I was in NYC with the family doing an East Coast vacation, when I saw a fellow walking through the hotel with a C4 paddle. One of the great thing about this sport at this time is that it has not become the norm and there is a special affinity when one stand up paddler meets another in a strange place. It turns out the fellow is Paul Davis who is organizing
www.seapaddlenyc.com on August 13th. This was an event that I had no knowledge of previous to this meeting.
I love these types of events and consider this type the future of the sport from the non-surfing perspective. I am not going to be able to do it this year but I am going to sponsor Paul and put some links on a few of my websites to help this out.
I have also told Paul about this forum and hope that he will contribute information on the event and how the paddle went. I have been by boat around NYC and rowing in the Harlem - there are some serious currents and challenges on this course.
Best of Luck.
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
An extraordinary event will take place on Monday, August 13th in New
York City that I am helping organize. It’s the first ever surfers paddle
around Manhattan Island, organized by the Surfers’ Environmental
Alliance (SEA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit and benefiting several autism
advocacy and support groups, as well as SEA.
Participants in this endurance event will paddle 28 miles, beginning in
the South Street Seaport vicinity, and continue up the East River, into
the Harlem River then down the Hudson River, ending at Battery Park
City. About 30 invited participants, including legendary surfer’s
Darrick Doerner, ‘Mr. Pipeline’ Gerry Lopez, Joel Tudor and others will
navigate the waters, battling currents, tides and even the occasional
container ship. The entire event will kick off with a fundraising dinner
on Saturday, August 11th, at the Oceanfront Estate 35 Ocean Avenue,
Monmouth Beach in which members of the local autism community will
mingle with sponsors, donors, volunteers and, of course, the paddlers.
Please go online or ask me for an invitation.
www.seapaddlenyc.org And although SEA Paddle NYC will surely be quite an achievement, its
success largely depends upon you. So I’m asking you to lend your support
by making a contribution—no amount is too small. Enclosed is a list of
the organizations that will benefit from your generosity. Half of all
proceeds will go toward funding the three autism groups. The other half
will support Surfers’ Environmental Alliance.
Please complete the attached form and mail it back to me along with your
contribution. Your donation check should be made out to Surfers’
Environmental Alliance.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
Very Sincerely,
Paul A. Davis
