Jim makes some good points about training volume.  I made the mistake myself to train too much/ too hard when I got into racing.  Overtraining is counter-productive.  Your body needs some time to adjust to the loads of paddling, you can increase the load safely over time as your body adjusts and gets stronger.  Don't overdo it when you are just starting out.  Another good point is to schedule your training to peak for a certain race/ event.   Make sure you give your body enough time to recover, take it easy the week before a big race.
