suggestions regarding SUP surf spots and/or good flat water paddling locations?
Thanks

Hi

Just saw your post and thought I could help.  I live in Auckland, New Zealand and I do a lot of paddling around a place called Takapuna.  It is a suburb 10 minutes north of central Auckland so it is easy to get to with public transport if you don't have a car.  There are a couple of operators hiring out SUP's down on the beach.  A shop called Stand up Takapuna would be a good one to look for.  Takapuna is excellent for flat water paddling.

If you are looking for surf, west Auckland beaches are very pretty in a rugged isolated sort of way.  Definitely worth a look but they can be dangerous even to experienced people so i would stick to beaches that are patrolled by lifeguards like Piha or Muriwai.

If you are more mobile and taking a board with you I would recommend heading to a place called the Coromandel Peninsula 2.5 hours from Auckland.  The beaches on the East cost on the peninsula are stunning and you will find a good mix of Surf and flat water.

If you are getting out and about and make it to the South Island of NZ The Abel Tasman park, Queen Charlotte Sound, Milford Sound would all blow your mind with the scenery.   I haven't paddled them yet but would love to.

My best advice is to google the places I have mentioned and look at the pictures and decide what is best for you.

ps
I am heading to Fiji in June this year so would love to know where you are going.

Hope you have a great trip.

Thanks for the response.  I'll be sure and let you know about Fiji and what I find regarding paddling or surfing.
Another question if you have a chance to respond it would be much appreciated.
I'm thinking of possibly buying a used sup surf board when I get to Auckland because of the prohibitive cost of a long term rental.  Any suggestions re: shops or classified ad sites whee I might get a good buy? We have classified site called Craigslist in the states but don't know about NZ.  I'm checking out the Takapuna SUP shop you mentioned also, my son actually lives in Takapuna within walking distance.
Let me know if you want to connect and go for a paddle  sometime. I'll be there between Feb 8 and March 3rd.
Thanks again. . .

Easy Rider

Just got back from a week in Tavarua.
Sup'ed the entire time.
Surfed all the breaks around Tavi and Namotu. And paddled the channel a few times between the islands when it was calm.
Have been there the last 3 years in a row with a sup and it is growing for sure.
Easy Rider is the name of my store in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
My name is Warren Currie . . . and we SUP Surf indoors . . . in a shopping mall!
