Paddleboard Plans
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:30:44 PM »
Hello,
I'm interested in building a wooden stand up paddleboard and there seems to be a lot of information on this site but I can't seem to find any free plans out there. Is there such an animal or should I just buy some plans? I would like to use the SUP in everything from flat water to some small waves in the Gulf of Mexico. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The Tree to Sea forum is the source.  My plans are up there, along with many others.  Perhaps more importantly, some great build info with photos, disucussion, etc.

There's the CLC Kaholo.  It's mostly a distance board also available in plan and kit form.  I built one recently and modified it with a standard fin box for some riding options.

How's the performance of the Kaholo in ocean conditions?  Have you done any downwinders or races?  Great looking build, looks first class.  The fin box is a good idea...I always questioned the glass on twin fin set up on those.

Where I live on the Cen-Cal coast it's really consistently on shore this time of year.  But I may do an early AM short down coast run soon if the swell drops as expected.

First time in the water was Sat and I only did 2 mile checkout in 20 to 25 knot winds, the way back was a real grind but it would have been on any board.  I did a 4 mile work out Sunday and It's around 20% faster then my stock sized Starboard SUPer.  Not really fast fast but definitely touring fast like say a Bark Expedition fast.  This was on an estuary.  My initial impressions are less initial stability but more than adequate secondary stability compared to the all rounder style Starboard.  It takes a bit to get used to the roll but in reality it's really stable in side chop.

Andy, I have to say reading your board build and seeing the pics a few months back were really impressive and inspiring.  I wish I had the woodworking skill to make a board like yours.  In regards to the fin box I agree the twin skeg seemed pretty sketchy so I glassed a minimally dense redwood 2x4 mitered to receive the finbox onto the interior bottom and epoxied between bulkheads.  I think it's built pretty bomber.  The fin for the time being is a RFC 10" bamboo race weed as the kelp is really heavy this year.

Sorry for the thread jack.
