hollow board layup?
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:29:31 AM »
i was just wondering if anyone has any info on what layups are being used for hollow boards im assuming its a carbon/divinicel/carbon skin or similar but trying to find out a little more in detail as to what works

has anyone any info or seen inside a hollow board? ive got a pretty good idea but wouldn't mind some first hand knowledge. ive asked on swaylocks but  no real luck .

cheers charlie

Hi Charlie,

The hollow boards have all different types of core material. Coremat, divinycell, honeycomb, and fiberglass spars and stringers all seem to be popular. Every builder has his own preferences.

cheers david ive moved on quite a bit now with this since the post and i actual completed the bottom skin last night and tock it out the vac bag today. i opted for a carbon core cell glass layup and it has come out prity good for the first pull and pretty light  so quite happy, just got to work a few thing out with the stringer and possibly some deck reinforcement and it should be good.ny ideas who uses core mat i would nice and easy to use but i would have thought it wouldn't have been great for the weight due to using so much resin. the core cell is really tuff but not that easy to work with. im hoping to lay the deck up tomorrow and then have the board done by this time next week. i will post back once its all done. cheers charlie

i had a board from sandwich island composites in maui that was crushed on delivery and had a good chance to check out the lay up.
the deck/ standing area and botton were cabon/foam sandwich and everywhere else was cabon 2mil coremat. foam stringer as well.

ar wow thats great inside info many thanks i still cant see how core mat is a viable product as it just soaks so much resin maybe they are not quite so worried about weight for the dw boards (im building this one for sprints) it would be super east to work though.

can you give me any more info on the stringer ? size, type of foam glassed ect many thanks indeed

the two half of my board should come together tomorrow so i should be able to get a final weight. it has worked out a little heavier than hoped but it is the first one and i know were i can make savings. i am going to have a play around with some different materials to see if i can come up with a improved laminate

Holy shit!Nice work! What is the final weight and would you care to share what you ended up doing as far as layup goes??
Beautiful job, congratulations!

That is a real beauty!!!!!!
If you have any build pictures they are appreciated by everyone and if you have any bottom pics also.  Looks like it will just cut through the water!!
Let us know how it performs. I am also curious what you came up with for the layup. Getting ready for my next builds.
Thanks,
Richard

Sorry for not replying sooner I'm away snowboarding at the moment I Havant to many build pics  but I'll try post some when I'm back it came in at just under 10kg but I've got a few plans to get the weight down. I had some problems with the joint and over built the stringer so there's weight to be saved there. I think it was 180g carbon i used with a core foam sandwich layup and west systems epoxy

Thanks for the comments I'll be working on no.2 with a modified layup when I'm back

here is a look at the inside of a wood hollow board using luan, and glue. then stripped with bass wood, 2 layers of 6oz top and bottom plus a 6 oz deck patch.kinda heavy mostly for the bass wood.
