Starboard Wide Point 8’10” x 32”
« on: October 05, 2010, 03:30:50 PM »
Had a chance to ride this new model at the BOP.  My regular board is Starboard’s 9’8” Element, which I love.  The 8’10” feels just like surfing a short board.  No need to draw out lines with your back foot over the fins, it easily pivots where you want to go.  I was able to connect turn after turn, & keep going when the waves backed off to get the inside sections.  The waves were fun but rolling, so I was unable to determine if the board has good down the line speed.  The board is very stable, even when paddling over whitewater.  While it has no glide when paddling, it gets into waves easily.  It just takes a few hard strokes to push down the face.

I am very impressed, and think Starboard and Wardog (along with North Pacific’s designer) have a sure winner.  Wardog says the board sails well as a short board, & the production model will have footstrap inserts in the future.  For reference, I weigh 150.  Wardog has photos of the board on his blog.  Terry

Wardog ROCKS!!!

It's nice to know feedback gets to the industry and incorporations are made.

When are the production versions (with footstrap and mast inserts) due out?

Yes - Wardog does rock.

There will also be a big brother - 10'5" x 32" Widepoint with major input from Wardog.

The production versions should be here in December sometime.

I want to buy a board to start surfing more. I have tried surfing with my Big Easy couple of times and had no problems. Would this board a too large step down? I don't want to buy a board just for one season and change again, another option is the whopper but I have a feeling that quite soon I will look for a faster and quicker board. I weigh 180 lbs.

The Whopper would be the obvious step down from  the Big Easy
for surfing.

Get the hang of that one then look further as you progress.

Best of Luck!

Thank you for your advice. Let me check if I can buy/rent a whopper for a while.

viatormundi- I am in exactly the same position as you. I have a Big Easy and had a few days out with the Whopper. Sup-Position is right, lots to grow into! It's quite a significant change, especially when you're standing on it wondering where the hell the rest of the nose has gone! Feels really short, but maintains stability. I'm in Canada and where we surf we have to paddle the Whopper a little harder to have enough speed to catch rides, but once they catch you'll be surprised at its ability to carve on the waves. We're used to wind powered waves, so I noticed that sometimes the wind would catch under the rail making the board want to flip. I didn't have that happen on the Big Easy. I'm no expert, but it probably boils down to the significant difference in volume between the two boards.

That said, DROOLING over the 10.5 Widepoint too! Can't wait to see one in person! Good luck with your decision!

I wonder if anybody has tried the 10.5 widepoint. Is it on the market now? I am curios to know how different it is from Whopper.

We have a container due into California and heading to our shop very soon...we'll have them in the next week or so...and, they are just landing in Australia...

Here's what someone had to say on the SeaBreeze forum regarding the 8'10" WP...

"yes this is an amazing board.....only surfed in kinda 2 ft max at the moment and done some long distance flat water....but its bad ass....easy to find sweet spot....on par with the paddleability of my whopper, just as easy to catch waves....doesnt buck, but pops u back up friendly style... but then it spins on a dime and surfs like a champ......more than i expected and i'm stoked on it."

I think 8'10" is too small for my skill level and the waves we have here in Mediterranean. I look forward to hear some comments about the 10'5". I will make a choice between Whopper and 10'5" soon.

I wonder what the status of the proposed 9'5x32 is?  Sounds like a nice blend paddlability and shredability.  9' and under feels like a shortboard but is hard to paddle back out, 10' and over feels like i have to walk the board like a longboard.

Opinions on what boards out there are a nice compromise between paddlabilty and shredabilty?  Relativly easy to paddle back out and don't have to walk and trim a lot on teh way in....

A mid-9' Wide Point is prolly coming down the line for 2012...in the mean time as close as you're gonna get is a North Pacific custom quad plus1...which was the takeoff point for the Wide Point...

If you aren't gonna go with a NP custom 9'5" and didn't want to wait until next year for a production Starboard WP...you could look into the 9'8" Starboard Element...also, the 10' Coreban Icon and Jimmy Lewis 9'5" x 31" Striker might work for you...they have nice glide and stability...but, wider noses...

Hi aircube,
Yes...you can order through us...same price...and, you get my board and fin design expertise that will ensure that you get exactly what you want...I've learned how to translate a number of complex parameters into the finished product...

I have a new 8'6" design coming out of North Pacific factory pipeline...it's called the "Jammer"...here's a couple of teaser shots that don't give the full design away...just showing you the retro airbrush I came up with...executed perfectly by Art...more details on the design will happen soon enough...;-)

LOVE the colors!  Thats funny,  I was going through all your NP pics today and i was thinking, i don't mind the blue, i like the green and black, but somthing with all three, or blue added to the green/yellow/black would be the bomb.....

I'm sure you have mentioned this somewhere, but what is the pricing like on the NP's
