December 20, What a magnificent day!

Fantastic skies are the reward that often comes with the passing of an active weather front. A nor'easter was just winding down... the rain was just ending. Low 30's early, with a high of 43 expected.

The storm clouds still darkened parts of the sky, brilliant blue was the backdrop to the white outer edges of the lingering front.

The craggy bluffs that would provide me with calm waters, are dotted with very interesting dwellings along it's coast.... Funky beach shacks on pilings, old Cape Cod summer homes, elegant hill top estates, windmill homes and fishermen's shanty's... all sharing the same views and waterfront bliss.

A great day for pictures and a bit of trespassing as well

Please post your winter paddle experiences... don't make me the only poster here. Share the stoke... tell everyone out there how much fun it is to cold weather paddle.

Gotta get some sleep... surf road trip at 4 am, good waves for the first day of the next long count. See you in the next era.

Keep posting yours for sure. Summer of 42....been awhile since I thought about that. What a great story that is.  Everyhting is frozen solid where I am and need to go through the cards from this summer and put something together. I think I need to get a winter picture of where I paddle to show the contrast tho. Most of the places we park in the summer need a sled or xc ski to get to now tho.

Beautiful shots! Thanks for keeping everyone stoked on this aspect of sup.

Here's my local paddling spot, Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. Rare to have it this calm.

That looks like a great Harbor to paddle.
The Seashepard looks mean! Thanks for that shot!

Welcome to the Zone

Closest I've been to you is Wanganui & Gisborn... good surf, great people in an absolutely beautiful spot! I drove 8 hrs through the forest on a dirt road from Mahia to Lake Taupo, past countless waterfalls, lakes and interesting places... probably my favorite travel experience ever ;D

Looking on google earth, it looks like waves would just funnel into Cook Straight, and from the looks of the headlands, coves and points around you.... there must be an endless SUP surf potential as well as great paddle spots. I'm sure Zoners would love to see some shots of those bays etc... everyone here loves a good travel idea, and your area must be awesome!

I pulled out my NZ album to get a shot from our Taupo trip...I just may do a post on it ;D

Classic back road pic!

I'm mainly a prone surfer so have spent a lot of time around Gizzy and Mahia - great waves.

The wind fair flies through Cook Strait so lots of wind swell and some downwinding, but good ground swell is a little inconsistent. There are some good reefs and points around, but very rocky and windblown. We're only just starting to explore the greater coastline for SUPs but lots of potential.

Most SUPrs stick to the city beaches, which have a large crew of prone surfers.

Do that post!
