Anyone hear about a new Amundson 12' 6" flatwater board?
« on: August 01, 2010, 02:44:09 PM »
I was talking to Chip at Stand Up Flatwater in Bend Oregon yesterday and he mentioned that he is going to be receiving a new flatwater board from Amundson Aquaglide this week. He said it's 12' 6" with a flatter nose than the Naish Glide and early reports were that it was doing pretty well up in Hood River.

Curious to find out if anyone has heard of or paddled this board. I've been looking seriously at the Glide for flatwater paddling in Central Oregon with a side of windsurfing but this one has me curious...

Thanks,
Mike

I've seen a couple and tried one a few weeks ago in Hood River--swapped boards for about a third of a downwind run. Very nice. Stable, pretty fast, catches bumps well.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

We got our Amundson today and it looks cool. Doug Hopkins  and his wife have been doing very well with it in all conditions.
Boat bow and outline with wide  flat tail section for planing and stability. Catches small waves down wind.

Thanks for the info! I'm returning from a business trip and will have to see if Chip got one in. Sounds like an interesting board but I do like the versatility of the Glide since it can be windsurfed too...decisions, decisions.

Does anyone have a picture of one of these boards? I am curious to see what they look like.

I just saw it on the Big Winds web site but it's not on the Aquaglide site yet.

Just got one in. It looks pretty sweet. Boxy rails, square tail, nice gloss finish. 32 lbs. Hope to get it out soon, but it's windsurfing weather here right now. It does have a mast base insert, but I'll wait for lighter air. Give me a couple of days.

Is that a displacement or planing shape?

Looks like a bit of both???

I paddled it at Hood River (BigWinds has one in their demo fleet) last week in 15 - 20 MPH winds. I stayed in the lagoon and while I liked the way it paddled (very stable and it felt fast), I decided it wasn't for me. My problem was that it just didn't feel like a paddle board -- much more boat/canoe-like and I already have a kayak if I want a boat feel. Nothing wrong with the board (it's beautiful!) but just not the one for me.

I'd characterize it as more of a displacement hull than a planing hull, but I could be wrong.

The AST version is in stock here:

Great price for both AST and carbon versions. The carbon will be in stock at a later date according to the web site.

Wow that is an amazing price. I don't understand they still dont have the dimensions or pics of what the total design of the board looks like. TOP,bottom and sides.

Can mwilson or anyone else explain more on "it just didn't feel like a paddle board -- much more boat/canoe-like".  thanks, Ken

Sure...first of all let me say that I am a novice at paddle boarding. I certainly didn't mean to disparage the TR -- to the contrary, I liked paddling it a lot! If I were in to racing I'd probably be all over it because the performance to price ratio seems incredible.

I'm not looking to race, though, and wanted a board that looked/felt a little more like what I imagined a surfboard would look/feel like. I wanted a board with decent efficiency to use for workouts, paddling in our flat water river, and possibly on a down-winder or two on some of our local lakes.

Paddling the TR was a great experience because it helped me clarify what I wanted in a board. While I liked it very much, I decided that I didn't want a race board and chose to look for something else.

So, my comment about the TR appearing boat-like should not be interpreted as a knock on the TR. I meant that it has more displacement-oriented features (canoe nose to go through chop instead of over it, less rocker for longer water line, wider stern for better tracking) that are, I'm sure, very important in the overall speed of a board.

I think Amundson hit the mark with the TR for the 12' 6" stock class race board at a very competitive price. I think it's going to be very popular and the reports I've heard indicate that it's a pretty fast shape.

Hope this helps!

Mike
