Secret Starboard.
« on: August 22, 2010, 03:12:25 AM »
There's been talk for a while now about a new 14' Starboard know as 'the secret board'.

My friend Jonathan has even ordered one sight unseen.

We often talk about what it might be like.. We'll know in about a week.. Meanwhile I just found these pics.

It's EJ's new proto 14.. It looks like a giant SurfRace.

Looks more like a 14 foot NEW but with a larger flatter standing surface like the SurfRace instead the footwells of the older 12'6" NEW. The standing surface is dug out deeply like the New and the tail is the tall pointy one like the New. It should be very fast for downwinders. Dan Gavere says the shape of the NEW is faster than the SurfRace for downwinders but is harder to balance on because of the narrower width. He thinks the taller, thicker (but narrower) tail of the New gets picked led easier than the SurfRace's tail

I'm looking forward to it. Maybe they'll have a 12'6" version as well.

From memory the New is 10" and this looks about the same.

Looking at the photos more closely, it looks like it does have deep foot wells like the NEW. This will help with stability but make it more tricky for surf stance on downwinders.

I wonder how wide the board will be.

EJ had what he called the "14 foot New" at Tahoe.

Yes that's the board in the above photos. The designer/shaper said it was being made for EJ for Tahoe.

There will be 2 widths of that board.

So that would be one size for people with freakishly good balance. And then the skinny one for EJ.

My Carbon 14' Surf Race will be here in two days, then thanks to DJ's photo journalistic skills all will be revealed!

Seems like Australia is always one of the first countries to receive the new models, I noticed in some of the recent photos the Surf Race 12'6 now has a centre handle, mine doesn't and it was one of the very first ones made. Lucky it's light and doesn't really need it :). All the new season windsurf boards have arrived in the same container.

I guess we may be the guinea pigs! Used to always happen with snow skis as well

More or less - yes.

There will also be two other 14' boards for next season.

Any word on prices? Hopefully lower than the very expensive prices for the NEW and Surf Race in 2010.

Looks like the NEW has be renamed Ace. Smart move.
