Idiots on the Willamette
« on: September 29, 2010, 11:38:40 AM »
Boater hurtles 48-foot yacht 50' onto the rocks (see photo).  Ironic, coming only a week after PonoBill said, "The Willamette River is kind of special for really idiotic boaters."  This was the same night I saw more SUPs at one time than ever before on the river (but a few miles north):

http://www.oregonlive.com/milwaukie/index.ssf/2010/09/willamette_river_boater_launches_48-foot_yacht_onto_the_rocks_1.html

http://www.columbian.com/news/2010/sep/28/vancouver-mans-yacht-stuck-on-willamette-river-roc/

No alcohol was involved (apparently the only thing on the rocks that night was the boat)--but I can't say that that reassures me.

Neither article mentions whether the boater was carrying a valid Invasive Species Card.

Oh the humanity.  Sounds like a good time to pile on.

Rick Bella, the reporter on the scene couldn't resist. "The yacht, named Transition, then hurtled at least 50 feet onto the river-worn rocks, leaving the boat high and dry."

I'll bet more than one person walked up to the skipper and said " I got some rope in my truck, you need a hand?"

Take it to the ding king, that will buff right out.

Here's a follow-up article showing the boat getting retrieved:

http://www.oregonlive.com/milwaukie/index.ssf/2010/10/tugs_two_barges_and_a_crane_salvage_yacht_stranded_on_willamette_river_shore.html

The article quotes the boat's owner:  "I am so embarrassed," said Keil, 78. "All I can say is dusk came up on me quickly. But I didn't even get a bruise or a stiff muscle. I am so blessed. "

The obvious question is why then was he going over 30 mph if he couldn't see? He's even more blessed that he hit the rocks instead of another boat or SUP.
